Sunshine on a Cloudy Day: California Prints 1960 - 1990 | Susan Sheehan Gallery
Oct 24–Dec 20, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
New York
Susan Sheehan Gallery presents Sunshine on a Cloudy Day: California Prints 1960 – 1990, a group exhibition that brings together artworks printed and published at some of the most influential printmaking workshops in California. Borrowing from the lyrics of the 1964 song My Girl by The Temptations, the title of the exhibition references the weather on the West Coast, arguably one reason why so many artists established on the East Coast would often retreat to these workshops for extended periods of time and create some of their most significant bodies of work.
Order/Disorder by Tyler Hobbs with Noam Segal | Rizzoli Bookstore
Oct 24, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
New York
Join Tyler Hobbs for the launch of his debut monograph, Order/Disorder. He will be in conversation with Noam Segal, the LG Electronics Associate Curator at the Guggenheim Museum, followed by a Q&A and book signing. Both the Trade Edition and Collector's Edition of Order/Disorder will be available for purchase. PLEASE NOTE: RSVPs are encouraged but not required. Seating is limited and will be first come, first served. Doors open at 5:30 pm. Tyler Hobbs’ debut monograph is one of the first to focus on the work of a generative artist. Contextualizing his art from 2018–2023, Order/Disorder includes works from Hobbs’ solo exhibitions at Unit, London, and Pace, New York, in 2023. Structured around the concept of dualities, the book explores Hobbs’ systematic approaches to art making, the creative relationship between man and machine, computer-led aesthetics, and the interplay of repetition and emergence across long-form generative projects. Order/Disorder features an interview between Hobbs and Hans Ulrich Obrist, artistic director of the Serpentine Galleries, and an essay by Melanie Lenz, curator of digital art at the Victoria & Albert Museum, alongside texts by the artist that introduce each thematically arranged section of plates. Tyler Hobbs is a visual artist from Austin, Texas, working with algorithms, plotters, and paint. His work focuses on computational aesthetics, how they are shaped by the biases of modern computer hardware and software, and how they relate to and interact with the natural world around us. By taking a generative approach to art making, his work explores the possibilities of creation at scale and the powers of emergence.
Hobbs’ most notable project, Fidenza, is a series of 999 algorithmically generated works comprising one of the most sought-after fine art NFT collections. His work has been exhibited internationally, with recent solo exhibitions at Unit, London (2023) and Pace Gallery, New York (2023). Hobbs’ pieces have been included in numerous events by leading auction houses such as Christie’s, Phillips and Sotheby’s. Notable public institutions holding his work include the Los Angeles County Museum of Art , San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Art and Light (Kansas). Tyler holds a BS in Computer Science from the University of Texas at Austin. Noam Segal is the LG Electronics Associate Curator at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, NYC. She holds a Ph.D. in hermeneutics and culture studies (Bar Ilan University) and a BA in Philosophy and Political Science (Tel Aviv University). Segal’s work deals with the intersection of the digital, political and social in contemporary art.

The chronologically arranged galleries will feature longstanding strengths of the collection—such as masterpieces by Jan van Eyck, Caravaggio, and Poussin; the most extensive collection of 17th-century Dutch art in the western hemisphere; and the finest holdings of El Greco and Goya outside Spain—while also giving renewed attention to women artists, exploring Europe’s complex relationships with New Spain and the Viceroyalty of Peru, and looking more deeply into histories of class, gender, race, and religion.
The reopening of the suite of 45 galleries at the top of the Great Hall staircase follows a five-year project to replace the skylights. This monumental infrastructure project improves the quality of light and enhances the viewing experience for a new look at this renowned collection.

This porcelain head, a self-portrait, is glazed in shades of blue and covered with metallic droplets called “silver mist,” or gintekisai. The term, like the secret technique that produces the effect, was invented by ceramicist Kondō Takahiro (born 1958). Based in Kyoto, Japan, he carries on a legacy of innovation in ceramic art. For the last one hundred years, Kondō Takahiro and his father Kondō Hiroshi (1936–2012), grandfather Kondō Yūzō (1902–1985), and uncle Kondō Yutaka (1932–1983) have broken free of centuries-old traditions to pursue original, individual expression.
Porcelains in the Mist brings together sixty-one pieces that celebrate the Kondō family’s innovations and talents. Their early creations range from freehand-painted vases to pure-white jars. Most of the works on view are by Takahiro, who often pairs his “mist,” which he describes as “water born from fire,” with dramatic shapes and textures. Several of these powerful porcelains reflect his personal responses to monumental events, particularly the 2011 earthquake and tsunami that devastated northeastern Japan.
Museum Spotlights are intimate installations of noteworthy collection works, recent acquisitions, and loans, presented to encourage deeper conversations about art, history, and justice.
Porcelains in the Mist: The Kondō Family of Ceramicists is organized by the Brooklyn Museum based on the exhibition Transcendent Clay/Kondo: A Century of Japanese Ceramic Art, originally presented by the Lowe Art Museum, University of Miami, and guest curated by Joe Earle. The Brooklyn Museum’s presentation is organized by Joan Cummins, Lisa and Bernard Selz Senior Curator, Asian Art.
We are grateful to Carol and Jeffrey Horvitz, whose generosity and enthusiasm made this exhibition possible.
