Kiyotsukyo Gorge is a gorge located in Tokamachi City, Niigata Prefecture, and is counted among Japan's three major canyons. This wooden house was originally a school built in 1958. It has been preserved by the villagers and can still withstand heavy snow. Now, six classrooms have been renovated into guest rooms. There are four rooms for 16 people and two rooms for 8 people, which can accommodate a total of 80 people. All rooms are bunk beds and are separated by gender. Guests can chat and share in this shared space, and they can go to the outdoor terrace to cool off in summer. Staying at Sake Hotel Tamakiya means choosing a travel experience that combines fine wine and hot springs. When we arrived, it was not yet dark, and the tranquility and purity of the town made us feel as if we had stepped into another time and space. Here, there are few foreign tourists, and the hotel seems to be exclusively for us. The hot spring, which is saltier than tears and seawater, is uncomfortable at first, but after getting used to it, it brings a refreshing feeling that seems to instantly open up the Ren and Du meridians. In the lounge, you can enjoy free wine and local sake, health tea and desserts, and the company of massage chairs and magazines, making the time after the bath particularly comfortable. Although the dinner trip to the town was a random choice, we unexpectedly tasted the deliciousness of fresh sashimi. Despite the language barrier, we felt a sense of boundary and warmth in the laughter and eyes of the locals. The public bath in the town provides guests who are not staying in a hot spring hotel with the opportunity to experience the medicinal spring. The daily life and culture of the locals can be seen here. In the bar, the combination of sake and freshly baked pizza, and simple exchanges with locals, make the foreign night no longer lonely.
