Friends, I recently unearthed a gem in Xinjiang! This time in Urumqi, I discovered a hidden treasure, so beautiful that I want to keep it to myself, but I can't let anyone else miss out! Itinerary Day 1: Arrive at Urumqi Diwopu International Airport in the morning, take the airport bus to the hotel to check in, drop off your luggage, and take a break. In the afternoon, take a taxi to the Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar. This place is full of exotic charm, with unique architectural styles, vibrant colors, and a wide variety of specialty goods. It's a great place for taking photos. I recommend spending 3–4 hours here. You can also enjoy various cuisines here in the evening. Day 2: Take the subway to Hongshan Park in the morning. This is a landmark attraction in Urumqi, where you can climb to the top of the mountain and overlook the entire city. Enjoy the breeze at the summit, admire the city and the distant snow-capped mountains. Spend 2–3 hours here. In the afternoon, head to Shuimogou Park, stroll along the meandering river, and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere. You can also see the ancient watermills. I recommend spending about 3 hours here. Day 3: Join a one-day tour group to the Tianshan Grand Canyon. The drive takes about an hour. Their hand-pilaf is a must-try. The mutton is stewed until tender and flavorful, and the sweetness of carrots and onions is infused into the rice. Every bite is distinct and full of local flavor. You must try it! Also, try the special yogurt zongzi. The soft and glutinous zongzi is paired with rich yogurt and honey. It's incredibly satisfying. Accommodation Experience I stayed at the "JI Hotel (Urumqi Hongshan Branch)." The location is excellent, just a few minutes' walk from the subway station, making it very convenient for getting around. The room was clean and tidy, the bed was comfortable, and the soundproofing was good. The front desk service was very welcoming, check-in was quick, and they also provided helpful travel suggestions. It offers excellent value for money. Things to Note You can book tickets for the Tianshan Grand Canyon online in advance to avoid queuing on-site and wasting time. The weather in Urumqi is dry, so remember to moisturize and drink plenty of water. Also, there is a large temperature difference between day and night, so remember to bring a thick coat. Day 0- Arrival in the hotel and just explore the neighborhood you’re in. Try local snacks right away. The lamb skewers taste divine in Xinjiang so please don’t miss this paired with Nang bread . Visit the International Grand Bazaar and have your dinner there. It is so vibrant and you can shop there until you drop. 😊 Day 1- we have booked a tour to the Grand Canyon of Tianshan Mountains. Trip app offers tickets and shuttle bus tickets so just have a look through the app. Your hotel and hostel will have recommendations for tour operators for you anyway. If you are an anxious person, better book in advance but I don’t think they ever run out of tickets coz there aren’t a lot of tourists in Urumqi and it’s scenic spots yet. 7:30 was out call time at the meeting point. No worries, they will contact you in advance for this tour’s instructions. This is pretty much whole day activity so do not book any other stuff on the same day. Day 2- another full day tour. This time , you will go to the most and highly recommended tourist spot in Urumqi which is the Heavenly Lake. This is also a guided tour. Trip app has available offers for this too but then again you can also book through your hostel or hotel. Seriously, Heavenly lake and its surrounding mountain is like a massive painting. It is indeed breathtaking. Anyway, before you reach the heavenly lake, you will stop at a Kazakh village which is really interesting to see. You get to learn how the Kazakh minority live, culture and tradition. You will arrive back to tour hotel in the evening already so depending on your energy level you can go for a cultural show in the international grand bazaar. After passing the Urumqi toll inspection station from the G30 national highway, the right side is the Tianshan mountain range all the way, and the left side is the winding snow mountain all the way. I was a bit disappointed at first, because the snow mountain scenery I wanted to shoot was all on the left side. On a whim, I saw that the ticket for the Tianshan Grand Canyon plus the interval car was only 58 yuan, so I decisively navigated there.
