Intro to Clown Workshop with Janice Jo Lee Thurs July 3, 2025, 6:30-9:30PM Blair Hall (Upstairs/elevator) Conrad Centre, Kitchener Ages 15+, No Experience Necessary You must register in advanceHere on Eventbrite or $25 at janicejolee.ca WORKSHOP Clown is a style of theatrical comedy where the performer is fully embodied, follows their joy, is vulnerable, fully commits to the bit, is not afraid to flop, raises the stakes, and believes in themselves with their whole heart that they are brilliant. Everything is for the audience, to see them, and be seen. Clown training empowers performers to shed self-judgement, take risks, build confidence and be a conduit of joy. Performers will improvise, use their bodies, their voices, write their own text, and create movement choreography. As an ensemble, we will experiment, stretch, and flop and arrive at listening and trust, where we move as one. Come dressed to sweat, bring water, notebook, pen, and a snack for breaktime. DIRECTOR Janice Jo Lee (she/they) is a queer, Korean multidisciplinary artist born in Tkaronto. She is an educator, theatre maker, musician, and spoken word poet. They have directed workshops and creation labs with their project Play Play Clown Theatre since Fall 2022 at Sweet Action Theatre. Janice directed devised theatre creation labs for MT Space, Le Project N’we Jinan, and Randolph Kids. They have facilitated arts and anti-oppression programming professionally for 15 years. Janice was the founding artistic director of the KW Poetry Slam, was the City of Kitchener Artist in Residence 2015, and was voted Best Performing Artist by readers of the Community Edition from 2016-2019. Upcoming: Directing Play Play Clown Theatre’s “Hope in Hot Times” Hamilton Fringe July 17-26, 2025. Testimonials: “Janice makes training content extremely accessible for people of different learning styles, ways of life and performance backgrounds. How the content of each session applies to performance techniques is very clear and nothing seems too abstract or generalized. Play Play is always a safe, valuable and memorable time that I trust to continually elevate me as an artist.” “I think its really lovely to explore the micro parts of clown and performing --- I love the focus on the body and how this connects emotionally through creation! It brought more awareness to my body as a performer, which was very helpful as someone who gets stuck in their head!” “Janice speaks with precision and kindness -- her instruction is always clear, yet she somehow finds a way to leave room for exploration and discovery in all of her lessons. She is attuned with what an individual performer needs and is willing to spend the time to push people to their best. She makes class fun, yet has a dynamic approach to teaching that promotes curiosity and play within her students!” Information Source: Janice Jo Lee | eventbrite

Protect the Centre: A Community Fundraiser for Willow River Centre | Victoria Park Pavilion

Jul 7, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Kitchener
Cultural Experiences
Willow River Centre is the only Indigenous, two-spirit, and queer-led non-profit organization in the Waterloo Region, and it’s at risk of permanent closure. The Willow River Centre has been a vital gathering place rooted in Indigenous leadership and care. It has provided a home for healing, organizing, and cultural resurgence for those most often pushed to the margins. But without sustainable funding or institutional support, the Centre may be forced to shut down. This isn’t just a funding issue: it’s a reflection of the ongoing colonial dispossession, the systemic erasure of Indigenous life, and the refusal to return land or resources to the communities that rightfully steward them. Now is the time to show up. To stand beside Indigenous community members and protect the only space of its kind in our region. Join us on Monday, July 7 at 5:00 PM at Victoria Park Pavilion for the Protect the Centre Fundraiser! It will be night of raffles, auctions, prizes and shared food. All proceeds go to supporting the Centre. Information Source: Willow River Centre | eventbrite
