Vilnius is the only capital city among the Baltic States that is not located by the sea. The town expanded around Gediminas Hill, which is situated at the confluence of the Vilnia and Neris rivers, from which the city gets its name. The old town, with its narrow cobblestone streets that form a maze, is home to historical buildings of various styles such as Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque. Additionally, the town is filled with charming cafes, restaurants, and souvenir shops, making it a delightful place to explore on foot.

After my trip to the three Baltic States, I really liked Lithuania as an off-the-beaten-path destination. Of course, when you come to Lithuania, you have to visit Vilnius. I've summarized a fun guide to the Old Town of Vilnius, and this article is all you need! ▫️ 💛Fun💛 📍Vilnius Cathedral: A very important local church, the interior is Baroque style, but it used to be wooden Gothic. The building is very well-preserved, and the murals and pipe organ inside are exquisite. · 📍Gate of Dawn: The old city gate, also the only one of the original nine gates that is still intact. Walking through the gate, you enter the Old Town of Vilnius. · 📍St. Anne's Church: A small and beautiful brick-red church, with very delicate lines and turrets. It is said that Napoleon wanted to 'move' the entire building to France because of its beauty. · 📍Užupis: Known as 'the land across the river,' this place used to be a gathering spot for hippies, so you can see a passionate and cheerful style from the graffiti and sculptures. · 📍Gediminas' Tower: It is said that Grand Duke Gediminas had a dream about an iron wolf, and then he ordered the construction of this fortress. It's a great spot to overlook the Old Town and take beautiful panoramic photos. · 📍Hill of Three Crosses: Located on the Hill of Three Crosses, the scenery along the way is truly beautiful in autumn. It's also a good spot to view the cityscape, but there are often many young people who come here to hike and run. · 📍Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania: It is now a museum witnessing the history of Lithuania, but many people say that the museum's collection is not very large, and those who don't like to visit exhibitions or museums can take photos outside. ▫️ ❤️Eat❤️ Lithuanian cuisine is still dominated by big fish and meat, and the cooking methods are relatively simple, so for someone with a Sichuan stomach like mine, it's really not acceptable. However, you can buy Southeast Asian spices in many supermarkets here, so if you want something spicy, you can consider that.

You can also take the bus from Riga or Warsaw and be in Vilnius in a few hours. Vilnius is not too big and you can walk most places. This is the only surviving gate of the first original five gates in the city wall that was built between 1503 and 1522. The painting of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Mercy, in the Chapel of the Gates of Dawn is known all over the world. The picture, which is also called “Vilnius Madonna”, was painted in 17th century. It is painted in the Renaissance style, in tempera on oak boards, later repainted in oil. Vilnius, Lithuania, November 2024 @mon.vln is a contemporary café nestled among the cobbled streets, historic architecture, and landmarks of Vilnius Old Town. Warmth pours out through the windows of this otherwise nondescript building, while inside, modern lines and decor provide a striking contrast to the historic beauty of the Old Town. I believe it’s relatively new, as it hadn’t appeared in any of my previous searches for speciality coffee spots, but it wholeheartedly deserves a place on the list. On this visit, I went a bit off-piste, I’ll blame it on the snow which had just started to fall outside. Drawn in by the promise of warmth, I opted for a tempting hazelnut mocha and a chocolate bun. Doubling up on the cocoa was perhaps a bit decadent, but the day was going well and I felt I deserved it, especially since I’d missed lunch earlier.

Vilnius is one of the only capitals in Europe where it’s completely legal to fly in a hot air balloon over the city legally. The views down below are completely breathtaking and you can either fly directly over the Vilnius old town or choose, like I did, to fly over the nearby city of Trakai instead looking down upon it’s beautiful lakes and castle as you soar in the balloon with an experienced driver. Lithuania is becoming more and more popular and it’s easy to see why as it hosts so many incredible other spots outside of the capital like the Hill of Crosses (a hill made up of over 200,000 crosses), the dunes of Nida and the amazing cities of Kaunas and Klaipeda.
