Terrassa's Historic Religious Site
Mediterranean Coast Tour of Spain ~ Barcelona (Region)
The Church of Sant Pere is part of the monumental complex of the Egara Cathedral, a historic religious site that includes four impressive architectural structures. Its history spans over 2,500 years, covering various periods such as the Iberian era, Catholicism, Byzantine, Visigothic, Roman, and the modern era when it was reclaimed by the Catholic Church. This site now serves as a museum where visitors can admire remarkable Roman ruins, some of Europe's most significant ancient frescoes, and several spectacular altarpieces. It is the only ancient Mediterranean cathedral complex that has preserved its painted decorations.
Greek-style horseshoe-shaped ancient church
Mediterranean Coast Tour of Spain ~ Barcelona (Region)
The Church of Sant Miquel is the only one among the three churches in this monumental complex that has preserved its original 9th to 10th-century floor plan. It features a square layout with a Greek cross and a horseshoe-shaped apse that is polygonal on the exterior. The central dome is supported by eight columns, whose capitals are repurposed Roman and Visigothic designs. Beneath the apse lies the crypt of Saint Celerinus, which includes a small chapel with a trefoil apse. The old entrance has been sealed with wooden planks, and the current door was opened in the 17th century. The structure follows a Romanesque style, alternating rows of stone and brick. The central window of the apse is a brick-built cross arch.
The apse preserves pre-Romanesque frescoes depicting Christ surrounded by angels, with the Twelve Apostles below.

Modernist aesthetics left a rich artistic legacy in Terrassa
Spanish Mediterranean Coast Tour ~ Barcelona (Region)
In the Vallès Occidental area of Barcelona we find the town of Terrassa. The backdrop of this ancient Roman city is the mountains of the Muntanya de Monserrat Nature Reserve and the Sant Llorenç del Munt i L´Obac Nature Reserve.
The town, seat of the diocese of Egala from the fifth century, has a rich monumental heritage, including very interesting Visigothic and Romanesque churches. Sant Pere, San Miquel and Santa María have elements from the 6th and 7th centuries combined with later modifications from the Pre-Romanesque, Romanesque, Gothic and even Baroque periods. In addition to the novel architectural techniques, we must highlight the Romanesque frescoes and the numerous Gothic frescoes. Medieval Terrassa left many other important monuments in the city center, such as the Palau Tower and the Carthusian Monastery of Valparaiso Castle. Currently, both spaces house the Terrassa Museum. The modernist aesthetic of the late 19th and early 20th centuries left a rich artistic legacy in Terrassa, including houses owned by the wealthy bourgeoisie, such as the Masía Freixa, factories such as the Aymerich i Amat (now the Museum of Science and Technology of Catalonia), and public buildings such as the Town Hall.
