Hakone, not only Japan’s famous hot spring resort, but also dotted with art galleries, perfect for two days of roaming. If there is only one day, you can refer to the following node arrangement:
7:30 Departure from Shinjuku Station
Odakyu Romance 🚅, a direct express train to Hakone, only 80 minutes. All seats are available for reservation, with luxury coaches and large, translucent windows offering great views along the way.
"Romantic" is not included in the JR Rail Pass🎫 (JR PASS), which costs 2,330 yen for adults and can be booked online one month in advance.
9:30 Take the Hakone Tozan Railway
After arriving at Hakone-Yumoto Station (Odawara Station if you take the Shinkansen), take the Hakone Tozan Railway🚂. From Hakone-Yumoto Station, there are many beautiful views along the way, and it takes about 35 minutes to reach the last stop "Goro".
10:00 Hakone Sculpture Forest Museum
Get off at "Sculpture Forest Station" and walk for 2 minutes to the Hakone Sculpture Forest Art Museum. Tickets are 1,500 yen/person, discounts can be enjoyed by presenting a coupon or Hakone free pass.
12:30 Strong Ro
From the Museum of Art, walk 10 minutes to Goracho, where you can have lunch. The Gora area is the second largest hot spring destination in Hakone, after Hakone Yumoto, and some ryokans also offer daily hot springs♨️.
13:30 Hakone Mountain Cable Car
The Hakone Tozan Cable Car connects Gora and Mount Soun and is a transit point for the cable car and the Hakone Cableway. At 214 meters above sea level, the cable car 🚃 slowly climbs up through nature, the total time is 10 minutes.
13:45 Hakone Cableway
The connection between the cable car and the Hakone Ropeway🚡 is at Sounzan Station. The cableway can stop midway, and by purchasing a one-way ticket you can reach the last stop--Taoyuantai, departing every minute.
14:00 Owakudani
From the observation deck next to the station, be sure to check out the beauty of one destination, Mount Fuji and Lake Ashi. Please note that the extent of the website volcano🌋 alert, Owakudani is likely to be closed on certain days.
15:00 Lake Ashi
Get off the ropeway at Taoyuantai Station, which is the last stop - Lake Ashi🌊. Here you can take a half-hour trip on a Hakone pirate ship, where you can enjoy the natural scenery and beautiful views of the shrine on the other side.
16:00 Hakone Port
Take a boat 🚢 back to Motohakone Port, where you can enjoy the view of Mount Fuji and the lake. There are also many restaurants and shops to explore here, as well as the Hakone Shrine, famous for its torii gate that seems to stand on the water.
17:00 Return to Hakone-Yumoto Station
From Motohakone Port to Hakone-Yumoto, the express bus🚌 only takes 30 minutes. Please pay attention to the last timetable. Even though the last express train was missed, there were other buses before 8pm, but longer.
