It's just a 10-minute walk away but feels much more quiet and local. The convent is small, with a nice garden and an old church where I saw several people praying during my visit - no big tourist crowds, just monks and locals going about their religious routines. They don't allow photos inside the main church, which helps maintain the quiet atmosphere. The interior is dim with old frescoes and the scent of incense. Outside there's a shrine marking where St. Nino is buried, plus some friendly stray dogs that seem to belong there. This place feels more like an active religious site than a tourist attraction. While Svetitskhoveli impresses with its size and history, Samtavro offers a more humble, authentic experience. Plan for about 20-30 minutes here, dress modestly (women need headscarves, everyone should cover shoulders and knees), and speak quietly to respect those who come here to pray.

This is a World Heritage monastery in Mtskheta, a town near Tbilisi, where St. Nino is said to have prayed. It is also said to be the place where the coronation and funerals of Georgian royals take place. It is located near the marshrutka stop for round trips from Tbilisi. There is a small museum nearby, so it's a good idea to stop by until the marshrutka arrives before returning to Tbilisi. The ancient city of Mtskheta and Stalin's hometown Gori are both located to the west of Tbilisi. We opted for a car rental 🚗 to visit these two places in one day. ⭕️ Main attractions in Mtskheta: ✅ Samtavro Monastery ✅ Svetitskhoveli Cathedral ✅ Jvari Monastery ⭕️ Main attractions in Gori: ✅ Stalin Museum ✅ Gori Fortress ✅ Uplistsikhe (Cave Town) 🔸 Mtskheta is closer to Tbilisi, while Gori is a bit farther. 🔸 Gori can be reached by train. If not renting a car, you can choose the train 🚊 to visit Gori alone, but public transportation might take more time. 🔸 Among the above attractions, only the Stalin Museum 🏛️ and Uplistsikhe require an entrance fee 🎫. 🔸 Jvari Monastery and Gori Fortress are located at higher elevations, making them suitable for late afternoon 🌇 visits to enjoy the panoramic views. It is recommended to schedule Jvari last for its beautiful scenery overlooking the city and the river 🌊. 🔸 Samtavro Monastery and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral ⛪️ are close to each other, about a seven to eight-minute walk 🚶‍♀️. 🔸 The Stalin Museum and Gori Fortress are relatively close to each other. 🔸 Outside the Stalin Museum, there is a train carriage 🚞, a ground floor exhibition hall, and a small exhibition hall between the first and second floors that are all 🆓 free.
