The building is a combination of two former buildings, the original Atkinson Art Gallery and Library that opened in 1878, and the adjacent Manchester and Liverpool District Bank that was built in 1879. These were combined in 1923–24 and the interiors have been integrated. The original building is in Neoclassical style, and the former bank is in Renaissance style. The art gallery and library has been integrated with the Southport Arts Centre and is now known as The Atkinson. The ground floor of the former bank is used as a public library. In the floors above are a museum and an exhibition space. These house collections of fine art, decorative art, historical items, and exhibitions of items relating to Egyptology.

It was visited by steamliners in its heyday, but silting of the channel meant that by the 1920s very few steamers were able to reach the pier, and the service ceased in 1929. The pier fell into disrepair throughout the late 20th century, and by 1990 it was operating at a significant annual loss with rising maintenance costs. The local council sought to have the pier demolished, but were defeated in their attempt by a single vote.

Authentic town

Lying between Southport and Liverpool in England’s North West, Ainsdale beach is one where you can walk for hours I either direction and find it hard to get bored. Framed by the Irish Sea and one side and towering sand dunes on the other, this wide expansive beach is the perfect one to allow you four legged friend to get some exercise and maybe to have to have a dip in the sea #voyagevibes

Visiting Southport felt like a dream. I strolled down the iconic pier, with the Irish Sea sparkling under the sun. Kings Gardens was a peaceful retreat, where I watched families enjoy boat rides and children feed ducks. Lord Street’s Victorian charm was irresistible; I savored some Asian rolls and cake at a cozy café. As the sun set, I walked barefoot on the beach, the sky a stunning canvas of pinks and oranges. The day was pure bliss, leaving me with memories as warm as the seaside breeze.

Strolled along the sun-kissed shores of Southport, where the symphony of waves provided the backdrop to a coastal reverie. "Pier Promenade" unfolded, a mosaic of laughter, vibrant beach huts, and the distant call of seagulls. I had a good time from my journey with northern rail line to Wigan , from Wigan north western, using Aventi west coast to Birmingham new street . booking a bus to the hotel was a good experience, I will like to do it again soon .
