Honoring the Fallen: A Visit to the State War Memorial
On this Australia Day, I took a moment to reflect on the sacrifices that have shaped our nation by visiting the State War Memorial. Perched in Kings Park, Perth, this solemn tribute stands as a reminder of the bravery and dedication of Australian servicemen and women who fought for our freedom.
The memorial itself is breathtaking, offering panoramic views of the Swan River and the city skyline. Its towering obelisk, inspired by the Australian Imperial Force’s cenotaph in Egypt, is engraved with the names of thousands who never returned home. Walking along the Honour Avenues, lined with plaques dedicated to fallen soldiers, was a humbling experience that truly brought history to life.
What struck me most was the Eternal Flame, burning as a symbol of remembrance and gratitude. The whispers of the wind and the quiet reflection of visitors created an atmosphere of deep respect. Seeing families, veterans, and fellow Australians gathered here today reinforced the importance of keeping these memories alive.
If you haven’t visited a war memorial before, I highly recommend doing so. It’s a powerful way to honor those who paved the way for the freedoms we enjoy today. Lest we forget.

State War Memorial
#australiatrip The war memorial was gorgeous. Not only is the monument and pond surrounding it beautiful and informative but the view is exceptional. Try sitting around the edge of the seating area surrounding the monument itself and talking. No matter how far from someone you are, as long as you’re on the same bench, you can hear them even in a whisper.
Once you’ve seen the monument grab a drink and something to eat close by then head to the fence behind the memorial and check out the view which goes on for miles all the way to the other end of Kings Park. Bring a hat and sunnies on a hot day, it’s accessible for all, so get along and check it out!
