Supper is like a vice— once you’re hooked, there’s no turning back. A while back, the most common late-night meals were mamak, fast food, and Ramly burger, followed by the arrival of lok lok. Nowadays, there are plenty of supper spots beyond just these. The supper scene in Johor Bahru has become more vibrant in recent years.

Green Taro Cake & Curry Bak Kut Teh? Unique Finds at C&L
#newyearnewtrip #travelanywhere On our road trip back from Batu Pahat to Singapore, we passed by C&L Restaurant in the Taman Jaya Putra area while searching for a lunch spot. The entire neighborhood was brimming with food choices, but this place stood out with its diverse menu, catering to all ages and palates.
One of the most eye-catching dishes was the Taro Sandwich Greentea Cake, a popular item that could be seen on many tables. It had an incredibly aesthetic presentation, resembling large emerald coins coated in a layer of black and white toasted sesame seeds. Expecting a chewy texture, we were surprised by its dense, cake-like consistency that was not overly sweet. It had a distinctive flavor that paired beautifully with unsweetened tea or coffee.
The Grilled Chicken Nasi Lemak was a comforting and well-executed classic. The rice was fragrant, the grilled chicken had a deep, smoky char, and the dish was completed with a perfectly cooked sunny-side-up egg. Every element came together harmoniously, making it a satisfying option for those craving a local favorite.
The Curry Bak Kut Noodles was a unique standout, unlike anything we had tried before. We were familiar with curry chicken and bak kut teh, but this was an unexpected fusion—tender, fall-off-the-bone pork ribs bathed in a rich, savory, and thick curry, generously poured over springy, Malaysian-style fried noodles. The flavors were bold, indulgent, and deeply comforting.
While the menu offered Western options like Carbonara, we wouldn’t personally recommend them, as the Asian dishes were clearly the restaurant’s strong suit.
The drinks were another highlight, beautifully presented in large Malaysian-style mugs with a signature foamy top. The Teh-C Iced topped with Vanilla Ice Cream and the Iced Milo Dinosaur Kosong were both refreshing, adding a nostalgic and indulgent touch to the meal.
The restaurant’s entrance had a modern aesthetic with a distinct Chinese influence, its walls painted a bold, vibrant red that gave it a warm yet striking presence. It was a fitting introduction to a place that seamlessly blended tradition with contemporary flavors.
