Climb up 52 steps to reach the Koun Shrine, where the famous Warring States general Kuroda Kanbei and his son, Kuroda Nagamasa, the first lord of Fukuoka Domain, are enshrined. Rather than talking about history, I would like to first talk about some interesting things about this shrine. The hand-water pavilion here is made of buffalo helmets. During the Battle of Sekigahara, Kuroda's army advanced to Gifu as a vanguard, but encountered heavy rain for several days. Kuroda Nagamasa slipped and almost fell into the river. Fortunately, the buffalo helmet was hooked by a branch. Since then, the buffalo helmet has been regarded as a symbol of luck, and this hand-water pavilion was made and donated by local believers. In addition, the money box for worshipping the temple has a small mechanism. As long as you put money in it, it will make the sound of a crane, which complements the picture of two cranes above the head. Because of the wisdom and courage of the Kuroda father and son, the goshuin here has a strong Warring States style, and of course there is also a spring limited edition. Even the amulet is a victory amulet, praying for victory. There is also a statue of Morato Taibei in the garden. He was one of the 25 samurai of the Kuroda family and became famous for holding the Nihonka, one of the three spears. Behind him is an eyedrop tree. It is said that the Kuroda family made their fortune by selling eyedrops and laid the foundation for their later rule of the domain. This place is 50 meters high and is located on Mount Aratsu, north of Fukuoka Castle. Unique shrine festivals and religious culture The festival of Nakajima Sontaro Inari Shrine is a major event that attracts a large number of believers and tourists every year. Every spring and autumn, the shrine holds grand festivals, and many believers come here to participate in the ceremonies and pray to the Inari God. During the ceremony, believers will offer various kinds of rice and fruits, praying to the gods for a good harvest and prosperous business. Shrine dedication ceremony During the festival, I had the opportunity to witness a traditional mikoshi procession. Statues of gods are placed on the mikoshi. As the festival progresses, believers, led by monks, carry the mikoshi through the roads around the shrine. During this process, everyone recites prayers, and the scene is solemn and sacred. 5. The natural environment of the shrine: tranquility and harmony The natural environment of Nakajima Sontaro Inari Shrine is refreshing. The shrine is surrounded by lush forests, with birds singing and flowers blooming, and the fresh air complements the peaceful atmosphere within the shrine. Walking on the trail, I couldn't help being attracted by the vibrant nature. Whether it was the branches and leaves of the trees or the occasional breeze, they all seemed to be telling the long history of this land. Address: 13-1 Nishikoen, Chuo-ku, Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture This shrine is located just inside the central entrance of Nishikoen. If you climb the large staircase on the approach to the shrine, the torii gate and main hall will spread out before your eyes. The grounds are not very large, but they are very clean, probably because they are well-maintained. Also, since it is on high ground, it has a good sense of openness to the sky, making it a very photogenic spot.
