The lake formed when the Soyang River Reservoir, the largest reservoir in the East, was built in 1973. It is the largest man-made lake in Korea in terms of area and water storage. The routes opened with Chuncheon, Yanggu, Inje and other regions are called "inland sea". Zhaoyang Lake is known as a large-scale farm and a freshwater fish museum, and there are more than 50 kinds of freshwater fish such as sweetfish, trout, carp, eel, and ice fish. The valleys around the lake are suitable for fishing, and are also famous for icefishing in winter. Also nearby are Cheongpyeongsa Temple, a Goryeo-era temple, and Obongsan Mountain, famous for its strange stones. Yanggu County is surrounded by Yanggu Prehistory Museum, Fourth Land, Ulji Observatory, War Memorial Hall, Hachiro Waterfall, Hougu Spring, Cheonmi Valley, Wolmyung Valley, Suiruicheon, and Yanggu Hachiro Folk Museum. Around Inje County, which is located in the upper reaches of Soyang Lake, there are Jinglao Pavilion, Hakjeong Pavilion, Nae Seorak, Nae Incheon and so on. Above the reservoir is not only a dock for cruise ships, but also various convenience facilities.
