The Temple of Artemis was once selected as one of the Seven Wonders of the World along with the pyramids and the Hanging Gardens. It was built for the goddess Artemis in Greek mythology. When it was first built, it was larger than the Parthenon in Athens, and it is a glorious presence in the Western world, with its 127 pillars carved at the base of each. But it didn't work as expected. In 356 BC, this beautiful and splendid temple was burned down by the Greek Herosstatus, and the rebuilt temple was later damaged by the Goths. It was not until 1869 that archaeologist John Tetau Wood discovered the ruins of the Temple of Artemis, which brought the temple, once regarded as the Seven Wonders of the World, to the light of day. The excavation work continued until 1874. At the site of the Temple of Artemis today, people used excavated marble to form a stone pillar as a marker.
