Japan's Northernmost City and Seafood Delights
Japan's northernmost city, surrounded by the Sea of Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk, is renowned for its abundant seafood.
The "Kita no Aji Kokoro TAKE-chan (竹ちゃん)" restaurant, located just a 5-minute walk from JR Wakkanai Station, is highly recommended. Upon entering, you'll see tanks filled with crabs, oysters, and Wakkanai's famous Mizudako (water octopus), which is the star ingredient in their signature dish, Mizudako Shabu-shabu. Simply dip the octopus in the hot pot for 4-5 seconds, then enjoy it with sesame sauce for the best flavor. Other menu highlights include fried octopus, grilled squid, fresh oysters, local sashimi, and the rare "fried flounder cake." Even when flounder is ground into fish paste and deep-fried, it remains delicious!
