The most spectacular ancient city in Yazhou, Hainan

Introduction: Yazhou Ancient City has a long history and is known as "a place of prefectures and counties for eight dynasties with a history of two thousand years of construction".
According to historical records, Yazhou City was an earthen city before the Song Dynasty.
In the fourth year of Qingyuan in the Southern Song Dynasty (1198), bricks were used to build the city wall, and a concave and convex parapet was created; in the sixth year of Shaoding (1233), the city wall was expanded again, 242 feet long and 16 feet high, with three gates in the east, west and south.
In the first year of Yuantong in the Yuan Dynasty (1333), the state judge Li Mi continued to repair the city and built a watchtower.
In the Ming Dynasty, in the ninth year of Hongwu (1376), the prefect Liu Bin reinforced the city with bricks and stones. In the seventeenth year of Hongwu (1384), Li Qian, a captain of Danzhou, expanded the city again, from Hainan Road to the west gate of the city, with a circumference of 513 zhang 5 chi, a height of 2 zhang, and a thickness of 9 chi. The following year, Li Xing, a captain of Danzhou, thickened the city wall with bricks and stones, and built a watchtower on each of the three gates, with 1017 battlements and 20 garrisons for soldiers to take turns guarding the city. In addition, a trench was dug outside the city wall to protect the city, with a circumference of 557 zhang and a depth of 1 zhang 5 chi. In the first year of Jianyuan (1399), Zhou Zong, a captain of Danzhou, expanded the city wall with a circumference of 557 zhang and a depth of 1 zhang 5 chi. Li built a moon city outside the city gate; in the 16th year of Yongle (1418), the prefectural commander Hong Jue continued to repair the city; in the first year of Zhengtong (1436), the commander Chen Zheng and Hong Yu rebuilt the suspension bridges on the moat outside the three city gates; in the 14th year of Chenghua (1478), the commander Wang Zeng repaired the city; in the 2nd year of Hongzhi (1489), the prefect Hu Jiao repaired the city; in the 18th year of Hongzhi (1505), the commander Hu Zheng erected plaques at the east and west gates, with the east gate named "Yangchun" and the west gate named "Zhenhai"; in the 14th year of Chongzhen (1641), the prefect Qu Han rebuilt the city wall and raised it by three feet.

In the 18th year of Shunzhi in the Qing Dynasty (1661), the governor Mei Qin rebuilt the East City Tower; in the 11th year of Kangxi (1672), the governor Zhang Zhuoshi and the guerrilla Zhang Deyuan donated money to build the West City Tower and the South City Tower, and repaired the Qianyue City; in the 12th year of Daoguang (1832), the prefect Wang Yuzhang and the governor Qin Yong donated money to rebuild the city, and at the same time moved the South Gate 30 meters east to the central axis of the Imperial Academy; in the 21st year of Daoguang (1841), the new South Gate was built, and the governor Xu Menglin took office, inscribed a plaque and named it "Civilization Gate".
During the Republic of China period, from the 9th to the 10th year of the Republic of China (1920-1921), the East and West City Gates were demolished and roads were opened into the city; in the 17th year of the Republic of China (1928), a section of the North Tower City Wall was demolished, and a road was opened to the outside of the city. Afterwards, the Yazhou City Wall was gradually destroyed, but the Civilization Gate remained.
