We will meet at Beverley Meadow Park (What3Words: fuels.tricks.tree) in the southeast corner, near the underpass and railway. This is just a 6-minute walk from Canterbury West Station or 10 minutes from Canterbury's West Gate Towers. From here, we'll begin the tour, heading toward the Diamond Jubilee Orchard before walking uphill into Bluebell Woods, a rare semi-ancient woodland.
Depending on what time of year you choose to do the tour you can expect to see a variety of seasonal changes.
Spring (April–May): A thick carpet of fragrant bluebells blankets the forest floor.
Summer: The orchard is alive with butterflies, bees, and birds.
Autumn: A variety of fascinating fungi emerge
Winter & Early Spring: The woods are peaceful, with rich birdsong echoing through the trees
Throughout the tour, we'll pause to observe nature, listening for bird calls, identifying fungi, and looking for woodland indicator species that reveal this woodlands ancient history. I'll also share insights into how this landscape has evolved over time, exploring its connection to Canterbury's history.
Forest Bathing – A Deep Connection with Nature
A highlight of the experience is a guided Forest Bathing session, also known as Shinrin-Yoku. This Japanese practice encourages deep relaxation and connection with nature, offering both mental and physical health benefits.
During this session, I will introduce the origins and benefits of Forest Bathing. Guiding you through exercises to heighten awareness of the woods, encouraging you to slow down, breathe deeply, and engage with nature.
This is a chance to unplug from technology, reset your mind, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
Tea & Coffee Break
After our Forest Bathing session, we'll pause for a short break, where I'll offer tea, coffee, and optional pastries. This is a great opportunity to reflect on the experience, chat, and take in the scenery.
We'll then make our way back through the Diamond Jubilee Orchard, keeping an eye out for butterflies, bumblebees (in summer), birds, and other wildlife before finishing the tour at Beverley Meadow Park, where we started.
