Utah National Parks (the “Mighty 5”) — spectacular red‑rock scenery, canyons, arches, hoodoos and high desert plateaus. Ideal for hiking, scenic drives, photography and stargazing.
Highlights
- Zion National Park: Zion Canyon, Angels Landing (permit required), The Narrows (river hike), Canyon Overlook.
- Bryce Canyon National Park: amphitheater of hoodoos, Sunrise Point, Navajo Loop, stargazing.
- Arches National Park: Delicate Arch, Windows Section, Devils Garden (trail options).
- Canyonlands National Park: Island in the Sky (Mesa Arch sunrise), Needles (technical hikes), remote backcountry.
- Capitol Reef National Park: Waterpocket Fold, scenic drives (Scenic Drive, Hickman Bridge), orchards in Fruita.
Practical tips
- Best time: Spring (Apr–May) and fall (Sep–Oct) for mild temps and crowds; winter offers snow scenes; summer days are very hot.
- Permits & access: Angels Landing requires timed permit; The Narrows can need permits for long canyon trips; backcountry/backpacking requires permits—check NPS/recreation.gov. Some popular trails may use shuttles (Zion in high season).
- Getting around: Fly to Salt Lake City (SLC) or Las Vegas (LAS) then drive. Distances between parks can be multiple hours—plan logistics and overnight stays. High‑clearance/4WD may be needed for some side roads.
- Reservations & crowds: campgrounds and some lodges fill early—book ahead. Visit popular viewpoints at sunrise/sunset for fewer people and best light.
- Safety: desert conditions—carry lots of water, sun protection, map/GPS, and know flash‑flood risks in slot canyons. Altitude varies (parks 4,000–9,000 ft) — acclimatise if needed. Leave No Trace and stay on trails.
- Wildlife & environment: do not feed wildlife; respect fragile cryptobiotic soils.
- Fuel & supplies: services limited near some parks—fill up and bring food/water.
Essentials
- Time zone: MST/MDT (varies by location/time of year).
- Emergency: 911. Park visitor centers list local contacts.
- Electricity: 120V, Type A/B.
- Permits/fees: park entrance fees apply; check NPS site for current prices and permit rules.
- Health/gear: sunscreen, wide‑brim hat, layered clothing (hot days, cold nights), sturdy hiking shoes, trekking poles for steep/rocky trails, headlamp, first‑aid, plenty of water (2–4 L/day depending on activity).
Sample quick itineraries
- 3–4 days: Zion + Bryce (drive, sunrise/sunset at key viewpoints).
- 4–6 days: Arches + Canyonlands (Island in the Sky) + drive to Capitol Reef.
- 7–10 days: Loop through all five parks with varied hikes and one or two backcountry options.
Packing checklist
- Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, breathable layers, warm jacket for mornings, sturdy boots, hydration system, maps/offline GPS, headlamp, snacks, camera with extra batteries/SD, lightweight daypack, basic repair kit, cash/card for entrance fees.
