Huangguoshu Scenic Area

9
The Huangguoshu Scenic Area is located in Anshun, Guizhou, centered around the Huangguoshu Waterfall. Surrounded by deep gorges, dense vegetation, and dotted with limestone caves and stone forests, it is a typical karst landscape area. The waterfall's name originates from the locally abundant "Huangguoshu" (Ficus virens). Ming Dynasty traveler Xu Xiake visited and documented this site, contributing to its fame. The scenic area primarily consists of three main sections: the Great Waterfall, Tianxing Bridge, and Doupotang. Most travelers follow the sequence of Doupotang, Tianxing Bridge, and finally the Great Waterfall, saving the most spectacular view for last. The grand waterfall has a drop of nearly 80 m and a width of over 100 m. The Baishui River plunges from the cliff top into Rhinoceros Pool, creating a vast mist. Multiple viewing platforms around it allow visitors to experience its grandeur, wonder, steepness, and beauty from different angles—above, below, front, back, left, and right. A particularly unique experience lies behind the waterfall: a 100 m long Water Curtain Cave runs horizontally through its midsection, featuring cave windows and halls. Reaching through a window, one can touch the cascading water. The cave served as the filming location for the Water Curtain Cave in the 1986 TV series Journey to the West. Due to the heavy humidity inside, bringing a raincoat in advance is recommended. Tianxing Bridge is renowned for its harmonious blend of rocks, water, trees, and caves—where rocks rise from the water, caves hide within rocks, and trees stand beside caves. The stepping stones along the path are engraved with dates, allowing travelers to find their own "birthday stone." The attraction is divided into upper and lower sections. Many travelers turn back after completing the upper section, missing the Silver Chain Waterfall in the lower part—where water cascades like silver chains into a funnel-shaped pool, the highlight of Tianxing Bridge. The Doupotang waterfall is located approx. 1 km upstream from the grand waterfall. With a width of over 100 m at its crest, the water spreads out smoothly like a beaded curtain. During the high-water season, its deep roar earns it the nickname "roaring waterfall." The scene of the four pilgrims leading their horse across the river in the 1986 TV series Journey to the West was filmed here. In summer and fall, the waterfalls are full and powerful, while in winter and spring, the flow becomes gentler, offering different viewing experiences. Nearby, visitors can also enjoy local snacks like sticky rice, love tofu, and Anshun spring rolls.Zhenning · 7.1 km from Guanling

The Water Curtain Cave is located at a height of 40 to 47 meters above the Huangguoshu Waterfall, with a total length of 134 meters. The Water Curtain Cave consists of six cave windows, five cave halls, three cave springs and six passages. The main attractions include: upside-down cacti, ancient banyan roots, rattan curtains, pocket gardens, blast holes, crystal palaces, waterfall-touching platforms, etc. When you pass through the Water Curtain Cave, you will also see a wonderful spectacle: you can see the rainbow over the Rhinoceros Pond from each cave window. The rainbow here is not only a colorful double channel, but also dynamic. As long as the weather is clear, you can see it from 9 am to 5 pm, and it changes and moves as you walk. The predecessors said: "The rainbow in the sky is set off by the blue sky, and the rainbow in the Rhinoceros Pond is set off by the snow-white waterfall", so the title is "Snow Reflects the River Clouds". The "Huaguo Mountain" and "Water Curtain Cave" in the TV series "Journey to the West" have left a beautiful and deep impression on Chinese and foreign audiences. It also makes the Huangguoshu Waterfall, the location of the "Water Curtain Cave" filming, more famous and attracts countless tourists to come and see it.Zhenning · 7.1 km from Guanling

Guanling Glacial Potholes

Guanling Glacial Potholes

5.7
Guanling Glacial Potholes are located in the upper valley of the Dabang River, downstream fromHuangguoshu Scenic Area, and are one of the largest and best-preserved glacial pothole clusters in China. The stone pits and hollows scattered across the riverbed are considered remnants left by the impact and grinding of bedrock by Quaternary glacial meltwater approximately 2 to 3 million years ago. The potholes here vary greatly in size, with diameters reaching up to 15m and depths of approx. 10m, while the smallest are only the size of a button. They come in various shapes—some round like a full moon, others resembling gourds, peach hearts, plum blossoms, or melon seeds—and generally exhibit the typical characteristics of a "small mouth, large belly, and flat bottom." The grayish-white pits are embedded in the riverbed, and many contain pools of blue-green water that look like gems scattered across the valley under the sunlight. The glacial pothole cluster retains its primitive appearance, and sightseeing primarily involves hiking along the riverbed. The entire route is approx. 8km long and requires wading through water and climbing over rocks.Guanling · 20.3 km from downtown

Doupotang Waterfall

5.7
Doupotang Waterfall shows two different sides. When White Water River is at its normal level, the water is clear. Doupotang Waterfall flows down slowly, looking like a veil — it was therefore dubbed as a bride's veil. When a rainy season comes, White Water River pours down, carrying sand and soil. It no longer gentle and becomes a strong and forceful wild horse.Guanling · 8.3 km from downtown

Yinlian Zhuitan Waterfall

5.3
Yinlian Zhuitan WaterfallLocated downstream from the Huangguoshu Waterfall, deep within the stone forest on water in the latter half of the Tianxingqiao tour route, this is a sinkhole-type waterfall. It has a drop of approx. 10m to 21m, with a funnel-shaped opening at the top and a trough-like karst pool at the bottom. The water falling into the pool disappears into a sinkhole and then flows into an underground river. The core highlight of the waterfall lies in the form of the water flow: the stone mounds rising along the edge of the pool resemble overlapping, inverted lotus leaves. The water from the Sancha River flows over these leaves and is divided by the travertine beach into countless water lines of varying thickness, spreading out evenly and sliding down slowly. It looks just like thousands of silver chains hanging into the emerald-green deep pool, with a soft and delicate sound that is completely different from the roar of the Huangguoshu Waterfall—"its shape is like a funnel, its sound is like a song, and its appearance is like a chain" perfectly describes this place. Among the Huangguoshu waterfall group, known for its grandeur, this one stands out for its delicate and lively beauty. Yinlian Zhuitan WaterfallLocated in the latter half of the Tianxingqiao area, it requires a considerable walk from the entrance, passing through small karst caves and suspension bridges along the way. During the high-water season, you can see the unique view of the waterfall's flow spreading evenly along the travertine beach, forming thousands of silver water chains falling into the deep pool.Zhenning · 5.7 km from Guanling

I'd heard so much about this scenic spot, and finally made the long journey to see it during the National Day holiday. Even after the rainy season, the water volume was still considerable, especially when you got close, the deafening sound of the water was truly impressive. The panoramic view from Doupotang was also fantastic. It was definitely worth the trip.

The Water Curtain Cave is located at a height of 40 to 47 meters above the Huangguoshu Waterfall. It is 134 meters long and consists of 6 cave windows, 5 cave halls, 3 cave springs and 6 passages. This is the real scene where the 1986 version of "Journey to the West" filmed the scene of Sun Wukong flying into the Water Curtain Cave. The stalactites in the cave are of different shapes. You can also look out through the waterfall curtain from different positions and enjoy the double-track dynamic rainbow on the Rhinoceros Pond, which is very wonderful. Photography suggestions At the viewing platform outside the Water Curtain Cave, you can take a panoramic view of the waterfall. With the waterfall as the background, the characters stand sideways or with their backs to the body, which can capture the artistic conception. Enter the Water Curtain Cave, stand in front of the cave window, let the sunlight pass through the water curtain to form a halo, and take close-ups of the characters. On the iron chain bridge, with the waterfall and green mountains as the background, take pictures of the characters walking across the bridge to add dynamics.

This praise is not for flying over Huangguoshu, but for the night tour of Doupotang. It is really interesting. The large-scale NPC situational drama, the actors are very dedicated, the performance is very good, and the interaction is also very good. The situational drama of the three white-bone spirits is very good. I almost cried when I saw Sun Wukong's final monologue. The design along the way is also very good. The Bull Demon King is also very cute, hahahahahaha! After the performance of Nezha, I saw that the children were taking pictures and performed it again. It was great! And the actress who played the white-bone spirit as a farmer's daughter is really beautiful😊😊😊!!!

### Review of Guanling Glacial Potholes Amidst the towering mountains of Anshun, Guizhou, the Guanling Glacial Potholes unfold a natural epic spanning millions of years with their pristine and awe-inspiring geological wonders. This is not a traditionally meticulously crafted scenic area, but rather a wild display of power, time, and evolution; each landscape tells a story of Earth's ancient past. #### A Geological Marvel Crafted by Nature The core charm of the Guanling Glacial Potholes lies in their geological value as a rare ancient glacial relic. Millions of years ago, massive glacial meltwater, carrying ice fragments, relentlessly and powerfully pounded and ground the bedrock beneath, ultimately shaping this cluster of "stone potholes" scattered across the riverbed. These potholes vary in shape and size, from delicate buttons to grand round tables, and even rare forms like perfect U-shaped bends or hearts. On the inner walls, spiral patterns and parallel scratches are clearly visible, like codes etched by nature, silently telling the story of the immense power of the glaciers flowing through the earth. Walking among them is like stepping into an open-air geological museum, each stone a history book recording Earth's climate change. #### A Visual Illusion Like an Alien Walking on the riverbed of the Guanling glacial potholes creates a strong sense of temporal and spatial displacement, as if instantly transported back to the distant Ice Age, or even to the surface of some unknown alien planet. Countless gray, white, and brown stones are exposed, their surfaces etched with unique textures by long-term weathering, contrasting sharply with the surrounding clear, emerald-green river water. Especially during the dry season, when the river overflows part of the riverbed, leaving only strangely shaped stone eggs and hollows above the surface, adding to the mystery. Under the sunlight, the water meanders between the stone potholes, forming pools of varying depths and emerald green hues, like pearls scattered on a jade plate. Looking up at the cliff face, the water cascades down into waterfalls, the contours of the rocks carved out resembling ancient beasts wrestling and frolicking in the rapids—a lifelike sight that inspires awe at the wonders of nature's imagination. #### A Wild and Primitive Exploration Path The allure of the Guanling Glacial Potholes largely stems from their undeveloped, pristine state. There are no paved paths or safety railings; hiking through them is a challenging adventure in itself. The routes are mostly unpaved, requiring careful traversal of uneven, slippery rocks, each step testing balance and patience. It is precisely because of this that the scenery retains its purest, wildest beauty. However, this pristine state also comes with risks: seemingly shallow pools in the riverbed may actually be bottomless; furthermore, a power station upstream can release water at any time, causing unpredictable water levels. Therefore, this place is more suitable for explorers who seek the ultimate scenery, have some outdoor experience, and prioritize safety. It is not a park for leisurely strolls, but a geological pilgrimage that requires reverence for nature and full immersion.

Tour route: Recommend the lower half of the Tianxing Bridge route, where the highlights are concentrated 3. Best time: The flood season (June-August) is the most spectacular, and rainbows are easy to see on sunny afternoons 4.
