The capital, Valletta, is a city that retains a medieval atmosphere. It has a slightly different atmosphere from other European countries. A bit Arabic? Islamic? That's the vibe I got. Valletta is a city with a lot of ups and downs, with fortresses and many ups and downs. There are also prosperous areas and resort-like parts! You can get around Valletta by bus! From Valletta, you can take a day trip to see the Blue Grotto and go to Marsaxlokk, where you can enjoy fresh seafood and a market on weekends! In Marsaxlokk, you can see traditional Maltese boats! They are colorful and cute! The seafood is also delicious, so be sure to go! The Blue Grotto is called the Blue Grotto. You don't need to make a reservation, so be sure to go on a nice day! Head to the stunning capital city of Malta, that is Valletta. Known for its museums, palaces and grand churches, this walled city is a cultural masterpiece. After walking in through the city gate, we headed over to Auberge de Castille. Sitting at the highest point of Valletta, this building was built in the beautiful Baroque style architecture in the 1740’s. From here, you can get some great panoramic views of the city, and it is also just a stones throw away from the Upper Barraka. Many people describe this as one of the best views in Malta, and they’re not wrong. The garden is beautiful in its own right, but when you step out onto the terrace and are treated to the views of the grand harbour and the three cities, you can’t help but be blown away. It’s also from here that you can witness a bit of history that you won’t want to miss. Every day apart from Sunday, at midday and 4pm, the guns are fired from a restored British Saluting battery, located at the lower tier of the bastion. Here’s my top tip - don’t pay for entry into the bastion. You get a perfect view from the gardens, and you don’t have to pay a penny. By this time, you’ve probably worked up an appetite, so after a bit more exploring, make sure you grab a pastizz. It’s a savoury pastry, with either ricotta or curried peas inside. They’re a cheap eat, so why not grab one of each! To finish off the day, make sure you check out Valletta at night. One particular highlight is the Triton Fountain after sunset. However, since it only takes 2-3 hours to go from north to south, I stayed there for a week and took a local bus to see every corner at my leisure. If you rent a car, I think you can get around in 3-4 days! 1st and 2nd photos: The seaside from St. Julians to Sliema I had heard that there were a lot of cats around the area with the cat statue, but unfortunately I didn't see many of them, even though there were many houses for cats. Malta's beaches are mostly rocky rather than sandy, but the locals were sunbathing on the rocks. 3rd and 4th photos: Mdina The old town of Mdina was used as the setting for Game of Thrones and has a very atmospheric feel. There are horse-drawn carriages running around, and it feels like you've traveled back in time 🐎 Because it's not a very large tourist destination, all the restaurants are extremely crowded at lunchtime and you're bound to have to wait. It might be better to avoid meal times, especially on weekends? 5-9th photo: Valletta The capital city of Valletta has many attractions, including shopping for souvenirs, dining, cathedrals, palaces, and the Upper Barrakka Gardens with cannons. At noon and 4pm, cannons are actually fired, so it's highly recommended to visit at those times! Valletta has many cobblestone streets and slopes, so it's quite difficult to move around with a suitcase. There are some very steep slopes, so you'll need comfortable shoes! 10-13th photo: Marsaxlokk A port town in the south. It takes about 40 minutes by bus from Valletta. There is a morning fish market on Sundays, and even if you can't actually buy anything, it's fun just to look at it. There are many shops where you can buy souvenirs such as Maltese lace and local specialties, and they are relatively affordable, so I recommend it! There are also many restaurants where the seafood is delicious! The langoustine and mussels were delicious! 14th and 15th photos: Comino Island Comino Island, with its crystal clear blue sea, is a remote island that can be reached by boat in about 20 minutes from the northernmost tip of Malta (about an hour by bus from Valletta)! It is famous for its high transparency, so that you can see the boat floating when there are no waves. If you want to go swimming, I think Comino Island is the best place to go! This was around the beginning of October, but it was about 28°C, so it wasn't cold at all and we were able to swim in the sea. It's a pretty small island, so it gets like potato washing around noon, so I recommend going in the morning! 16th-18th photos: Gozo Island Gozo Island, located to the north of Malta Island, can be reached by ferry from the northernmost tip of Malta Island or by high-speed boat from Valletta. We were supposed to go on a tour, but it was canceled at the last minute, so we were late and went on our own, so we didn't get to see much at all. Upper Barrakka Garden is probably the most famous garden in Valletta. It’s a beautiful garden with lots of shade and a beautiful central water fountain. It has great panoramic views over the Grand Harbour and the saluting battery. There is a café here also making the park very popular with tourists. It brought me to beautiful cities, ancient historical relics, and dazzling natural attractions. Day 1: VALLETTA is Malta’s largest and most visually striking city. Deemed “a city built by gentlemen for gentlemen” upon its founding, Valletta is full of 16th-century elegance and grace. Malta’s romantic and picturesque capital city is characterized by brightly colored balconies, narrow alleyways and domed cupolas. Spend whole day exploring the cathedrals, forts and twisting streets of Valletta. In that time, I visited the Co-Cathedral of St John, strolled through the Upper Barakka Gardens, and soaked in views of the city’s pictureque skyline from its waterfront. Day 2: The Three Cities of Malta offer an intriguing insight in the island’s history. Left largely unvisited, these fortified cities offer a glimpse into Malta’s maritime fortunes. Mdina: The Silent City The mysterious gold-stone city of Mdina sits smack in the middle of the country and affords breathtaking views of the island’s arid terrain from its fortified walls. Deemed Malta’s Silent City, Mdina is characterized by shaded alleyways, arched doorways exquisite balconies and the beautiful St Paul’s Cathedral that towers over the city’s maze of golden buildings. Day 3: Southern Malta. Marxaslokk Fishing Village is a quaint and colorful fishing village characterized by its picturesque harbor. In the Marxaslokk Harbor, traditional boats bob up and down, creating a colorful contrast to the city’s golden buildings. These cheery boats are known locally as luzzus and are painted in bright, primary colors. Each boat is decorated with eyes that are said to protect the fishermen at sea. Every Sunday, the whole population of Malta seems to flock to Marxaslokk to attend the fish market–a weekly affair featuring everything from swordfish to sea bream to rockfish to clams. Then try St Peter’s Pool–a nearby swimming hole that is a favorite among locals. Had my day trip to southern Malta gone flawlessly, my visit to the megalithic temples would have been followed by a stop at the Blue Grotto. Yet, a combination of poor planning and a winter reduction in visiting hours meant that I arrived at the site’s ticket booth shortly after it had closed. It was only 3:30pm, but the last boat ride to the caves had already left a few minutes prior.
