Exhibition in Shanghai | In Legendary Architecture, see Avenue Moriyama.
|In Legendary Architecture, see Avenue Moriyama. Rough, shocking, out of focus...
When seeing the work of the famous Japanese photographer Daido Moriyama for the first time, many people will feel doubtful and unadapted - is such a messy picture art?
In fact, in the 1960s, the reason why Daido Moriyama raised his camera was to peek into those seemingly inconspicuous corners and inadvertent moments of city life through his own "street shots", using some sense of "provocation" to turn this crude "real" image into a new language, a new thought.
Today, the 86-year-old Daido Moriyama, who doesn’t use social media and “knows almost nothing about the activities of other photographers,” still insists on shooting every day.
🌟The current exhibition "Moriyama Daido: Memory·Record" (Shanghai Station) is the largest exhibition of his photographic works in China to date.
✅ A total of 116 works, displayed on the first and second floors of Ho Tung's former residence.
1️⃣ Layer: Display his gelatin silver salt works, this black and white photography process is the mainstream way of the 20th century, stable in nature and able to fully show the details in the image, full of story.
On this floor you can also see Doro Moriyama’s documentaries, as well as his published photography collections.
2️⃣ Layer: Displaying the screen printing works of Moriyama Daido, this technical means, so that the photos show the unique texture of the ink, and from a distance, can get the overall screen perception.
It’s also reclaimed Shinjuku’s red-lipped bar, with Daido Moriyama becoming a classic by covering the entire bar with lip images.

📸 The former residence of Ho Tung, where the exhibition is located, is a legendary building.
In 1928, Ho Tung hired Hungarian architect Hudec to design the mansion in a neoclassical style.
It became the office of the Dictionary Publishing House in the 1950s and has not been open to the public. Every time I pass by Shaanxi North Road, I am always curious about this beautiful mansion.
This time, it was a good opportunity to enter the former residence of Ho Tung by resorting to the Moriyama Avenue Photography Exhibition.
