Nishi Park was built in 1875 (Meiji 8) and is the oldest park in Sendai City. It was called "Sakuranogaoka Park" in the Meiji era, and the name of the "Sakuranogaoka Shrine" adjacent to the park is still used today. On the east side of the city is "Gunanoka Park", while the park on the west side is called "Nishi Park". The name was officially used in Japan after the war. West Park is a very famous place for viewing cherry blossoms. There are steam locomotives, puppet towers, Basho sentence monuments, carvings by well-known writers and Wolong plum (protected trees) in the park, all of which are scenic spots and historical sites. On weekends, adults and children come here to play, and it has become a place for citizens to play. Especially in the season when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, many restaurants have set up stalls to entertain tourists who come to enjoy the flowers, which is very lively.
