The Elephant Hill Scenic Area is located in the heart of Guilin, at the confluence of the Li River and the Peach Blossom River. It derives its name from its resemblance to a giant elephant stretching its trunk to drink from the sweet waters of the Li River. In his work "Records of Elephant Hill," Shu Shu, a Qing Dynasty official from the Ministry of Works, wrote: "The marvels of Guangxi lie in its mountains; the marvels of Guangxi's mountains lie in their rocks, and the elephant-shaped hill facing the provincial capital is the most marvelous of all." With its lifelike form, the attraction captivates visitors and stands as a quintessential representation of Guilin's landscape. In 1995, it was designated as the city emblem of Guilin. The main attractions in the scenic area include: Elephant Hill and Water Moon, Puxian Pagoda, Elephant Hill Scenic Area and Guilin Sanhua Liquor, Elephant Hill Scenic Area - Love Island, and Elephant Hill Scenic Area - Yunfeng Temple Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Exhibition Hall. Elephant trunk hill and water moon cave "Elephant trunk hill and water moon" is a spectacular wonder here, as described in the poem by Ji Bei Hermit of the Song Dynasty.Harmony of water, moon and caveThe poem reads: "The moon is beneath the water, the moon floats upon the water. The water flows but the moon stays, the moon departs yet the water still flows." On a moonlit night, visiting the Water Moon Cave at the Elephant Trunk Hill attraction presents a magical scene where the moon in the sky, the cave, and the water reflect each other beautifully. Inside the cave, you can find the "Poem and Preface of the Morning Sun Pavilion" by Zhang Xiaoxiang from the Song Dynasty and works by Fan Chengda.Inscription on the water and moon caveAnd over 50 precious cliff carvings including Lu You's poetry manuscripts. Xiangshan scenic area - Puxian pagoda Winding up along the rocky cliffs, you can see the Puxian pagoda standing tall amidst the greenery from afar. Built during the Ming dynasty, this 13.6m-high solid brick lama-style pagoda has a history of over 400 years. On the northern side of the pagoda, there is a line-engraved bluestone statue of a bodhisattva, with the mantra "Namo Puxian Bodhisattva" inscribed above it, hence the name Puxian pagoda in the Xiangshan attraction. Buddhist scriptures record that Puxian bodhisattva's mount is a six-tusked white elephant, making the pagoda's location atop Xiangshan mountain a perfect embodiment of this scripture. Elephant Hill Scenic Area and Guilin Sanhua liquor This is a natural wine cellar, with two-thirds of the mountain being hollow. It stays warm in winter and cool in summer, maintaining a constant temperature of 19°C and humidity above 90% year-round. Since the Song Dynasty, it has served as an official cellar for storing Sanhua wine. Sanhua wine is colorless and transparent, with a fragrant yet spicy taste. It drawsLi RiverWith the essence of the mountains and the soul of the Li River, it has become a representative of China's rice-aroma liquor. The cellar liquor was designated as a tribute to the imperial court as early as the Northern Song Dynasty and is one of the three treasures of Guilin. To date, nearly a thousand tons of liquor are stored in the caves. Love island Love island is located on the north side of the attraction, adjacent toLi RiverIt is another scenic viewpoint for distant viewing. The island boasts a beautiful environment and lush vegetation, making it a popular dating spot for locals in the 1970s, hence the name "love island". The Huajiang Canyon Bridge stands 625 m vertically above the river surface, serving as a benchmark cultural tourism landmark where Guizhou's super project deeply integrates with karst natural wonders. Leveraging the high bridge resources, the service area has created a mountain tourism destination combining high-altitude immersive sightseeing, bridge engineering education, and karst geological exploration. From a 625-meter cloud perspective, it unlocks the dual awe of China's bridge construction marvels and the canyon's hidden wonders. 1. Cloud ladder·fully transparent sightseeing elevator in bridge tower: Located in the south bridge tower (Zhenfeng side), it is a rare fully transparent sightseeing elevator built inside a high bridge tower in China. The elevator climbs steadily at a speed of 4 m per second, taking only 24 seconds to reach the second floor of the bridge tower approx. 625 m above the river. The fully transparent glass cabin provides an unobstructed vertical view. During the ascent, the lush vegetation at the valley bottom, the winding river in the canyon, the steel trusses of the bridge deck, and the towering structure at the tower top unfold layer by layer before your eyes. With a 100-meter abyss beneath your feet, the entire journey immerses you in the visual impact of soaring through the air. It is not only a popular "cloud ladder" check-in spot in the service area but also a step-by-step high-altitude experience. 2. Sky spine·box girder built-in sightseeing hall: A high-altitude view corridor built within the main box girder of the bridge, standing 625 m above the river surface, creating a unique sightseeing space inside the bridge. Walking through the "steel spine" of the bridge, one side features the intricate and robust steel truss structure, allowing close observation of suspension bridge components and appreciation of large-scale engineering wisdom. The other side offers panoramic windows to overlook the majestic Huajiang Grand Canyon, with rolling karst peaks and the river winding like an emerald ribbon through the mountains. The corridor also features bridge science exhibition points, providing an easy-to-understand guide on the construction process and technological breakthroughs of Guizhou's high bridges, combining sightseeing with educational insights. 3. Cloud walk·high-altitude glass hall: Located in the middle section of the box girder corridor, 625 m above the river surface, it is constructed with high-strength special laminated glass. Standing on the transparent glass floor, you can directly overlook the vast canyon abyss, with the Beipanjiang River valley and karst peak forest in full view. When clouds drift in, it feels like floating in a sea of clouds. The hall features a check-in observation deck, cultural and creative exhibition area, and high bridge post office, combining sightseeing, photography, and leisure experiences. It is the most iconic viral photo spot in the entire attraction. 4. Super project·Bridge wonder: The Huajiang Canyon Bridge itself is the core attraction of the service area, and it is also a prominent steel-truss suspension bridge with a remarkable span in China's mountainous regions. The two main towers stand on both sides of the canyon, with a km main span soaring across the sky. The two main cables bear a tensile force of tens of thousands of tons, showcasing the grandeur of a major national project. Whether viewed from afar or up close, one can feel the awe-inspiring transformation of "a natural chasm into a thoroughfare." It is a highly representative landmark in Guizhou's "Bridge Museum" and a recommended destination for engineering and photography enthusiasts.China · Zhenfeng

Baili Azalea Scenic Area

The Baili Azalea Scenic Area is located in the central part of Bijie City, Guizhou, at the border of Dafang and Qianxi. It is a natural wild azalea forest belt, named for its hundred-mile stretch of blooming flowers. Around mid-March each year, azaleas of various colors bloom sequentially from low to high altitudes, with the flowering period typically lasting until late April. The exact dates vary depending on the year's temperature. The peak bloom period is relatively short, so to catch the spectacular sight of flowers covering the mountains, it's best to monitor the bloom status and plan your visit accordingly. The wild azaleas in the forest include dozens of species such as rhododendron delavayi, rhododendron irroratum, and rhododendron anthosphaerum. When in bloom, the red flowers resemble flames, the pink ones resemble rosy clouds, and shades of purple and white intermingle. A unique feature is "different flowers on the same tree"—a single tree can produce blooms of varying shades. This phenomenon is commonly seen in the Pudi and Jinpo scenic areas, as well as the Huangping "Ten-Mile Azalea" zone. The "Azalea King," a thousand-year-old tree with tens of thousands of blossoms, is a must-see for many travelers. The Jinpo area, at a lower altitude, blooms slightly earlier, while Pudi blooms a bit later. If time permits, visiting both areas ensures you don't miss the full spectacle. The region is also home to the Yi and Miao ethnic groups, and the flower season often coincides with traditional festivals like the Yi Flower-Inserting Festival and the Miao Flower-Dancing Festival. The vibrant ethnic costumes and dances complement the floral landscape beautifully. The scenic area is distributed in a belt-like pattern, with some distance between sections, so planning your route in advance is advisable. Even if you miss the blooming season, the Baili Azalea Scenic Area remains pleasantly cool in summer, with its forests, grasslands, and river valleys offering a refreshing retreat.China · Dafang

It is a very remote place, 40 minutes away from the bus of Huangping County. Most tourists drive there by themselves. Because, from the bus to the intersection, you have to walk one kilometer. How can there be such a beautiful scenery in such a remote place? I can't figure it out! I searched and found that this place was the main traffic route from the Central Plains to Myanmar🇲🇲 through Guizhou and Yunnan, as well as the post station. Such a beautiful and exquisite classical garden has been preserved. Guizhou officials from all dynasties have left their footprints and calligraphy here. It is really worth a visit. It is not in the same direction as the Jiuzhou Ancient Town in Huangping County, but it is a long way from the north. The bus next to the bus station in Huangping County runs once an hour. It is really difficult for me to travel alone. There are similar national key cultural relics protection units around, and 5A attractions are better than nothing.

Overall, it was alright. Climbing up the mountain was quite tiring; the whole trip took about 3 hours. The path was quiet with few people, but the signs weren't very clear. We ended up on a set of steps without railings (we weren't sure if we were on the right path, because the people behind us disappeared, and we didn't know which way they went). I think this was a pleasant surprise for adventurous people, but a little unsafe for those who aren't. The descent was another pleasant surprise; we entered an ancient alleyway with many Ming and Qing dynasty courtyards (I had thought the ancient city was just the outer streets and riverbanks). Don't forget these ancient alleyways when you visit the ancient city!

When visiting Guilin, a must-see is Elephant Trunk Hill, the city's iconic landmark. It truly lives up to its reputation as the face of Guilin's landscape; only by seeing it in person can one truly appreciate the wonders of nature. The entire mountain sits on the banks of the Li River, resembling a giant elephant bowing to drink from the water. The Water Moon Cave cuts through the mountain, its reflection shimmering in the water, creating the famous Elephant Trunk Hill and Water Moon spectacle—a flowing ink painting. The scenic area is clean and comfortable, with walking paths built along the Li River, shaded by lush trees, making for a delightful stroll. You can climb the mountain for panoramic views of Guilin, or find classic vantage points along the riverbank to capture stunning, atmospheric photos. Boat trips are also available, offering a different and breathtaking perspective of Elephant Trunk Hill from the river. The scenic area is conveniently located in the city center, with excellent transportation and comprehensive facilities. Every step reveals a new vista, allowing you to truly experience the unparalleled beauty of Guilin's landscape. Don't miss it when traveling to Guilin; it's definitely worth a visit.

A regular ticket is sufficient, as you'll find that there's simply not enough time to visit the paid attractions if you go at midday. Also, you must bring a film camera next to the Fast sign. It must be a battery-free film camera with manual metering. If possible, bring your own film, as film cameras at the attraction aren't cheap—300 yuan for 36 exposures.

Fenghuang Ancient Town, located in Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Hunan Province, is a border town renowned for its literary significance. A national 5A-level tourist attraction, it was praised by New Zealand writer Rewi Alley as "China's most beautiful small town." The Tuojiang River flows gently through the town, with stilted houses standing along its banks and winding ancient cobblestone alleys. This is the spiritual home of Shen Congwen's novel "Border Town," harboring unique Xiangxi charm. In the morning, a thin mist blankets the river; at night, lights reflect on the water. The landscape and culture blend seamlessly, half poetic, half down-to-earth; every step reveals the gentle warmth of time. #TravelRecommendationOfficer #HealingScenery #FenghuangAncientTown #XiangxiTourism
