I've been to Chongqing three times this year, and each time I make sure to visit Longmenhao Old Street. As an outsider, I find it particularly characteristic of a mountain city. This month I went to Chongqing again and discovered that right next to Longmenhao, a new old street area, Xiaohao Li, had opened up, and it's really super photogenic. It felt like the city was whispering stories from the past, and I was there to listen. There weren’t many people around, just a few locals and the occasional cat slinking through the alley. The stillness added to the magic. This isn’t a place you rush through. It’s where you stroll, pause, and soak in the mood — even if you’re a little lost. Right after stepping off the Yangtze River Cableway, I wandered into the charming old streets of Longmenhao (龙门浩) and Xiahaoli (下浩里) — and it turned out to be one of the most peaceful moments of my Chongqing trip. The cooling weather made strolling around especially pleasant, and best of all, there were no crowds. Just quiet alleys, timeworn brick walls, quirky art corners, and that perfect blend of old Chongqing with a modern twist. I found plenty of great photo spots, from hanging lanterns to old-style shopfronts that look straight out of a film set. It’s hard to believe this little pocket of serenity is just a short walk from the busy cableway terminal. Climbing to the vantage point near the old teahouse,I gasped at the panorama—the Yangtze River glittering below,framed by the sleek arc of Dongshuimen Bridge,where modern traffic flows above this forgotten pocket of history. Wandering downhill, I ducked into hipster cafés tucked into Qing-era buildings, browsed handmade workshops and couldn’t resist a steaming bowl of suanlafen (sour-hot sweet potato noodles)from a granny’s stall.
