The first British colony in Australia, Sydney, was founded in 1788 at Sydney Cove by Arthur Phillip, commodore of the First Fleet. Situated on a bay in the Tasman Sea, Sydney is built on low hills around Port Jackson. It is home to the Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. The metropolitan area is surrounded by national parks, and contains many bays, rivers and inlets.
The city is home to numerous parks, such as Hyde Park, the Royal Botanical Gardens and national parks. Together with Sydney Harbour, these are major factors in making the city one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
