Singapore
Idea of North 2024 presents a curator's tour with Osman Mohammad on the exhibits of TENUNAN: A view on tapestry of historical processes! Join Bruneian curator Osman Mohammad as he delves into the curatorial narratives and exhibits of TENUNAN: A View on Tapestry of Historical Processes. TENUNAN is a visual arts exhibition that explores Kain Tenunan, or Songket, as a metaphor to explore the intricacies of historical developments. Known for its intricate craftsmanship and cultural significance, Songket mirrors the complexity of weaving historical narratives. This exhibition draws parallels between the art of Songket weaving and the fabric of history. Each thread in Songket represents different societal elements—social movements, economic changes, and cultural shifts—interwoven to create a comprehensive tapestry of human experience. Just as weavers design patterns in Songket, historical events form patterns that reflect societal dynamics, trends, and transformations. The 3 featured artists will discuss their creative processes and the cultural themes in their works & provide a deeper understanding of the exhibition's themes and the interconnectedness of history, culture, and identity: Yasmin Jaidin's Titih : Five fabric sculptures of padi plants made from tulle, exploring one’s identity within generational gaps. Faizal Hamdan's works: Colonial Sofa, Human Eggshells Specimen, and Langkayu, explore colonial influence, historical ambiguity, and the purpose of life. Armacester Arsad's paintings: Focus on layers, translucency, and cultural elements, created through a process of experimentation. TENUNAN is part of The Idea of North – a 4-day festival commemorating the 40th anniversary of bilateral relations between Brunei and Singapore. **TENUNAN: A View on Tapestry of Historical Processes is open for public viewing from 18 September - 16 October 2024 at the Gallery, 10 Square Orchard Central. It is January 1942, and the Japanese invading army draws closer. The British Army is overwhelmed, outmaneuvered, and the fortress of Singapore will fall... unless desperate measures are taken.
In a desperate cry for help, the team of commanders turns to dark forces - a Book of Summonings, an ancient ritual.
But chaos is unleashed instead, for Bellum, the demon lord of war, is unpredictable. His minions are bloodthirsty as well. These beings who bring deceit, sorrow, violence and chaos - all the horrors of war, demand sacrifice. They want flesh, they want souls.
Witness chaos as the bonds are broken and the demons sweep through the underground bunkers - each playing their twisted game to exact a terrible price from the humans who dared to start the war!

[SDW 2024] SLEEP: LESS/ VR Installation | Naumi Hotel Singapore
Sep 26, 2024 (UTC+8)ENDED
Singapore
SLEEP is a two-part experience comprising SLEEP: DIVING IN and SLEEP: LESS. It investigates elements of ideal sleep hygiene rituals to overcome insomnia and the stories of individuals with unusual relationships to sleep. SLEEP: LESS explores eight sleep stories of individuals with unique relationships to sleep and their associated brain activities. How do the daily lives of a post-natal mother, a doctor on 30-hour night call duty and a night-shift security guard intersect in their sleepless routines? In this VR experience, narratives unfold through an immersive exploration of disrupted sleep cycles and other ways of inhabiting our restless city. With curiosity, we nurture a sense of empathy for those among us who often do not have a choice in their circadian rhythms, finding loneliness, solitude, or hidden networks. These stories of everyday people, from hawkers to night-shift taxi drivers, beg us to question: What if there are many ways to nurture circadian cycles? What if, beyond the ebb and flow of moonrise, we could also tune into the tides and rhythms of our inner body clock, our creative soul and the calling of a job at once, privilege and curse? SLEEP: LESS is designed and developed by Forest & Whale in collaboration with the LASALLE College of the Arts, University of the Arts Singapore, with second-year students from the BA (Hons) Design for Social Futures programme. It is presented in partnership with Naumi Hotel Singapore and is one in a ten-part People of Design Showcase Series presented across the Bras Basah.Bugis Design District. -------------- SLEEP is part of the People of Design Showcases Series, a key event of Singapore Design Week curated by Hans Tan together with a team of designer-curators. Ten showcases presented across the Bras Basah.Bugis Design District creatively examines the rituals of daily life through the lens of design, where each showcase delves into a specific activity such as Eat, Sleep, Shop, Read, Heal, Make, Plant, Commute, Display and Design. Through new works and collaborative projects, visitors will discover imaginative design possibilities shaped to offer fresh perspectives on the world around us, inspiring new ways of thinking, seeing, and experiencing daily life.
