The location of Loop on Leith strikes a near-perfect balance.
Although the hotel sits close to the lively Lebuh Chulia, it is cleverly tucked away along Leith Street. Chulia Street is a hub for backpackers and nightlife, so evenings can get noisy. By setting itself slightly inward, Loop on Leith neatly avoids the brunt of street noise, while still placing you just a four-minute walk from the iconic Blue Mansion (Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion), where you can easily begin your street food adventure.
Its positioning works as an ideal base for urban exploration. Head north and you’ll find the refined charm of the heritage district; head south and you step straight into the vibrant pulse of the city center.
The hotel embraces an Urban Chic concept, deliberately doing away with traditional heavy carpeting—a smart choice in a tropical climate, as it helps reduce mustiness and allergens. Instead, modern hard flooring and bright lighting create a space that feels noticeably fresher and cleaner, both visually and physically, compared to older Peranakan-style hotels in the same price range.
Rooms here tend to be on the smaller side. For two guests traveling with large luggage, the space can feel a bit tight. It’s best suited for travelers who spend most of their day বাইরে exploring and simply want a comfortable place to rest at night—think light packers or efficiency-focused “urban explorers.”
At roughly RM250 per night, Loop on Leith delivers a boutique-like aesthetic and standardized service at a budget hotel price point. The value-for-money and overall sense of comfort are impressive.
It lacks the heavy, sometimes oppressive atmosphere of heritage buildings, and also avoids the blandness of chain hotels. This makes it especially appealing to young couples, solo travelers, or business visitors.
If you’re looking for a spacious executive suite, this may not be the right choice. But if your priorities are efficiency, cleanliness, and stepping straight into great food and scenery the moment you walk out, it stands out as a smart option in George Town’s mid-range market.
For an even better stay, consider requesting a higher-floor room—it offers a slightly more open view and helps buffer early morning street noise from passing motorcycles.
For solo travelers like me, this place is incredibly convenient because of its excellent transportation links. All the main attractions – whether it's the beach, historic houses, restaurants, or various downtown spots – are within walking distance. I stayed here for a week and didn't need a single taxi. In the evenings, I could just stroll out to a bar or find some great food. I even made quite a few friends! The hotel's restaurant is also very good. Overall, the value for money here is exceptional.
I booked a sea view room, and when I woke up in the morning, a picturesque view was right before my eyes. The front desk staff was very friendly during check-in, and parking was convenient. I'd definitely book this hotel again next time.
The hotel's location is great, within walking distance to all attractions in the center of Georgetown. The rooms are clean and tidy, but the breakfast selection isn't very rich. The front desk staff could be a bit more enthusiastic. Parking can be a bit tight; if you come back late, you might struggle to find a spot. Otherwise, everything else was quite good.
The room was spacious and clean, with a great view from the window. The service was exceptional; they helped with luggage as soon as I got out of the car and delivered it to my room after check-in. The location is also excellent, with a fantastic night market downstairs.
I was upgraded to a Deluxe room but it was at the extreme corner next to the service staircase. Grateful for the upgraded but the room conditions were not up to par . Hair in shower room , the shower holder fell when I was taking it out and it dropped on my toe . Hence the blue black toe shown ( hehe ) . I could not sleep the whole night as the air con was very very noisy even when I lower the adjustment. The day curtain was torn . I sound it out to reception the next morning to see whether they can change my room as I was staying for another 2 nights . They did and I reckoned it was another up grade as now the room has a standing shower room . In the other previous room , you have to stand in the bath tub to shower and for a man of 65 , it is a bit tricky . The hotel really needs an up grade too . It is in a good location and CAT bus is nearby . The CAT shuttle is a complimentary bus that moves around the town area .
The saving grace for my trip was that the staff was up to par and reacted quickly . Well done on this .
Now , I wait for my toe to heal .
The room space was perfect, unfortunate was not very perfect in the cleanliness and maintenace expect.
1. Curtkain not able to fully close
2. The flooring need to do major maintenance
3. Toilet bowl base badly stain
3. Shower room wall stain badly
4. Room tables and wall skirting need new paint.
Room rate book for this room is not what expected
• The Hotel: The hotel is easy access from main road. The building is conjoined with michelin restaurant (same entrance in lobby).
• The room: I arrived an hour early and the staff offer earlier checkin since my room was ready, how amazing! The room was enough for 1 person and there's a designated space for luggage so it didn't block the way / on the floor. Clean and well maintained. Basic amenities were met. Hot/Cold water works (just need time to warm up). Window can be open for air movement. I didn't have breakfast service because there're SO many restaurants nearby and walking distance.
• The nearby attractions: The reason I chose this hotel cause it's all walking distance from places I want to go. The famous Penang Laksa is just 5 minutes walk from the hotel! And 2 minutes walk from the hotel is Kimberley Street (famous for night market street foods). There are 1 convenience store 24/7 within 4 mins of the hotel walk. The iconic P66 Store is walking distance (7 minutes), Makan Pagi is just 10 minutes walk, and even: the famous Armenian Street is just 1km / 10 minutes slow walk away from the hotel. The location is just strategic for my itineraries.
Overall, I enjoy my stay and if I visit Penang again, definitely will stay here. It's safe for female solo travelers.
Notes: 1) Like others pointed out, there's no concierge and trolley service so you gotta drag your suitcases. Entrance access is wheelchair friendly too!
2) There're 100 MYR deposit, to be returned when you checkout (don't lose the paper receipt!)
Although the hotel opened in 2014, the rooms' facilities and cleanliness are still very well-maintained. The shower has great water pressure, making for a very comfortable bathing experience. The pillows in the room were a bit uncomfortable for me – too high and too springy. The bed was large and the mattress was very comfortable. My room didn't come with bathrobes. It was quiet at night, and the air conditioning in the room was strong. Directly opposite the hotel is a large shopping mall, and a big supermarket is not far away. It's also within walking distance to various attractions. The infinity pool is excellent, with a good long lane for swimming. Breakfast is served from 6:30 AM to 10 AM, and the food selection is substantial and fitting for a 4-star hotel, offering everything you'd expect.
Not at the noisy beach area yet easily accessible to Georgetown (15 mins via Grab). There's a hawker centre with good local food. In house cafe, bar at the hotel. Walkable to the beach from the pool area. Overall, the amenities and service are adequate. For a Mercure brand of hotel, it's good to check it out.

GGuest UserThis hotel truly deserves a good review. I'd definitely stay here again on my next visit.
**Service:** Top-notch! The hotel knew we needed to change (Penang was so hot!), and they let us check in early at 10 AM since a room was available. Water was also delivered to our room very quickly.
**Location:** Super convenient. There's a 7-Eleven right next door and a shopping mall.
**Accommodation Experience:** I requested a standing shower room in advance, and that's exactly what I got. The bed was quite large, and the overall feeling was spacious and clean.
**Dining:** During the May Day holiday, there was about a 5-minute wait for breakfast, which was perfectly acceptable.

GGuest UserFacilities: The hotel's facilities exude a sense of luxury and elegance everywhere. However, they're also a bit impractical. For example, the sink is too wide; an Asian woman might have to stand on her tiptoes to wash her face, and her stomach would be pressed against the cold basin.
Cleanliness: It was generally clean, but there was mold around the shower gel and shampoo dispenser.
Ambiance: No issues at all, a century-old hotel with a central sea view.
Service: Everyone was quite enthusiastic, but I still wonder if tipping is expected/necessary?
DDidimeinvFacilities: Excellent. The gym is good, and so is the pool.
Cleanliness: Very clean. Turndown service was provided daily with aromatherapy.
Environment: This is the only area in Penang with a beach.
Service: Warm and welcoming. Replenishments were very prompt.

GGuest UserTHE MOST AMAZING HOTE I HAVE EVER STAYED IN 10/10
1. Hotel Locaiton: Perfect as its not in the city and by the beach, amazing for relaxation. Hotel is surrounded by souvenir shops and street food. 10miute walk from Ferringhi Walk where there is a nice selection of street food but my favourite of all is that its just a 2 minute walk from my favorite restaurant in Malaysia, Ferringhi Garden. Penang trip isnt complete without going to Ferringhi Garden. Its an amazing restaurant with the most beautiful collection of plants, there is no other place like it in Malaysia.
2. The Hotel: Nothing bad to say about it. The design, the decor, everything about this hotel makes me want to stay there even longer. Its such a nice feeling being there. Facilities are clean and complete.
3. The Room: CLEAN. NICE. SPACIOUS. BEAUTIFUL. Every inch of the room is to my liking, i could not have asked for more. Mattress is thick and oh so comfortable. Aircond was cold. Room was very spacious.
4.The Buffet: The room came with breakfast for 2 and it was the perfect buffet to start each day with. Selection was incredible even better than a lot of buffet Ramadan Ive been to. They had everything from selections of breads, to nasi lemak with 12 different sambals, 5 different meat dishes to eat it with, assorted fruits, assorted cheeses, 2 types of porridge with the FULL suites of condiments, salads, pastries, roti canai with all the curries you will ever need, to your above average selection of continental breakfast menus like, beef bacon, beef and chicken sausages, hash browns, deli meats, smoked fish. And there is more! there is a made-to-order menu which many patrons are not aware of. I tried the minute steak and it was good!(pictured below)
PS: Hakimi from breakfast service was spectacular, I requested strawberries for my picky 2 year old and he delivered. On the other hand, ANIS FROM THE OMELETTE STATION WAS RUDE TO MY WIFE, SHE NEEDS TO IMPROVE HER SOCIAL SKILLS(this is my one and only complain)
Overall my stay was 10/10 and this will be the ONLY hotel i will be staying at if when im at Batu Ferringhi. I plan to go to Park Royal Batu Ferringhi Annually, its just that good!
GGuest UserThe hotel environment was clean and comfortable. I especially loved the lobby area, which was perfect for relaxing and enjoying a cup of tea. The hotel was very thoughtful, as they provided welcome drinks every night, which made the stay feel extra special.
One downside was that the shower was not working properly, and the water flow was uneven. The drainage system was also poor, causing slight flooding in the bathroom while showering. In addition, there was a strong smell coming from the bathroom drain.
However, if these bathroom issues could be improved, the overall experience would be really good and enjoyable.
SShengxiaotuExtremely satisfied, very satisfied.
Checked in on the 20th floor and enjoyed the view while waiting.
Hygiene: The room was spacious, clean, and tidy, with a separate wet and dry area in the bathroom.
Facilities: The infinity pool on the top floor was fantastic, with plenty of loungers and towels available. The pool water was also very clean.
Environment: Downstairs, the hotel is surrounded by convenience stores, coffee shops, restaurants, and nail salons.
Service: The check-in process was very thorough, with detailed explanations about WiFi connection, air conditioning temperature control, pool opening hours, and more.
