Wuyishan National Park

Wuyishan National Park is located in the northern section of the Wuyishan mountain range in northwestern Fujian, stretching across the border area between Fujian and Jiangxi provinces. It is one of China's first established national parks, and Wuyishan itself was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for both culture and nature as early as 1999. The park was formed by integrating the former Wuyishan National Nature Reserve and Wuyishan Scenic Area: the Tongmu area in the north focuses on ecological conservation and scientific research, preserving a rare intact mid-subtropical forest ecosystem at this latitude. The main peak of the Wuyishan range, Mount Huanggang, is also located here, and this core area does not offer regular tourism activities. Sightseeing activities are concentrated in the scenic areas along both banks of the Nine-bend Stream, namely the four major sections: Tianyou Peak to Taoyuan Cave, Nine-bend Stream to Wuyi Palace, One-line Sky to Tiger Roaring Rock, and Dahongpao to Water Curtain Cave. The attractions in the scenic area are relatively scattered with considerable distance between them. A leisurely visit typically requires two to three days. If you only have one day, start by ascending Tianyou Peak for a panoramic view of the emerald waters and crimson mountains along the Nine-bend Stream, then take a bamboo raft downstream from Xingcun Wharf. Along the way, you'll pass landmarks like Jade Maiden Peak, Great King Peak, cliff inscriptions, and suspended boat coffins. The rafting journey ends at Wuyi Palace, making it an ideal classic route. Tea enthusiasts may prefer spending time on the leisurely Rock Bone Floral Trail between Dahongpao and Water Curtain Cave. This gentle path connects core Wuyi rock tea production areas like Liuxiangjian and Huiyuankeng, offering a uniquely fragrant experience. With two days, you can cover all four major sections. For more time, consider visiting the ancient tea merchants' residences in Xiamei Village, the starting point of the ancient Tea Horse Road, or exploring the ruins of the Minyue King's City near Chengcun Village—the latter also being part of Wuyishan's world heritage site. Bamboo rafting is very popular, so please make arrangements in advance during peak season. To get close to the ecological heart of the park, you can take the Wuyishan National Park No. 1 scenic route. Places like Moon Bay and Qinglong Waterfall are suitable for self-drive or private charter. As for food, street snacks like flat meat dumplings and Vietnamese noodles are common, while Langu smoked goose and local dishes cooked with alpine bamboo shoots and mushrooms are also worth trying.Wuyishan · 13.4 km from downtown

Xiamei Ancient Residence

Xiamei Ancient Residence is a well-preserved architectural complex of ancient Ming and Qing dynasty residences. During the Qing Dynasty, Xiamei flourished due to the tea trade. The Dangxi and Meixi streams connected within the village, providing convenient water transport, and ancient streets, wharves, and residences were distributed along the streams, forming a unique ancient village layout and leaving behind historical imprints related to the tea trade. Today, the village still preserves more than 30 ancient Qing dynasty residences. The buildings are scattered along both banks of the Dangxi stream, with blue-tiled flying eaves and fire-blocking walls reflecting in the water, presenting a simple and traditional village style. The ancient buildings within the village, such as the Zou Ancestral Hall, Zou Dafudi Mansion, Xishui Villa, Guixiu Tower, and Fang Shicanjun Mansion, each have their own unique characteristics. Many of these buildings retain exquisite brick, wood, and stone carvings, with detailed decorations on gate towers, window lattices, and brackets, and some halls still feature ancient plaques. Strolling slowly along the Dangxi stream, you can see pavilions, railings, and "beauty's benches" (meirenkao) along the banks, as well as traditional views like ancient streets and wells, with water lanes and ancient houses complementing each other. It is best to slow your pace while visiting to experience the spatial characteristics and historical charm of the ancient village through the architectural details and riverside views.Wuyishan · 9.8 km from downtown

Dahongpao Scenic Spot features the Dahongpao mother trees on the cliffs of Jiulongke and the Wuyi rock tea landscape. Several mother trees grow on the cliff face; they are hundreds of years old and serve as a representative tea culture landmark of the scenic spot. As for the name "Dahongpao," a local legend tells of a scholar who was helped by the tea and, after achieving success in the imperial examinations, draped his red robe over the trees in gratitude, adding a rich cultural layer to the site. The mother trees are no longer harvested for preservation, and visitors can follow the trail to the base of the cliff to view the tea trees and the surrounding rock landscape up close. Records indicate that the six mother trees are located on the steep cliffs of Jiulongke Canyon and have a long history. The trails within the scenic spot wind between Danxia cliffs and tea plantations, with rows of tea trees visible on both sides, offering an immersive look at the growing environment of Wuyi rock tea. Towering peaks and cliffs flank the Jiulongke valley, where rock faces, streams, and tea plantations intertwine to create a mountain tea plantation landscape characteristic of Wuyishan. The scenic spot also features mountain areas and rock peaks such as Liuxiang Stream, Wuyuan Stream, and Niulankeng. You can venture deep into the valley along the "Rock Bone Flower Fragrance" trail to experience the natural environment of the rock tea production area while sightseeing.Wuyishan · 12.3 km from downtown

Wuyishan was one stop on our road trip loop! Before coming, I was quite nervous because of all the travel guides online. Actually, it's the off-season and the crowds aren't that big, so you can plan your time more leisurely! This loop included several mountains. The mountain scenery in Wuyishan isn't particularly special. The scenic area is very large, and you can only get there by shuttle bus. But if you just rush through everything by shuttle bus, it's really not that great. If the temperature is nice, it's nice to walk around and see the tea gardens. This season, the water level is low, and the scenery at several attractions is just so-so, especially the Da Hong Pao and Shui Lian Dong scenic areas at the North Gate. We walked a long way there and it was far below expectations. The good thing is that the Sangu Resort Area is well-planned. It's convenient to take a bus to the South Gate of the scenic area, and it's free.

A trip to Wuyishan involves climbing Tianyou Peak in the morning and cruising the Nine-Bend Stream in the afternoon. Floating on a bamboo raft along the Nine-Bend Stream, the water is crystal clear, a gentle breeze blows, and the raft drifts slowly, while the boatman tells stories of the mountains and rocks… The mountains are covered with tea gardens, the tender buds sprouting vigorously, and the air is filled with the fragrance of tea leaves and flowers, making one feel relaxed and comfortable.

As the core supporting area of Wuyishan Scenic Area, Sangu Resort offers the following comprehensive experiences: Geographic location and transportation Close to Wuyishan Scenic Area, it is within walking distance to major attractions such as Impression Dahongpao Theater and Wuyi Palace. It takes 5 minutes by taxi to reach the south gate of the scenic area or the gate of Wuyi Palace. 12 Convenient transportation, free bus shuttle, but the bamboo raft pier is a little far and needs to transfer to a sightseeing bus. 12 Accommodation experience Hotels and homestays are concentrated, ranging from high-end holiday villas to economy options. Some hotels are within a 5-minute walk from the entrance of the scenic area. 34 It is recommended to choose the Black Swan Family Room for family travel, which has a garden-style design and complete facilities. 4 Hotels in the Old Street area have a strong Zen atmosphere, and some provide tea culture experience.

Located on the banks of the Jiuxi River at an altitude of approximately 400 meters, Tianyou Peak, though lower than Sanyang Peak and Dawang Peak, truly embodies the saying, "A mountain is not high if it is not high, but if a deity dwells there, it becomes sacred." It offers the best panoramic view of the Jiuxi River, making Tianyou Peak an ideal choice if you only plan to climb one mountain in Wuyishan. The 848 steps to the summit of Tianyou Peak begin at the "Tea Cave," surrounded by other peaks, and involve a total ascent of about 200 meters. The entire path to the top is made up of steps, steep and narrow, and prone to congestion during holidays.

The ancient village is similar to other ancient villages, but the difference is that it is the starting point of the ancient tea transport road in history. Merchants who made money in history built many houses here, integrating the styles of Shanxi merchants, Huizhou merchants, and Guangdong merchants. Someone needs to explain it to you, otherwise you won’t understand the history.

To get to Qinglongtan, there's a gate just past Moon Bay. You need to get off the bus, register your information, and then drive into the Qinglongtan Scenic Area parking lot. Inside, there are stairs leading up to the sightseeing bus stop. The ride takes about 10 minutes to Jiulongtan Station. The winding mountain road is quite thrilling. After getting off the bus, walk down the stairs to a beautiful waterfall. The scenery is captivating, like natural air conditioning, refreshing and cool. The two waterfalls offer distinct atmospheres. We visited the day before National Day and it was practically booked out!

A very complete ancient town with very good ancient buildings. It takes half an hour to drive from here in the morning. There is no bullet train, so it is more convenient to drive by yourself. There were not many people when I went there, and the whole ancient town was very quiet. The tofu in the town is delicious.

Take a bus to Da Hong Pao and see that tea tree? As the origin of Da Hong Pao, seeing the tree involves walking up a flight of stairs. These are three mother trees with a history of over 360 years. These three mother trees grew into six trees, which, since harvesting ceased in 2006, have grown freely into large tea trees. The story of Da Hong Pao tells of a scholar who fell ill while passing through Wuyi Mountain. He was cured by monks at a nearby temple using tea leaves as medicine. Later, the scholar achieved the highest rank in the imperial examinations and upon returning home, draped his red robe (symbol of imperial honor) over a tea tree, thus giving the tree its name, Da Hong Pao (Big Red Robe). In fact, the entire Wuyi Mountain scenic area is filled with tea gardens; tea trees line the roads. With good air and water quality, the tea grown here is naturally of excellent quality.
