The Nagasaki Confucius Temple was built in Meiji 26 (1893) and was jointly funded by the Qing government and overseas Chinese in Japan. It is the only authentic Chinese-style Confucius Temple in Japan. Its architectural scale is comparable to that of this temple in Qufu City, Shandong Province. The main halls are all magnificent with yellow glazed tile roofs and white marble railings. The Dacheng Hall is enshrined with the statue of Confucius and the tablets of the 4 saints. On both sides are large stone statues of the seventy-two sages of Confucius' disciples. Each is about 1.8 meters high and weighs 2 tons. The full set of sacrificial utensils in the hall are copied from those of the Confucian Temple in Qufu. The essence of Chinese history, culture and traditional art can be seen everywhere in the temples represented by Yimen and Dacheng Hall, which show traditional aesthetics. The Chinese History Museum deep in the Dacheng Hall was built in 1983 to promote mutual understanding and cultural exchanges between China and Japan. Important cultural relics provided by domestic museums in China are permanently displayed here.
