Danish fairy tale town | Ribe, feel the medieval romance
Ribe is a town built on a river in southwestern Jutland. It is relatively niche. It takes about three to four hours to take a train from Copenhagen (requires transfer, the train carriages may separate halfway to different destinations, don’t take the wrong one, don’t ask me how I know). Arrive at this place sealed by time.
This is the oldest town in Denmark and the birthplace of Danish culture. Strolling through the alleys of the town, a sense of tranquility and comfort hits your face. The cafes and 16th-century old houses with traces of time add a quaint charm to the town, as if you have traveled back to the Middle Ages.
The most famous thing about Ribe is Ribe Cathedral. It was built in the Viking Age and is the first Christian church in Denmark. It is built in Romanesque style and is located in the center of the town. Climb to the top of the church tower for a panoramic view of the entire town. The church is free, but tickets are required to climb to the top.
The Viking Museum is worth a visit. Here you can learn about the history of the Viking Age and the Middle Ages, and see how Ribe became an important historical figure. As the Nordic overlords at that time, as the people of Odin and Thor, the story of the Vikings is like the magical legend of Middle-earth in "The Lord of the Rings". The museum is located opposite the train station, and it takes about 1-2 hours to see it slowly.
From May to October every year, there is also the traditional "Night Watchman Tour" (free), which takes about one hour. In the past, night watchmen were responsible for maintaining order at night, and later the police took over their work. In 1932, the Night Watch was introduced as a traditional tourist attraction. The meeting point is at the entrance of Hotel Dagmar at 20:00.
Accommodation recommendation: Hotel Dagmar, breakfast is great.
Ribe, this medieval romantic town, is worth a visit if you are on the way. It feels a little far to go there alone, but it is still recommended.
