We visited in November on a weekday. Lesser crowd and the weather was perfect, sunny between 10°C & 15°C. Our tour came with a guide who got us the tickets and planned the hiking routes, covering every "tourist-must-see" parts of the mountain. The buffet lunch recommended by the guide at ¥98/pax up on the mountains is a really good deal too. Huangshan is NO JOKE. The 8km up and down the steps lasted for almost 6 hours, excluding the one-way 20mins shuttle bus ride & one-way 10mins cable car ride. At the end of the tour our legs were not cooperative anymore. Besides the breathtaking views, it was also heartbreaking to see elderly potters carrying approximately 180 catties (about 108kg!) of goods up and down the mountains. They are literally breaking their backs 😭! Some even stopped and asked passers-by for water / food. Would forming a bucket brigade or a human chain be workable?

The tour is led by a local guide who will explain everything simultaneously with the other tour participants via WeChat or another platform that allows for simultaneous communication. Despite the initial language barrier, the tour was incredible. The Huang Mountains are beautiful, and thanks to the tour, we were able to understand the meaning (or even the purpose) of each point of interest—otherwise, without the tour, it would simply be another part of the mountain, nothing more. I highly recommend taking a tour; the experience of sharing it with locals makes it even more unique. Just be prepared to climb stairs.

The itinerary was well-planned, with no backtracking, making it convenient and hassle-free. Driver and guide Mr. Bi provided explanations along the way, answered all questions, and was professional and enthusiastic. He even added a few viewpoints along the route, which was great. If you want to avoid the crowds and explore the northern route of Wuyuan, I recommend this tour!
