In a time of glory long bygone, Yuen Chau Kok of Shatin was a waterfront area with ocean access. Most of the south Shatin Sea (Tide Cove) was filled by the Hong Kong Government’s reclamation efforts during the 1970s, a time that I have no personal memory of. Its name meaning “the House of the Wongs,” Wong Uk belonged to the Wong Clan, who came to Hong Kong during the Qianlong reign of the Qing dynasty (1736-1795) from Xingping in Guangdong. Wong Uk was once a village, like so many other walled villages of Hong Kong. The Old House of Wong Uk was built by the 19th generation of the ancestor Wong Tsing-wo circa 1911. In its heyday, the Wong Uk Tsuen Village was bustling with visitors. Travelers and merchants carrying goods for trade often stopped in this part of Hong Kong as a rest stop enroute between Guangdong and Kowloon. The Wongs had once built a hotel next to the Old House of Wong Uk to provide accommodation, and it had booming business. After the reclamation efforts of the late 1970s, the Hong Kong Government then began to resume the ponds and agricultural land for development in Shatin. With many of the villagers moving out as well, the Old House of Wong Uk became the only of what remains in the former Wong Uk Tsuen Village in Yuen Chau Kok now. I think Wong Uk has been well-restored. Wang Yuk Village is located southwest of Yeung Chau Point and was built more than 200 years ago by a couple surnamed Wang from Xingning, Guangdong. At the end of the 19th century, many of the ancient buildings in Wang Yau Village were abandoned and demolished as the Sha Tin Sea continued to be filled with land to develop the new town of Sha Tin. All that remains is this ancient house, which has become a marker of the history of Cape Round Chau. This century-old house is two stories high, made of blue bricks, and contains fine murals and traditional decorations. Retained in King House Gardens near Riverside Gardens, Sha Tin. The ancient house is a typical traditional Hakka dwelling, the layout and architectural features are nearly completely preserved. The very center of the nine spaces is the patio, which is well lit. The main hall houses an introduction board to the history of the King House, and the friendly staff will also provide you with a leaflet that you can request if you are interested. In addition to visiting the Yaguya, the King House Garden is also a public rest area with different plants planted around it. Behind Wangwu Garden in Shatin, there is a small street at the entrance of Yuanzhou Kok Park. Several restaurants there have a history of at least 30 years. Among them, "Qingyuan Restaurant" has always been my favorite restaurant. Sit at the dining table at the door, order a 58-yuan steamed mackerel with black bean sauce, take a sip of strong hot coffee, watch the pedestrians walking slowly, listen to the birds singing in the trees, taste the smooth mackerel meat without any fishy smell, and the sweet pork ribs and white radish soup. This feeling of lingering fragrance on your teeth and cheeks is really a slow-living enjoyment!
