After the new National Highway 214 was built, this old national highway was downgraded to Provincial Highway 236, from an altitude of over 3000 to 4292 meters, you can enjoy the Baima Snow Mountain, the cascading roads and grassland vegetation at close range, and you can see the Meili Snow Mountain in front when the weather is good. The drive to Baima Snow Mountain Pass is the highest road section in Yunnan, and it is also the border between Deqin and Shangri-La. 🛣️Deqin Road｜Difficult and beautiful The construction of Deqin Road started at the end of 2009. It is an important road connecting Diqing Tibetans and Nujiang Lisu. The completion of this road also means that the large loop of Yunnan tourism is finally opened, and there is no need to detour. It is more convenient to go from Yunnan to Sichuan! The Peacock Mountain Tunnel was the most difficult section during the construction of Deqin Road. It used to have to cross the Peacock Mountain Pass at an altitude of 3800 meters. Due to the harsh climate and perennial snow, it was affected by heavy snow from December to June every year and had to be closed, making the road impassable. Now that the Peacock Mountain Tunnel is open, it only takes less than three kilometers and an altitude of 3400 meters to drive through easily. 🛣️National Highway 219｜The picturesque mountains and rivers When I first saw this border line National Highway 219, I was a bit surprised. There are at least 200 kilometers of artificial sightseeing trails built along the road, with picturesque Bingzhongluo and the first bay of the Nujiang River. Continue north along Bingzhongluo to Tibet. National Highway 219 runs from north to south through the entire Nujiang Prefecture, with the Biluo Snow Mountain and Gaoligong Mountain on both sides of the river, forming a canyon landscape. There are many places to stop along the way, especially like sitting by the rolling waves of the Nujiang River, and taking pictures casually is very cinematic!

Winter and spring are the best seasons to visit the Nujiang River Valley, as summers in the valley are hot and rainy. Considering all factors, staying in Gongshan is a suitable choice. It's about 40 kilometers from Gongshan to Bingzhongluo, and about 70 kilometers to the Yunnan-Tibet border. For local tourists focused on sightseeing, you can skip staying in Bingzhongluo and just pass through. After breakfast, leave Gongshan County by the Nujiang River and head north along National Highway G219. In the early morning, before the sun fully crests the high mountains, the areas near the river are shrouded in mist, with houses and forests appearing and disappearing in the haze, creating a truly ethereal beauty. Near Bingzhongluo, park your car in the parking area near the viewing platform and stroll along the boardwalk to fully appreciate the First Bend of the Nujiang River and the surrounding scenery. Continuing onward, you'll pass Bingzhongluo Town and Qiunatong Village. There are parking areas along the highway at most scenic spots. After passing the checkpoint and driving for over ten kilometers, you'll reach the Yunnan-Tibet border. The road surface and scenery along this stretch are excellent. On the Yunnan side of the Yunnan-Tibet border area, the road is wide and parking is easy. In the distance, the road conditions within Tibet are not as good, likely due to geological limitations. After taking in the sights, you can return and choose to stay overnight in Bingzhongluo or continue south to Fugong County.

In winter, it's adorned with a silvery, ethereal, and mysterious aura. This trip was not only a visual feast but also a spiritual cleansing. I. First Encounter with Peacock Mountain: The Majesty of a Winter Wonderland Upon arriving at Peacock Mountain, I was greeted by a scene of pristine beauty after a fresh snowfall. The mountains were gently covered in snow, resembling a maiden draped in a rose-colored veil, gentle and serene. Sunlight pierced through the clouds, and the snow reflected diamond-like sparkles, dazzling yet captivating. The distant "Tianxin Twelve Lakes" were as clear as mirrors, reflecting the snow-capped mountains and the blue sky. The interplay of light and shadow created a dynamic, ink-wash painting-like scene. As dusk approached, the setting sun painted the snow-capped mountains in hues of red and gold, weaving a mesmerizing "Song of Ice and Fire" on the snowy landscape. When twilight faded and moonlight cascaded down, the entire mountain returned to its tranquil, pure white, with only the sound of the wind resonating with my heartbeat. II. Exploring the Hidden Wonderland: The Intertwining of Nature and Culture The core area of the "Three Parallel Rivers" in Northwest Yunnan, where Peacock Mountain is located, is a treasure trove of both natural beauty and cultural heritage. Driving along the Degong Highway, which took 16 years to build, offers breathtaking views of the Nujiang, Lancang, and Jinsha Rivers in a single day. The rime along the highway was crystal clear, the meadows were covered with a thin layer of snow, yaks strolled leisurely, and the primeval forests and cascading waterfalls added to the wild charm. In the Nujiang Grand Canyon at the foot of the mountain, villages of the Lisu and Nu ethnic groups dotted the landscape. By the fire pit in Laomudeng Village, villagers warmly welcomed me with "xiala" (homemade wine). The a cappella four-part harmony of the Lisu people echoed in the cold night, and the ancient "Dabia" played, narrating the stories of their people. Best Time to Visit: November to February, when snow scenery and folk activities intertwine. 2. Transportation: Drive along the Degong Highway to connect the Three Rivers scenery; or fly from Baoshan or Dali to Liuku, then head north along the "Beautiful Highway." 3. Must-Sees: The First Bend of the Nujiang River in Bingzhongluo, the Tea Horse Road in Wuli Village, and the Hapang Waterfall in Dulongjiang River, together forming a "Winter Warm Route." 6 Days in Nujiang - From a Foggy Place to a Windy Place The weather in February is unpredictable, so I changed my itinerary from A to B. The starting and ending points remain the same, and I'm satisfied! In February, the blue-green Nujiang River is rare, with red kapok, peach blossoms, pear blossoms, rapeseed flowers, snow, and clouds. It's amazing! I recorded both the original plan and the temporary adjustment. Itinerary Plan A Starting from Dali, head north along the Nujiang River, then south along the Lancang River, and visit Wuli Village, Peacock Mountain, and Tongle Village, before finally returning to a windy place! D1 Arrive in Dali - Laomudeng D2 Laomudeng - Bingzhongluo D3 Wuli Village - Qiuna Tong D4 Qiuna Tong - Peacock Mountain - Cizhong - Tacheng D5 Tacheng - Shaxi D6 Shaxi - Return to Dali Plan B I went north along the Nujiang River, but it snowed near Bingzhongluo, and the roads to Dulongjiang, Peacock Mountain, and Bingzhacha were closed, so I had to return along the Nujiang River. The weather in Nujiang is very different on sunny and rainy days, and I experienced both. D1 Dali - Lushui - Laomudeng, stay at Laomudeng Shangri-La Homestay. Arrive in Dali at 11:00 and head straight to the Xianfeng Bookstore, passing Jingzao Hall and Tiger Leaping Gorge along the way, and arrive at the homestay after 20:00. 🏨 It's very ordinary, but it's okay for one night. But it's at the highest point and has a large viewing platform facing the crown top. The morning view with clouds and mist is also worth seeing. D2 Laomudeng - Zhiziluo - Shiyueliang - Bingzhongluo, stay at Jixiashan Wuli Camp. Depart at 8:30 and visit Zhiziluo and Laomudeng first, passing Shiyueliang, but unfortunately, it was foggy and rainy, so I didn't see it. Arrive in Bingzhongluo around 15:00, and pass the First Bend of the Nujiang River and Zhanatong before entering. There are two viewing platforms on the mountain that are worth visiting, with a much better view than the check-in point along G214! Then go to Puhua Temple and Chongding Church, and check in at Wuli Camp after 16:00. 🏨 See another article. There is a section of road construction and traffic control before entering Bingzhongluo. Turn right at the road closure point and cross the bridge to take an old road. The road is unpaved and narrow, so be careful when driving. D3 Wuli Village - Lushui, stay at Nujiang Hilton Garden Hotel In the morning, I hiked and rested in Wuli Village in the rain. As the rain and snow got heavier and the surrounding road conditions worsened, I decided to return to Liuku at noon. There were already many falling rocks on the road, and I didn't return to the hotel until 20:00. 🏨 The facilities are okay, but the soundproofing is poor, so be careful if you mind. D4 Lushui - Dali - Shaxi, stay at Shaxi Mili Homestay Depart at 9:00. The driver took the national highway and then took the old road over the mountain to Shaxi in the afternoon, arriving at 15:00. It happened to be Friday, so be sure to go to the market! It's very interesting! D5 Shaxi, stay at the same place. The materials in Shaxi can be written in a separate article. D6 Shaxi - Return to Dali Fortunately, I rented a car for the Nujiang trip! The driver is a local from Nujiang, very familiar with Nujiang and the road conditions, and provides good service with a comfortable car at a reasonable price! The road on G214 is good, but many check-in points have narrow and steep roads, with many continuous uphill and downhill sections, especially when it rains and snows. It's not recommended to drive if you're not confident in your driving skills. I missed the Lancang River trip, maybe next time!

Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture is located in the western part of Yunnan Province, within the Nujiang Gorge of the Hengduan Mountains, bordering Myanmar to the west. G219 serves as the main (and perhaps the only) transportation route running north-south through the prefecture. The road conditions on the Nujiang section of G219 are excellent, but as you continue from Bingzhongluo Town towards Chayu County in Nyingchi City, the road conditions suddenly deteriorate, turning into the famous 'Bingcha-Cha' crossing route. Our trip focused on Nujiang Prefecture and was conducted in winter. Daytime temperatures in the dry-hot valley can exceed 20 degrees Celsius, but nighttime temperatures are low, so be sure to adjust your clothing accordingly. The Nu River is majestic and grand during the summer flood season, while in winter, it shows a quieter side. Without the influx of rainwater carrying sediment, the quiet waters of the Nu River in winter reveal a rare blue color, like a gemstone. Not far into Nujiang Prefecture, you will reach the capital, Lushui City. The county town is built along the Nujiang Gorge, with a narrow and long structure. The local economy is not highly developed, and the roads in the town are narrow with compact houses due to the terrain. Less than an hour's drive from Lushui City, you can reach Dengeng Bathhouse. Dengeng Bathhouse is a free natural hot spring located by the Nu River. During the flood season, the rising waters of the Nu River submerge it, while in the dry season, it emerges. Many local Nu and Lisu people enjoy soaking in the hot spring and are very enthusiastic about introducing the area to visitors. The hot spring is highly recommended. Near the hot spring, you can also experience the Nu River zip line, a paid activity developed by local villagers. The zip line is a traditional way for locals to cross the river before bridges were built. A round trip costs 50 yuan and is quite thrilling. Heading upstream along G219, you can stay in Laomudeng Village. It is recommended to stay in a high-altitude guesthouse to enjoy views of the Nujiang Gorge, Crown Mountain, and even the perennial snow on Gaoligong Mountain. The local people are simple and honest, and prices are not high. The guesthouse owner where we stayed was a Nu girl who was very hospitable and cooked delicious traditional local food. Further up from Laomudeng Village is the former capital of Nujiang Prefecture, the lost town of Zhiziluo. Zhiziluo was once a major transportation hub connecting Nujiang Prefecture with the outside world, with frequent trade and gradual development. However, due to geological factors, all residents moved to Lushui City, leaving behind an empty town that still retains the appearance of the last century. Continuing south, you will pass Shiyueliang. Shiyueliang is a rock formation with a large circular hole in the middle, formed by erosion. Later, the mountain body uplifted, pushing it to the top of the mountain, resembling a full moon. You can view it from a viewing platform beside G219, and you should also be able to climb up if you enter the scenic area. The innermost part of Nujiang Prefecture is the famous Bingzhongluo Township. Overlooking from the viewing platform, it is indeed a place where immortals reside. The houses on the dam are scattered, with snow-capped mountains above and the rushing Nu River below. Occasionally, you can hear the crowing of roosters and barking of dogs, with smoke curling up from the rooftops, presenting a peaceful scene. The first bend of the Nu River is also spectacular, and it is recommended to go to the viewing platform on the mountain top, which all the guesthouse owners know how to reach. Crossing the Nujiang Gorge to the west, you can reach Dulongjiang Township. If you are lucky, you may see tattooed women, but the road conditions are poor, and you need to make a reservation to enter. Precautions: 1. Driving in the valley, be cautious of falling rocks on cliffside roads. 2. There are many blind turns, so slow down and drive carefully. 3. Adjust your clothing in a timely manner. 4. Respect religious beliefs. French missionaries preached in Nujiang Prefecture in the last century, and there are churches and a certain number of Christians in the area (such as in Laomudeng). After passing Bingzhongluo, you will soon enter the Tibetan area, where Tibetan Buddhism also appears as you go further in.
