Gongtan Old Town once lay at the confluence of Apeng River and Wujiang River in Youyang County. At one time many of the town's residents had the surname "Gong," hence the town's name. Due to construction of a dam, the original old town was disassembled and relocated. The rebuilt old town still retains its distinctive fire seal walls, simple courtyards, and pile-supported houses. Most of its residents are local indigenous people. The old town has a stone paved street that connects all the old buildings in the town. The old town isn't very large, and can be explored in two or three hours. When you're worn out from strolling around the streets, visit the old street. Many of the old town's delicacies can be found here, including fragrant mushroom balls, fried mountain fern, pig's trotters with radish, cool tofu, and jellied tofu.Youyang County · 41.4 km from downtown

The Youyang Peach Blossom Spring Scenic Spot is located near Shuyang County. It is mainly composed of the Peach Blossom Spring, Fuxi Cave and Youyang Ancient Town. According to research, Tao Yuanming wrote his famous "Arcadia" in this very spot. If you come here in April, you can have a taste of the scenery that inspired the famous poem. In April, the entrance to the scenic spot is filled with peach blossoms, as the Taohua River flows out of the cave. If you look into the cave you can see the beautiful hanging stalactites. There are many stone carvings in the cave, but they are difficult to identify because of their age.Youyang County · 2.3 km from downtown

Gongtan Ancient Town Wujiang Gallery is located at the confluence of the Wujiang River and the Apeng River in Youyang County, Chongqing, facing Yanhe in Guizhou across the river. It is the starting point of the "Thousand-mile Wujiang, Hundred-mile Gallery" and an old riverside town with a history dating back to the Shu Han period, about 1,800 years ago. During the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty, a rockfall from Fenghuang Mountain created a dangerous shoal in the river that blocked navigation. Goods in transit had to be unloaded and transferred here, leading porters and trackers to gather and form a market, followed by the rise of salt shops and businesses. Today, the old bluestone street stretches along the river, with a cluster of Tujia stilt houses extending for about 2 km along the riverside, their wooden pillars and upturned eaves hanging over the cliff; the old street connects old residences and temples such as the Ran Family Courtyard, Xiqin Guild Hall, Chuanzhu Temple, and Dong Family Ancestral Hall. Among them, the Xiqin Guild Hall, built by Shaanxi salt merchants in the Qing Dynasty, features towering red walls and an interior stage, known locally as the "Red Temple." The Ran Family Courtyard, said to be the residence of the Ran chieftain, dates back about 300 years and blends Hui-style courtyards with local post-and-beam structures. Tours can be divided into land and water routes: on land, you can stroll along the old street to see the Yongding Chenggui Stele, the "Bridge over Bridge," and various old courtyards. Teachers and students can be seen setting up easels to sketch in the town all year round. There is also the Wu Guanzhong Memorial Hall and the Gongtan Art Museum; Wu Guanzhong painted "Wujiang Families" here back in the day; for the water route, take a cruise from the ancient town pier into the Wujiang Gallery, a round trip of about 40 minutes. The clear water winds through cliffs that look like they were split by an axe. On foggy mornings, the river surface is partially hidden, while in the evening, you can walk along the riverside path to watch the sunset silhouette the stilt houses. When tired from walking, sit in a small shop on the old street for a bowl of Tujia mung bean noodles, or order a pot of Wujiang Jiao Jiao fish hot pot. During festivals, there are often bonfires for the Tujia Baishou Dance in the small square. Before traveling in the rainy season, pay attention to the Wujiang River water level to avoid cruise cancellations that might affect your itinerary.Youyang County · 41.4 km from downtown

The Dieshi Flower Valley Attraction is a Dieshi Art Theme Park and Wu Nuo Culture Exhibition Park. The Attraction is located in Banxi Town, Youyang County, spanning two administrative villages, Shanshuwan Village and Zhaying Village. It is close to the G65 Baomao Expressway and only a 5-minute drive from the Banxi exit of the Chongqing-Xiang Expressway. The Dieshi Flower Valley Attraction covers a total area of more than 3,000 acres, in the shape of a "one", from north to south, divided into the Dieshi Flower Valley Area and the Chinese Rural Art Park. The Stacked Stone Flower Valley is a combination of stacked stone layers, stacked stone art and Wu Nuo culture. The stacked stone layers were produced in the Cambrian period about 500 million years ago, and the "female culture" was produced in the early stage of the formation of human primitive religion, with a history of about 10,000 years. The Stacked Stone Flower Valley is mainly based on experience and interaction. There are the Twelve-month God Pillar Stone Formation, Stacked Stone Magic Pit, Canyon Slide Scenic Area, Three Emperors Platform, Wu Nuo Altar Site, Twenty-four Playing God Bonfire Platform, etc. It is a clever combination of Chinese primitive culture and romanticism, and it is also a channel for us to travel from modern society through the mysterious artistic conception of 30 degrees north latitude. There are a large number of lotus flowers on the stones, the mysterious Tujia Wu Nuo totem culture, and romantic fields of pink daisy flowers. Being here, you can feel the traces of the flow of time, listen to the voice of art, overlooking the mysterious and ancient sculptures, stone formations and Cambrian stone flowers, as well as the ingenious art installations, and feel the fierce collision between ancient craftsmen and modern wisdom, and the unexpected encounter between traditional humanities and modern civilization. It is a good place to check in and take photos in the Attraction.Youyang County · 14.4 km from downtown

The Red Stone Forest is located on a vast red stone ridge between Qiangqiang Village, Mawang Town, Youyang Autonomous County, and Youshuihe Town in the hinterland of Wuling Mountain in southeastern Chongqing. It is a 470-530 million-year-old Cambrian-Ordovician sedimentary carbonate rock. After crustal movement, differentiation, leaching, and dissolution, it formed a red karst karst landform and a cliff canyon. It has a myriad of forms, unique appearance, elegant connotation, and stubborn exterior; it is breathtaking. Step into the Red Stone Forest. It's like walking into a magical and dreamy world! The magical fossils of the Red Stone Forest and the peculiar appearance of the stone forest make the viewer curious and eager to explore the ancient world. The ancient town of Longtan, more than 30 kilometers east of Youyang County, was founded in the first year of Qianlong in the Qing Dynasty (1736) and was established as a town in 1935. With the convenience of Longtan River and Youshui River, it used to be an important commercial market town, and there is a saying that "Longtan goods and Gongtan money". During the Anti-Japanese War, Longtan Ancient Town became the rear of the war, and 80,000 people gathered in the 1.5-square-kilometer town, making Longtan Ancient Town famous all over the country and known as "Little Nanjing". The 400-year-old slate old street and courtyard in the ancient town. The Fire Wall is its unique building. The walls of the town are made of fire bricks, ranging in height from ten to twenty or thirty meters, and then built with iron or wood to form a wedge wall about 1 meter high, and houses are built inside. The main street is about 5 meters wide, and it is all paved with square bluestone. Because it has not been around for a long time, the slate is very smooth after pedestrians have walked on it, and you need to be extra careful when walking. The ancient buildings in the ancient town are distributed in a long shape from the south to the north river, and many of the houses along the steps are made of fine diamond strips. Famous ancient buildings include Yuwang Palace and Wanshou Palace.Youyang County · 21.8 km from downtown

Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park is named after the natural wonder "Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park - Tianmen Cave." When visiting the attraction, you can enjoy a bird's-eye view of the winding Heaven-Linking Avenue and the stunning mountain scenery from the cable car. The brave can also walk along the cliff-hugging glass skywalk for an exhilarating aerial experience. Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park is located close to Zhangjiajie city. The Tianmen Cave in the park is a natural karst cave, and locals believe it leads directly to heaven. For ordinary travelers, Tianmen Cave is not open year-round. During winter each year, due to snow and icy roads, both Tianmen Cave and the Avenue toward Heaven (a winding mountain road with 99 turns) leading to it are closed. The lower station of the attraction's cableway is located in Guanliping, Yongding District, and the upper station isTianmen MountainTop. In 2020, the attraction opened the express cableway. The lower station of the express cableway is near the entrance to Tianmen Mountain, and the upper station is atTianmen CaveNear the parking lot. Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park is filled with ancient towering trees and intertwined vines. The attraction is divided into several main areas, including Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park - Tianmen Cave, central route, eastern route and western route. Travelers can choose different routes and areas to explore based on their preferences and physical condition. The core attraction along the central route is Tianmen Mountain Temple. Nearby lies the "Child-seeking cave," where folk legends claim Guanyin, the child-giving bodhisattva, manifested her divine power—devout prayers here are believed to grant offspring. The western route's highlight is a 60 m-long glass walkway clinging to sheer cliffs, with fully transparent flooring that induces both vertigo and exhilaration as visitors tread above abysses. Currently, the eastern route and Panlong Cliff each feature their own approx. 60 m glass walkways. No stay is allowed in the attraction, so it can only be visited within one day. There is a "Cherry Bay Restaurant" near Tianmen Mountain Temple, which offers snacks and fast food. Near the lower station of Tianmen Mountain cableway, there is transportation to the "Grand Canyon Theater", where you can watch the live show and magical musical "Tianmen Fox Fairy". Adapted from the mythological tale "Liu Hai cuts firewood", it tells a touching love story between a human and a fox. With live music, lighting effects, and captivating scenes like a giant moon, fox spirit transformations, snowflakes filling the sky, and high-altitude flying bridges, this legendary romance is vividly brought to life.China · Zhangjiajie

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is where Zhangjiajie tourism originates. "Everyone knows Zhangjiajie, but who recognizes Wulingyuan?" Many visitors are confused about the relationship between Zhangjiajie and Wulingyuan. Generally, Zhangjiajie refers to both Zhangjiajie City and the Zhangjiajie attraction. The Zhangjiajie attraction specifically means Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, which—together with Tianzi Mountain, Suoxi Valley, and Yangjiajie—forms the Wulingyuan scenic area. Since Zhangjiajie National Forest Park was developed earlier and gained greater fame, even Zhangjiajie City was renamed after it. As a result, people commonly use "Zhangjiajie National Forest Park" or "Zhangjiajie attraction" to refer to the Wulingyuan scenic area. "Three thousand spectacular peaks and eight hundred beautiful waters." The three thousand spectacular peaks, in particular, are world-renowned. Wulingyuan's mountains stand apart from famous peaks around the world. Across its 398-square-kilometer area, over 3,000 densely packed sandstone pillars rise dramatically, with 243 exceeding 1,000 meters in height. When sea of clouds roll in, these pillars appear to float without foundation, soaring straight into the sky. Alongside North America's redwood forests and Greenland's glaciers, they form one of Earth's four great geological wonders. Located at low altitudes in the subtropical zone, Wulingyuan thrives with lush forests and abundant water sources, supporting numerous endangered plant and animal species. Each pillar teems with life. The natural pillars, bridges, canyons, waterfalls, streams, pools, caves, and dense broadleaf forests often shroud in mist and clouds, enhancing their breathtaking beauty. This unique landscape creates a spectacular scene described as "majestic mountains, elegant waters, peculiar peaks, secluded gorges, and exquisite caves," earning its reputation as "an enlarged bonsai and a miniature fairyland." On December 14, 1992, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee unanimously voted to include Wulingyuan on the World Heritage List, filling China's gap of having no World Natural Heritage sites. Its recognized outstanding universal value lies in its exceptionally rare quartz sandstone peak forest landform, which possesses extremely high aesthetic value. UNESCO states: "Wulingyuan's scenery can be compared to several national parks and monuments in the United States, such as the Grand Canyon, as well as the sandstone peaks of Western Australia's Purnululu region. However, due to Wulingyuan's lower elevation and subtropical location, it boasts lush forests, abundant water sources, and numerous towering peaks that display more vertical profiles than the heritage sites in the U.S. and Australia." The visually stunning Pandora planet in the globally popular 2009 movie "Avatar" captivated countless viewers, with its floating mountains inspired by Wulingyuan. Additionally, Wulingyuan served as the filming location for Chinese literary classics like "Dream of the Red Chamber" and "Journey to the West," as well as movies such as "Zhong Kui: Snow Girl and the Dark Crystal" and "Monster Hunt." In 2010, Wulingyuan's unique landform was officially named the "Zhangjiajie landform," becoming a globally recognized term and one of the few landform types in the world named after a specific region. Attraction highlights Yuanjiajie: Step into Pandora from Avatar Yuanjiajie served as the filming location for the "Hallelujah Mountains" in the movie Avatar. Here, you can explore the magical world of floating peaks scattered like stars across the landscape. If you're lucky enough to visit during a light rain or just after the rain clears, you'll witness the breathtaking scenery of mist-shrouded, layered mountain peaks. Mihun Terrace is the ideal vantage point, offering panoramic views of hundreds of towering stone peaks that create a majestic atmosphere. You can also see the renowned "World's First Bridge," a natural wonder spanning two mountains with a vertical drop of 357 meters. Tianzi Mountain: Where the Emperor's Return Makes Other Mountains Pale in Comparison Exploring Tianzi Mountain, you'll encounter extraordinary geological formations and peculiar peaks like the Imperial Writing Brush, Fairy Presenting Flowers, Commander's Platform, Sky-High Farmland, and Immortal Bridge. Don't focus too much on how closely these natural shapes resemble their names - the true charm lies in the mountain's "primordial natural beauty." The misty atmosphere after rainfall creates an ethereal fairyland experience, while winter transforms the landscape into an even more enchanting silver wonderland. Huangshi Village: Reach the summit for breathtaking mountain views "Without ascending Huangshi Village, your trip to Zhangjiajie is incomplete." Huangshi Village is a scenic viewpoint within Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, surrounded by sheer cliffs and lush greenery, with its summit often shrouded in mist. Reaching the top of Huangshi Village offers panoramic views that let you experience the majestic feeling of "seeing all other mountains appear small." Yangjiajie: Thrills Amidst the Peaks Yangjiajie is primarily known for its pristine natural beauty, featuring towering mountains and narrow paths that make it famous for its "perilous" reputation, beloved by backpackers and adventurers. Within the attraction, Black Dragon Village is one of Zhangjiajie's most magical spots. Once inhabited by bandits from western Hunan, it was later renamed after the TV series "The Suppression of Bandits in Black Dragon Mountain." The village is built along the mountainside, with only one path leading up and down—requiring visitors to use both hands and feet to climb to the summit. Suoxi Valley: Nature's Ink Wash Masterpiece Suoxi Valley, also known as Suoxi, gets its name from the rope-like shape of its winding streams. Unlike the more rugged areas of the forest park, this mist-shrouded valley features crystal-clear streams that flow year-round, surrounded by graceful peaks at every turn. The Ten Mile Gallery stands as the crown jewel of Suoxi Valley—a 5km-long canyon filled with fragrant wildflowers and extraordinary rock formations. Walking through this landscape feels like stepping into a living Chinese landscape painting. Golden Whip Stream: Filming Location of "Journey to the West" Golden Whip Stream Canyon is the earliest developed area in the attraction, where a crystal-clear stream flows through the valley flanked by towering peaks and lush greenery. This location served as one of the filming sites for the classic TV series "Journey to the West," allowing fans to visit iconic scenes like the Water Curtain Cave and the Mountain-Splitting Rescue.China · Zhangjiajie

Fanjing Mountain

Fanjing Mountain is located in Tongren, northeastern Guizhou province, with an elevation of 2,572 m. As the highest peak of the Wuling Mountains, it is a member of the UNESCO "Man and Biosphere" program, a World Natural Heritage site, and a national 5A-level tourist attraction. The Mount Fanjing Biosphere Reserve covers a total area of 428.63 km². The mountain is characterized by its pristine wilderness, majestic peaks, layered ridges, crisscrossing streams, and cascading waterfalls. Its iconic attractions include the Red Clouds Golden Summit, Yuejing Mountain, the 10,000-meter Sleeping Buddha, Mushroom Rock, the Ten Thousand Scrolls of Scriptures, Jiulong Pool, and Phoenix Mountain. Mount fanjing was originally named "three valleys", derived from "pure land of brahma". The buddhism here originated in the tang dynasty and flourished in the ming dynasty, making it a historic buddhist mountain. Additionally, mount fanjing boasts abundant wildlife resources, including rare species such as the guizhou golden monkey and dove tree. Mount Fanjing is the main peak of the Wuling mountain range, located at the junction of Jiangkou, Yinjiang, and Songtao counties. With its massive and majestic form reaching into the clouds, it was revered as the ancestor of famous mountains as early as the beginning of the Ming dynasty and is a renowned Buddhist sacred site. Additionally, Mount Fanjing boasts vast areas for viewing red leaves. Every fall, the layered forests are dyed in vibrant hues, with the red leaves complementing the mountain temples. Here, you can take a cable car to overlook the endless stretches of red foliage or stroll along the mountain paths, surrounded by fiery red leaves on both sides and above. The red cloud golden summit is the core of Foshan. The two temples standing majestically on the peak, with two buddhas presiding, create an infinite dharma realm. This masterpiece of the Southern Song Dynasty's White Lotus Society in constructing a "pure land on earth" is a miracle in the history of Buddhist development on famous mountains. Take the sightseeing bus from the attraction entrance to the cableway, then ride the cableway up and walk straight to the top to see the famous "mushroom stone." True to its name, it has a large top and a small base, resembling a mushroom, standing approx. 10 m tall and having been on the mountain for 1 billion years. To the left of the mountaintop is the red golden cloud summit, and to the right is the old golden summit, both incredibly spectacular.China · Jiangkou

This is a stunningly beautiful scenic area with fresh air and swirling mists, like stepping into a fairyland! Electric carts are available for rent within the area, so you won't feel tired even after exploring the entire area. Although you need to drive to get there, it's worth it. There aren't many tourists, and the suspension bridge is practically empty, allowing you to freely take photos.

Quieter than Fenghuang, more rustic than Lijiang, Gongtan Ancient Town is a hidden paradise nestled deep in the mountains 🌿. Perched atop the cliffs of the Wujiang River, its thousand-year-old stilted houses are scattered along the riverbank, their ancient cobblestone streets polished smooth and lustrous by time. Without the clamor of neon-lit bars or the throngs of people, it retains the most authentic charm of a Tujia ancient town. Strolling through the alleys, watching the clear river flow gently, the entire ancient town transforms into a traditional Chinese ink painting when the river mist rises. Sit on a riverside bench, listen to the roar of the Wujiang River, and feel the slow pace of life. This is the Tang and Song Dynasty town described by Wu Guanzhong, far from the hustle and bustle, where only mountains, water, and the warmth of human life remain—perfect for daydreaming and letting your mind wander. #GongtanAncientTown #OffTheBeatenPathTravelDestination #HealingScenery #TheMostBeautifulSceneryOnTheRoad #TravelDiary #ChongqingYouyang #WujiangGallery #StiltedHouseAncientTown

Youzhou Ancient City is all newly built, and most of the accommodation is provided. If you visit Taigu Cave in Youyang Peach Blossom Spring, you must pass through the road to return to the scenic area. It is about 2 kilometers away. You can choose to take a sightseeing bus for 2 yuan to return to the entrance of the scenic area. (1) Youyang Peach Blossom Spring, in fact, the scenic area has little to do with peach blossoms. It just borrowed the poem "Peach Blossom Spring", so there is no need to wait until the peach blossom season. I went in at 8 o'clock and came out at 14 o'clock. Including the Taigu Cave, I played for 6 hours and walked 10 kilometers. (2) If you don't go to Taigu Cave, you can go around (not back) and return to the entrance of the scenic area (Peach Blossom Spring Square). If you go to Taigu Cave, you will have another exit. You need to take a minibus back to Peach Blossom Spring Square for 10 yuan, with one bus per hour. The Linshao Feishu bus costs 20 yuan and has more frequent trips. Take a 20-minute bus to the bottom of Youzhou Ancient City, and then walk 2 kilometers to the entrance of Peach Blossom Spring Scenic Area, or take a sightseeing bus for 2 yuan directly to Peach Blossom Spring Square. (3) I walked 5 kilometers before entering Taikoo Caves and spent 2.5 hours there. When the road forked, I had basically walked three-quarters of the entire loop and soon arrived at the entrance of the scenic area. I walked 5 kilometers in Taikoo Caves (the scenic area indicated that it was more than 3 kilometers and that you could not enter the cave after 5 o'clock), which took 3.5 hours. There were very few people entering Taikoo Caves, and there were basically no staff in the caves. I should have left earlier. There was no toilet along the way.

Since the Shu Han Dynasty, Longtan has successively been the seat of "County Magistrate", "Inspector", "State Tong" and "County Assistant", with a history of more than 1,700 years. The Tusi ruling policy of "Barbarians do not leave the cave, Han people do not enter the country" for more than 600 years since the Song and Qing Dynasties has created the unique architectural art and magical ethnic culture of Longtan, a thousand-year-old ancient town. The ancient town was built along the Meishu River, with a large scale and well preserved. The existing 3-kilometer stone slab street has been polished to a mirror-like shine and green like jade, and ancient marine fossils appear from time to time. More than 50 Tujia stilt houses have raised corners and flying eaves, and their shapes are beautiful. There are many shops on the street, and the alleys are connected to each other. The fire-proof walls are fortified and magnificent. The quadrangle is simple and quiet, and quite distinctive.
