Nanning City, abbreviated as "Yong," was anciently known as Yongzhou and is also called the Green City. It is a prefecture-level city, the capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and a Type I metropolis, covering a total area of 22,100 square kilometers. Nanning was historically part of the Baiyue territory. In 214 BC, during the 33rd year of Emperor Qin Shi Huang's reign, the Qin Dynasty unified the Lingnan region, establishing Nanhai Commandery, Guilin Commandery, and Xiang Commandery. Present-day Nanning belonged to Guilin Commandery and Xiang Commandery (parts of the former Yongning County, central and southern Heng County, and Long'an County). In 942 AD, during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, Yongzhou was renamed Chengzhou to avoid a naming taboo, while still serving as the seat of Jianwu Military Governor. During the Southern Han Dynasty (947-950 AD), it reverted to its original name, Yongzhou. The Qingxiu Mountain Scenic Area in Nanning City began reconstruction in 1986 and officially opened in October 1987. The scenic area is planned into "four districts and one garden." Main attractions include the Millennium Cycad Garden, Orchid Garden, Cherry Blossom Garden, Rainforest Grand View, and the Anti-Japanese Student Army Monument.
