The largest mangrove in Miyakojima and a city designated natural monument.
📍Shimaziri Mangrove Forest
When it comes to mangroves, Iriomote Island is famous, but in fact there are mangroves in Miyakojima as well.
Although it is well maintained, there are few people and it is a hidden spot, so it is recommended for those who want to take a leisurely walk in nature.
Mangroves are a general term for plants that grow in the mud of brackish waters (water areas where seawater and freshwater mix) near the mouths of rivers in tropical and subtropical regions.
Shimajiri Mangrove is the largest mangrove colony in Miyakojima, and is a place where you can see all the mangrove species that grow naturally on Miyakojima.
However, Miyakojima does not have a river that flows into the sea.
How did the mangrove forest develop?
In fact, there is an underground water vein that flows out near the coast, and Shimajiri Mangrove is a rare mangrove that developed there.
Mangroves that grow in areas without rivers are extremely rare, and are a very important site in terms of plant geography, and have been designated as a natural monument of Miyakojima City.
