🇯🇵30 minutes direct train to Tokyo! Yokohama Yamate Western-style House Walking Route
#TokyoItinerary
The Yamate area, adjacent to Yokohama Chinatown, hides an exotic atmosphere frozen in time. Since Yokohama opened its port in the Edo period, this place has been a residence for foreigners. Dozens of well-preserved Western-style buildings still stand here. Walking here on a sunny day is like walking into a quiet old European movie.
🌿Selected walking routes (all free to visit!)
Slowly going up the lush slope, 6 historical buildings of different styles string together a unique experience:
1. Yokohama City Igirisukan (Former British Consulate General)
The Victorian-style building, with red bricks and green vines, displays diplomatic documents and daily utensils from the past. The lawn outside the balcony is a great place for sitting quietly and daydreaming.
2. Yamate 111
The wooden Western-style house is paired with a Japanese-style courtyard. The living room with warm yellow tones is full of retro atmosphere, and the garden by the window is suitable for taking Japanese-style photos.
3. Yamate 234
This Nordic-style building is famous for its "wave roof". The interior displays trade materials from the port opening period, and the second-floor terrace overlooks Yokohama Port.
4. Ellisman Residence
The former residence of an American pastor, the white wooden building is surrounded by tulips and roses, and it looks like a fairy tale scene when the flowers bloom in spring.
5. ブラフ18th episode (Picture 7)
The most popular check-in spot! The pure white Western-style house is matched with green curtains, and the stairs and lawn in front of the door form a classic picture, which is suitable for taking fresh photos.
6. Diplomat’s House (Important Cultural Property)
The villa combines Western and Japanese elements. The stained glass in the entrance and the crystal chandelier in the living room are particularly exquisite, showing the beauty of the fusion of different eras.
⚠️Practical Tips
• Anti-insect measures: There are more mosquitoes in wooded areas, so remember to spray insect repellent.
• Dress code: You are required to take off your shoes when visiting the museum. We recommend wearing loafers or shallow-mouthed shoes that are easy to put on and take off.
• Time arrangement: The whole slow walk takes about 4-6 hours. It is recommended to start in the morning and have a picnic and rest on the lawn of Yamate Park in the afternoon.
🚃Transportation
From Tokyo Station, take the JR Keihin-Tohoku Line to Yokohama Station (about 25 minutes), then transfer to the Tokyo Metro Blue Line to Chuagai Station. It is a 10-minute walk to the Yamate Western-style buildings.
Leaving the bustling Chinatown and turning into this green slope, the pace of time suddenly slows down. The moss on the brick wall, the bouquets on the windowsill, the sunlight in the gaps of the stairs, every detail is worth stopping to notice. If you love city walks and historical charm, this route surrounded by flowers and old buildings will definitely fill the space on your camera memory card and in your heart.
