#getgoing2025 Sarushima, which floats off the coast of Yokosuka Port, is the only natural island in Tokyo Bay and the largest uninhabited island in the bay with a circumference of about 1.6 kilometres. Since it is located at the entrance of Tokyo Bay, it has been a key point for the Defence of the capital since the end of the Edo period. It is now a casual leisure island that can be crossed in about 10 minutes by a dedicated boat. When you enter the inside of the island, a huge brick remains appear. It is designated as a national historic site because valuable structures such as brick remains built in the French structure (Flanders structure) remain.

Yokosuka, located on the Miura Peninsula, is famous for its exotic streetscapes. From the moment you step out of the station, you can feel the unique atmosphere of American culture, with English signs everywhere (for renting houses, selling cars), just like an American village. ⋯⋯⋯⋯ Recommended attractions: Mikasa Park (one of Japan's top 100 urban parks) Sarushima (the largest uninhabited island in Tokyo Bay) Dobu Itadori Shopping Street (exotic cultural fusion) ICHIGO (a food supermarket converted from a giant freezer warehouse) ⋯⋯⋯⋯ Buy an embroidered jacket here, taste navy curry and American hamburgers, and take a look at Tokyo Bay and Sagami Bay. #thingstodo I took the first ferry in the morning (9:30am) for a short 10 minute ride to Sarushima. Beware, there are no monkeys on the island! But, other than that it was a nice experience. The entire island is easily walkable in less than an hour. There are several spots to visit of some historical significance but nothing overly spectacular. It was a nice activity if you’re in the area and have some free time but probably not worth making a special trip. There’s a guided tour available for an extra fee. The restrooms were clean but only available at the visitor center.

#2024wish Entrance to the island is buy boat and the pier is next to the Mikasa. There will be a queue for the boat onto the island so I recommend timing your visit or going early. The island is picturesque so don't be surprised to see wedding or cosplay shoots going on. I personally saw a three or four shoots and the cosplayers were nice enough to let me take some photos as well. On a clear day, you might even be lucky enough to see Mount Fuji above the Yokosuka skyline. Take your time around the island and take in the silence from the bustling Japanese cities. Also, time your visit so that you can minimize waiting for the boat back as well. In 2024, I want to visit this place again.

Sarushima means Monkey Island, but there are no monkeys here. It got its name during the Kamukura period, when a white monkey appeared and led a missionary to the island - who was trying to cross the sea but his boat got wrecked. That was the legend. This is a small island off of Tokyo, and the only natural island in Tokyo bay. Sarushima is a ten-minute ferry ride which starts from Mikasa Pier, that is adjacent to Mikasa Park, in Yokosuka.
