Back in 1975, it was founded as a sanctuary for orangutans who were injured, orphaned, or kept in captivity as illegal pets. Currently, the center serves as a habitat for orangutans, as well as a place where visitors can get acquainted with rare and endangered species. This wildlife center is home to a thriving population of healthy juvenile and young adult semi-wild orangutans. Most of the time they roam the forest, but they are taught to return to the center at feeding time, where they can get food from the rangers. The center is located 24 km from Kuching, and you can get here by bus for $1 (6, 6A, 6B, 6C) from Chin Lian Long Station. 📍 Itinerary Overview 1st day after arrived we went to Borneo Cultural Museum. It was a huge place to explore with different attraction at every level. We had to cancel our plan to Bako National Park due to heavy rain but then managed to go Semenggoh Wildlife Center to see Orang Utan🤩 2nd day went to Sarawak Cultural Village and spent the night strolling around Kuching Waterfront after dinner at Hotspot. I had no idea I’d get such a close-up look at the orangutans at Semeggoh wildlife centre in Kuching. There was a sign out front that said we probably wouldn’t see them because it was fruiting season and they had plenty of food. But guess what? As soon as we arrived for the morning feeding session, one 17-year-old male orangutan was already out, having breakfast! Apparently, there was another one nearby, another male, who was 19 and a lot bigger. The worker gave us some instructions to stay quiet and be patient, and finally, he appeared! #newyearnewtrip Located in Kuching Sarawak, this place is protected called Semenggoh Wildlife Centre. You can spend half day here, a little bit of walk in the jungle to see the semi wildlife Orang Utan. But you cannot touch them nor taking photo with them. Only can see from afar. Whenever in Kuching, we make it must see place to go. If you lucky you will see a lot of Orang Utan, they have their names and age put on the board there. But if you are unlucky or it’s fruit season, none will come out during feeding time. This place is approximately 40 mins drive from Kuching City Centre

visit Semenggoh Wildlife Centre if you are in Kuching. Here, you get to see Orang Utans living in the wild. Encounters with them do depend on how lucky you are since it is the Orang Utans who decide if they want to appear during feeding times when Park Rangers put fruits to supplement wild fruits they get in the forest. It's definitely worth a half day visit there. You will need to register your visit as it is in the nature reserves and strongly suggests buying the buggy ride to the feeding location to save you some uphill climb. #travellerswonderland It's basically open sanctuary for Orang Utan feeding. The park is exposed to the open forest for Orang Utan to come over for the food. Feeding time is on two sessions, starting at 8am in the morning and second session in the afternoon 2pm. You may get lucky enough to see Orang Utan come over for the food. There are few feeding stations in the park, will need to hike to those stations. From the registration counter and ticket, you can either walk to the feeding station or take the buggy shuttle bus with some charges. Very low chances to see Orang Utan during the rainy day because they may just stay in their shelter. Registration pretty well managed by scanning the QR code at the counter to your phone then present to the counter officer and make the payment of the ticket. There few rangers will prepare the food to the feeding stations and also give some briefing to visitors. There are clean public toilets too.

It's an exciting experience to see Orang Utan not in the cage and we are lucky to see at least 5 of them. One alpha, Edwin, the mommy and the baby, teenager orang utan and etc.. it's funny to observe their movement and action. The rangers explained to us about their stories and there is a small gallery with some explanation and also exhibits too. Just a 30-minute drive from Kuching, the Semenggoh Wildlife Centre was established in the 1970s as a sanctuary for the rehabilitation of rescued orangutans. Those apes - and their offspring - have grown into a semi-wild colony that lives freely in the 250-acre reserve. When fruit is scarce in the trees, between March and October, they return to special feeding platforms. While there are no guarantees, there's a high chance you'll see some of the orangutans descend from the trees to feed. It was a unique experience to be up close with the orangutans. You can see that they are well protected and even though they are being fed, some of them prefer hiding in the jungle to fend for themselves. For those visiting Sarawak, this is one of the few wildlife reserves that you need to check it out and it is easily accessible from Kuching city. Transport: There’s a direct bus to Semenggoh from Kuching. From Mosque Road in Kuching, take City Public Link bus, number K6 which stops at the Ticketing Booth of Semenggoh Nature Reserve. If you’re heading to the morning feeding session, the bus leaves at 7:15am. Arrive early, as it departs promptly or even a few minutes early. The bus fare cost is RM 4.00 each way. Located abour 20KM or 45 minutes from Kuching city, there is a natural habitat which acts as a home to Orangutans. The Semenggoh Wildlife Centre is by far the biggest Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in Sarawak. It was established as a sanctuary for Orangutans who are injured, orphaned or being kept captive as illegal pets. Currently, the centre serves as a habitat for the Orangutans and also a place for visitors to learn about the endangered rare species. This wildlife centre has a thriving population of healthy adolescent and young adult semi-wild Orangutans. They spend most of their time roaming the forest but are trained to get back to the centre during feeding times where they will be able to get a free meal from the caretakers. Though they have been trained to get back to the centre during feeding time, they may not appear to get a free meal during the forest fruiting season. As at today, there are over twenty Orangutans living at Semenggoh and the forest reserves carrying capacity has been reached. Sarawak’s orangutan rehabilitation activities have now been transferred to Matang Wildlife Centre but Semenggoh remains the best place in Sarawak to get up-close with orangutan. The best time to visit is during the morning and afternoon feeding sessions. These take place daily at 9am and 3pm respectively. It is a good idea to reach the centre before the feeding commences. Sometimes the orangutan come out early and hang out around. If you are there early you may get a chance to watch them before they move to the feeding platform.
