Shimla is known for its lush green valleys and amicable air around the city.
I visited Shimla during April end. The temperature was neither too hot nor cold at that time.
I started from Chandigarh and reached Shimla by cab. It was repugnant as all the roads were under construction due to which all greenery is vanishing on the way.
I booked an apartment through AIRBNB. It was somewhat far from the main city but the stay was enjoyable.
There are limited options to explore in Shimla.
I visited Mall Road, The Ridge, Lower Bazaar, Tibetan Market, Lakkar Bazaar and Jakhoo Temple.
It is advisable not to carry anything while visiting Jakhoo temple as there are lot of monkeys ready to play with you there.
One can enjoy delish street food in Lower & Lakkar Bazaar.
Around Shimla, one can explore nature and its beauty.
River Rafting in river Satluj ( Chaba, Shimla ) was a delighful escapade.
One can also enjoy Horse riding in the hills of Naldhera.
I visited Hatu peak, Narkanda and the view was magnificent. It is located at an elevation of 11,152 ft above sea level.
At last, grabbed the toy train from Shimla to Kalka. The Kalka-Shimla Railway line comes under UNESCO world heritage site.
Some things to remember :)
-> Carry umbrella with you to avoid torrential rains in Shimla.
-> Purchase Himachali cap as a souvenir.
-> People are polite and humble in Shimla!!!

Narkanda is a town and a nagar panchayat in Kumarsain subdivision of Shimla district in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. It is at an altitude of 2708 meters on the Hindustan-Tibet Road in Himachal Pradesh, India within a fir forest. It is about 65 km away from Shimla and surrounded by the Himalayan RangeOne is constantly treated to a bird's-eye view of the different valleys as the road twists and turns from one spur to another. Especially breathtaking is the view of Narkanda from Fagu, a small village en route.

Again one of those magical places where you learn more about all warriors who have sacrificed their lives for this very motherland INDIA. Beautiful place which has a golf ground, helipad at one end of the ground and army museum. Entry to ground is only allowed to golf club members, other visitors can come visit the museum, buy souvenir's and have refreshments.
Place is surrounded by dense forest, usually silent, you can only hear nature voices, hard to imagine something like this exists within bustling Shimla. Place is closed by 4 or 5 pm, so plan your visit accordingly.

How much truth there is in the story told by your enthusiastic guide about an English girl and a Maharaja is anyone's guess but it does add spice to the small square where two of Shimla's most important roads, Mall Road and The Ridge, meet. Although the square is pleasant enough on a sunny day, there is nothing outstanding; the only buildings, etc of note being the office building of the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (on the front of which there is a board giving information on Shimla's history) and the statue of Lala Lajpat Rai (which has an interesting history all of its own).

Christ Church
#hellohalloween
#thingstodo
Standing at one end of The Ridge, the neo-Gothic Christ Church is an imposing landmark on Shimla's skyline. Built by the British in 1857, its interior is plain in appearance except for some splendid stained-glass windows at the eastern end. Amongst these, the chancel window was designed by Lockwood Kipling, the father of Rudyard Kipling. As you would expect from a church of the British India era there are many plaques and memorials on the walls. Living not far from Tonbridge in Kent, I was amazed to see one memorial honouring Arthur Pearse Howell, a former pupil of Tonbridge School. Another interesting memorial honours Lieutenant-General Sir Gerald de Courcy Morton. Described as "a noble character and a simple gentleman", this is the person who developed the 'dumdum' bullet beloved by big game hunters and thriller writers. If you are anywhere on The Ridge, it is worth entering to have a look at this historic building.

Indian Institute of Advanced Study
#hellohalloween
#thingstodo
The building which is now known as the Indian Institute of Advanced Study was formerly known as Rastrapati Niwas (President's Residency) and, before that, Viceregal Lodge (in the time of British India) when it was the residence of the Viceroy. It was built in the late 1880s and has the hint of a look of a Scottish castle. It stands on Observatiory Hill in Shimla and the, mainly well-kept gardens, are home to Himalaya flora and fauna. Many important conferences were held in the building in the period up to Partition and the building houses a substantial archive of photographs and documents from that time. Some of these photographs are on display and you can see them when you tour the building. These tours, which are held at set times, are guided by knowledgeable volunteers and are well worth joining. Photography inside the building is not allowed. Car parking, toilet and refreshment facilities (Fire Station Cafe).

The Ridge

The Ridge is pedestrianised and runs from Scandal Point to Christ Church and provides excellent views of the surrounding countryside.
Luckily, we happened to be visiting Shimla during the Hindu festival of Karwa Chauth, celebrated by married women who pray for their husband's health, longevity and prosperity. They are able to break their fast when the moon rises, and there was a huge gathering of women in their finest saris on The Ridge after sunset. We had a really enjoyable evening there.

Viceregal Lodge

#familytravel
For me it's the exterior and the gardens that are the highlight of the visit. Whilst the building itself is similar to a lot of architecture in the UK, it's the fact that this was the former seat of government covering 20% of world's population that is astounding and adds to its stature.
The views and the gardens are also interesting.
Unfortunately the indoor tour doesn't live up to the exterior. This Victorian mansion is now home to the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies which means that the tour is restricted to only 4 rooms, the displays are like those from more 'traditional' museums and we couldn't really hear the guide very well since the group was very large.
The on-site shop only really sells books from the institute i.e. the offerings don't really connect with the lodge's history.
It's still worth a visit though.

Jakhu Hanuman Temple

#familytravel
I visited Jakhu Hanuman Temple in July 2025 while shooting for my YouTube channel, Shimla Local Tour. The temple is not only a spiritual hotspot but also a visual treat with its majestic Hanuman statue and breathtaking views of Shimla. The surroundings offered great shots and an authentic glimpse into local culture and devotion. The climb was a bit tiring, but totally worth it for the content and the experience. If you're visiting Shimla or creating content about it, this place is a must-visit!

Kalka - Shimla Railway
#hellohalloween
#naturalwonders
#thingstodo
We took the Himalayan Queen from Kalka to Shimla. It left Kalka on time and reached Shimla exactly on time, with two short halts on the way. We went in early July - the off season due to the rains - and the first class compartment was about 70% occupied. The ticket checker was vigilant and de-boarded a couple of folks who did not have tickets.
The journey itself was pleasant. The first class has more legroom and chairs that are somewhat reclined and broader-backed. There are no luggage racks, but ample space to stow a carry-on or backpack at your feet or on unoccupied seats. No air conditioning - but we did not need it as just opening the windows allowed us to enjoy the cool air outside, and take some nice photographs. While we got seats facing away from the direction of travel, I found it easy enough to occasionally turn around on my seat and take in the views.
Another feature of the first-class compartment is the toilet – small, but clean enough, according to my teenage daughter. To be safe, we had carried some wet wipes, a roll of toilet paper, and a sanitizing spray.
One can get food at the two station stops or at Kalka - but I would not recommend it, for hygiene and taste reasons. We did get some canned soft drinks and a bottle of water. A vendor got onto our coach towards the second half, and we ordered a fresh-cut cucumber seasoned with salt and pepper. That was more tasty than the cooked food we ordered on the way.

We recently visited this cafe which was such a hidden gem. We tried their chilli wontons and paratha and both were fantastic! The wontons were juicy inside and perfectly coated in a spicy chilli sauce. The paratha was crispy and tasty!! What a unique, perfect pairing with the wontons. The cozy ambiance and friendly service made for a great experience as well. Highly recommend this unique and flavorful combination. Bring your friends here to celebrate their birthdays.
