Imagine the painter working alone here, painting a work that will be sealed up after completion, and there is no possibility of it being recorded in history. During this trip to Shanxi, we chose two very distinctive on-site protected museums (built above the archaeological excavation area), one is the Northern Qi Mural Museum in Taiyuan, and the other is the Jin State Museum in Linfen. Northern Qi was one of the regimes in the late Northern Dynasties. The collision and integration of economy, culture and ethnicity strongly promoted the "Han-Tang Change" in history; the frequent flow of people and trade promoted political, economic and cultural exchanges, and foreign people, materials, ideas and art were widely absorbed; the scene of the prosperous Tang Dynasty was already showing signs of dawn. Jinyang (today's Taiyuan) was known as "Bafu" and "Xiedu" during the Eastern Wei and Northern Qi dynasties. For half a century, it was the place where the powerful and wealthy gathered and issued government orders. There was an aristocratic class that lived a luxurious life, a cultural circle that attached itself to the powerful and wealthy, and a cultural atmosphere that pursued splendor. However, my personal favorite is Exhibition Hall 1's Jiuyuangang Tomb, which, compared to the other tombs' murals that display scenes of the tomb owner's daily life, also includes a large number of mythical stories, especially legends from the 'Classic of Mountains and Seas'. Interested friends can try to find my favorite 'Lord of the Winds', a man dressed in red bitter tea who is nearly naked and in charge of the wind (top picture on P3), I even found his cultural and creative product at the visitor center (only one kind)... The best part of this trip 🌟🌟🌟🌟 Jinci Museum P5-P6 Located in the southwest corner of Taiyuan, a bit far from the city center, the Jinci scenic area includes Jinci Museum + Tianlong Mountain (due to limited time, only visited Jinci). When I visited the Northern Qi Museum in Taiyuan, I noticed that many tourists were clueless about what to focus on, or were overly fascinated by specific moments in the paintings (such as a horse getting startled and defecating), which is actually incorrect. As murals in tombs, they have preserved the art of that time for us, allowing us to understand the culture, clothing, painting, and architectural characteristics and standards of that period. The earliest surviving paintings can only be traced back to the Tang dynasty, while the underground world has captured that era from 1500 years ago for us. The authentic murals in the Northern Qi Museum this time come from the Jiuyuangang mural tomb in Xinzhou, the Northern Qi mural tomb at Shuiquanliang in Shuozhou (the tomb dates from the late Northern Qi period, and the tomb owner should be the military and political commander in charge of defending the Shuozhou area), the tomb of Prince Dong'an of the Northern Qi, Lou Rui, in Taiyuan, and the on-site preservation of the tomb of Prince Wu'an of the Northern Qi, Xu Xianshou. To summarize, the highlights are as follows: ☑️ Look at the 'Simplified Standard Beauty' new painting style of the Northern Qi The overall painting style is simple and brisk, with iron line outlines and heavy color filling. Some paintings have the technique of gradient shading, which is one of the earliest examples.
