Upon arriving in Sandakan, the first stop was the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. Stepping into this jungle reserve, the surroundings were so quiet that only the chirping of birds and the rustling of leaves could be heard. When the orangutans appeared at feeding time, their agile postures and intelligent appearances were amazing. They jumped and played among the branches, so similar to humans yet with a unique wild charm, as if every little movement was a demonstration of the wonders of nature. Along the journey, I came to the Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary. The proboscis monkeys are the stars here, with their exaggerated big noses being their most distinctive feature. Watching them shuttle through the woods, their big noses swaying with their movements, was adorable. Especially when a group of proboscis monkeys gathered to eat, the scene was lively, like a special forest feast. Turtle Island, on the other hand, is a place full of warmth and hope. When night falls, watching the mother turtles laboriously climb onto the beach to lay eggs, and the staff carefully collecting and protecting these precious turtle eggs, is like guarding the spark of life. The moment the baby turtles hatch and rush to the sea, it is like a relay of life, inspiring awe. The Kinabatangan River is like a winding jade belt, weaving through this land. At Tanini Sepilok Hotel, I met several cute kittens. The hotel is on a small hill, where you can pick rambutan and papaya, and see dragon fruit... The best thing is that it is very close to Sepilok and Labuk Bay, so it is very convenient to see orangutans, sun bears, and proboscis monkeys. Sepilok is the largest orangutan ecological reserve in the world. I have seen rescuers feeding these orangutans by hand, calming their emotions, and telling us their stories. The biggest difference between proboscis monkeys and other monkeys is that the nose of adult males becomes larger and larger with age, and the final length is even 7-8 cm. Because of the bright red color, it looks like a red balloon hanging on the face from a distance. Because this big nose always hangs in front of the mouth, it sways, and when eating, it has to be tilted to one side. Observing animals up close and absorbing knowledge from the natural world is the best natural education.

Visit Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary for up close viewings of these amazing animals! Come for feeding time at the platform (10am) or go to the nursery (9am) and sit in an air conditioned room whilst seeing orang utans of all ages and sizes! You can fit both in timewise too! The feeding is optional for the orang utans as the centre is in the rainforest with no boundaries. It is used as a training centre for orphaned young orang utans. Bring a camera, water and spend all the time available here (open till 12noon for morning session). Lots of people leave after the 10am feeding but you can see them for as long as the place is open as there's lots of food for them. A thing not to miss!

When Sabah became an independent state in Malaysia in 1963, a Game Branch was created in the Forest Department for the conservation of wild animals in the region. Consequently, 43 sq km of protected land at the edge of Kabili Sepilok Forest Reserve was turned into a rehabilitation site for orangutans and this is where Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre is located.
