The moment you step out of Onomichi Station, you're greeted by the sea breeze and the leisurely, romantic atmosphere of Onomichi. Unlike the tourist waves in Kyoto or Tokyo, I would say this is one of the best cities to relax your mind. Onomichi is also known as the City of Literature and has been the inspiration for many movies and art games. If you're a frequent consumer of Japanese culture, why not take a pilgrimage to Onomichi? Another highly recommended activity in Onomichi is cycling. Onomichi's famous Shimanami Kaido is a paradise for cyclists. The Shimanami Kaido, which connects Onomichi City and Imabari City, is Japan's first bike path that crosses a strait. All bridges are equipped with bike lanes. There are plenty of bike rental facilities, and even beginners can choose simpler routes. Bicycles can be rented in Onomichi and on various islands, allowing even beginners to enjoy the fun of cycling!

When I went to Ehime, I went on a road trip to the Shimanami Kaido, which I had always wanted to go to! There were people renting bicycles, so I'd like to try that next time. I've been living in Japan for almost a year without realizing it. In addition to the well-known Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, I've also visited quite a few smaller cities. Here are some of my personal favorite small cities for those who are struggling to decide where to go (in no particular order) ⭕ Takamatsu Takamatsu is the capital of Kagawa Prefecture in Shikoku, and it was the first place I visited on my trip to Japan 10 years ago. It has a famous nickname as the hometown of udon noodles, so you can enjoy various kinds of udon here. Also, the triennial 'Setouchi Triennale' art festival is an event not to be missed, and from Takamatsu Port, it's very convenient to travel to treasure islands such as Shodoshima, Naoshima, and Teshima. ⭕ Kochi It could be said to be the most low-key capital city in the Shikoku region. This is the hometown of the anti-shogunate warrior Sakamoto Ryoma. During my half-day city walk in Kochi, I truly felt the city's tranquil atmosphere. Additionally, I particularly like Kochi's trams, which have super cute liveries. ⭕ Tokushima Tokushima is also a place I visited on my first trip to Japan. The Awa Dance is a local specialty here, and you must see it. Also, the Iya Valley is a great place to escape the summer heat. ⭕ Onomichi A small city facing Shikoku across the sea from Honshu, it has both mountains and sea, and cycling is very popular here. Cycling from Onomichi to Shikoku's 'Shimanami Kaido' is known as Japan's most beautiful cycling route. Ramen and oysters are local specialties here. Oh, and Yasujiro Ozu's famous work 'Tokyo Story' was also filmed in Onomichi. ⭕ Kanazawa The largest city in the Hokuriku region of Japan. It is also a city with a 'high gold content.' Ninety-nine percent of Japan's gold leaf is produced here, so you can buy various gold leaf products, including food and drinks containing gold leaf. Additionally, one of Japan's three great gardens, Kenrokuen, is also located in Kanazawa. ⭕ Saga Saga in Kyushu is often rated as one of the cities in Japan with the least presence. But after going to Saga, I fell in love with it. Saga's ramen and Wagyu beef are really delicious, and the key is that they are much cheaper than in big cities. A double portion of Saga beef for just over 5000 yen is incredibly tempting. ⭕ Hakodate I've been to Hakodate twice, once in autumn and once in winter. Compared to Sapporo, Hakodate is much more interesting. From Mount Hakodate, you can see the million-dollar night view, and Goryokaku Park is a treasure with beautiful scenery all year round.

The Shimanami Kaido stretches between Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, and Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture. I found a delicious-looking cafe just before the first island on the Shimanami Kaido. Believe it or not, they fry pancakes! I looked at the sign thinking it was a lie, but it was indeed fried pancakes. I tried one, and it was crispy on the outside but fluffy and sweet on the inside, a new texture for me! The bicycle trip is long, so make sure to fill up on each island. This time, I went to Shimanami Kaido by bicycle! It's the perfect way to refresh yourself while enjoying the beautiful ocean views as you cross the bridges. We rented bicycles in Onomichi and took a ferry to Mukaishima. From there, we crossed the Innoshima Bridge, Ikuchi Bridge, and Tatara Bridge to reach Omishima! While crossing all the bridges can be time-consuming and physically demanding, this route is manageable even for beginners. We took short breaks along the way, and the journey took about 4 hours. From Omishima, we returned to Onomichi by ferry. The youth hostel we stayed in tonight is a traditional Japanese-style old house with a view of the Seto Inland Sea as soon as we opened the door. Since today is a travel day, let’s share the scenery during the ride! Onomichi is famous for its many temples, and there is also a temple tour trail. Just walk along the cobblestone alleys that undulate and crisscross the hills of Onomichi, and you can visit all 25 temples. There are many bicycle rental shops and ferry stations in the city of Onomichi. There is a ferry to Mukaishima every 5-10 minutes, and the ticket price is very cheap. The Shimanami Kaido connects Onomichi City and Imabari City, with a total length of about 70 kilometers. It is one of the most famous and most stunning bicycle routes in Japan. The Shimanami Kaido is known as a mecca for cyclists. As it is called a mecca, the cycling road is well maintained. There is a considerable difference in elevation in some parts because you have to cross a bridge, but it is super refreshing to be on the bridge. It was great to cycle while cutting through the wind and looking at the sea. You can enjoy the Seto Inland Sea to the fullest while eating delicious food at key points. Those with good legs and stamina can cover the 60km from Onomichi to Imabari in one go, but beginners can choose a course according to their stamina and time, such as staying overnight along the way or taking a boat from Onomichi to Setoda. We left Sunrise Itoyama, crossed the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge, strolled around Oshima, stopped by the Yoshiumi Ikiikikan roadside station, and returned to Sunrise Itoyama! We plan to stay in Kobe for three nights, visiting famous nearby attractions. There are also shops for renting bicycles and riding. Whether you want to ride in the city or go to Shimanami Kaido, it is no problem. Senkoji Temple overlooks the scenery of Onomichi. There are also many wind chimes here, which are very nice to hear in the wind! You can choose to go up and down the cable car or walk when you come to Senkoji Temple. On the other hand, the island has a population of about 5,000, and has a strong presence as the core of the Geiyo Islands in terms of living environment and commercial area. A symbolic example of this is the Omishima Branch of Ehime Prefectural Imabari Kita High School. This is the only high school on the island, and is a branch of Imabari Kita High School on the mainland of Shikoku, with about 80 students. Although it is a small branch school, it is characterized by an educational policy that is closely related to the climate of Omishima and the local residents. In particular, the "Island Design Club" has been working single-mindedly to promote the island's charm and revitalize it, such as by working as a volunteer guide for Oyamazumi Shrine and producing guidebooks for the island. However, due to the recent depopulation, the number of students enrolled has decreased, and the school is in danger of closing. When you enter the store, you will find sofas set up in the earthen floor of a Japanese-style house, and at the back there is a tatami room with the sweet scent of tatami.
