Photography and the Black Arts Movement, 1955–1985 | The National Gallery
Sep 21, 2025–Jan 4, 2026 (UTC-5)
Washington D.C.
The first exhibition to consider photography’s impact on a cultural and aesthetic movement that celebrated Black history, identity, and beauty. As Black Americans continued their struggle for political liberation and self-determination in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s, a group of artists, poets, musicians, playwrights, and filmmakers united around a new approach—art. Using creative mediums to express messages of Black empowerment and advance social justice, their efforts became known as the Black Arts Movement, often considered the cultural arm of the Black Power Movement. Photography was central to the movement, attracting all kinds of artists—from street photographers and photojournalists to painters and graphic designers. This expansive exhibition presents 150 examples by over 100 artists. Explore the radical vision shaped by generations of artists including Billy Abernathy, Romare Bearden, Kwame Brathwaite, Roy DeCarava, Doris Derby, Emory Douglas, Barkley Hendricks, Barbara McCullough, Betye Saar, and Ming Smith. See how they both shaped and documented the Black Arts Movement.

Last Minute!: Latinas Report Breaking News | Smithsonian National Museum of American History
Sep 15, 2023–Aug 17, 2025 (UTC-5)
Washington D.C.
Latina journalists wrote the first draft of history for Spanish-speaking communities in the United States.Breaking News! Latinas Report Breaking News is a bilingual exhibition featuring stories from Latina journalists to show how Spanish-language television gave voice and visibility to a broad segment of the American public and how these journalists advocate for Spanish-speaking communities and navigate the fast-paced, ever-changing pace of breaking news. In the approximately 1,000-square-foot gallery, visitors will explore broadcast journalism through the work of journalists such as Ilia Calderón, Dunia Elvir, Marilys Llanos, Gilda Mirós, Lori Montenegro, Maria Elena Salinas, and Blanca Rosa Vílchez. A multimedia piece will illustrate these women's accounts as eyewitnesses to important histories like the Vietnam War, 9/11, and the Black Lives Matter protests, as well as issues of cultural and political significance to local Latinx communities that are sometimes overlooked by English-language news. Working in the characteristic fast-paced, ever-changing environment of news production, these women shaped the narrative of major historical events while collaborating with their local and national Latinx communities to provide news coverage that meets their needs.

AMF Site Visit to Rolls Royce | Rolls-Royce Washington
Jul 9, 2025 (UTC+1)
Washington D.C.
AMF Site Visit to Rolls Royce, Washington
Join us for our June monthly meeting taking place at Rolls Royce, Washington.
The 18,000 sq ft plant manufactures discs for a variety of Trent engines, taking a moulded alloy and machining slots along the edges with a “fir tree” design so that turbine blades can then be slotted in. Each disc needs to be machined and treated precisely, to withstand the heat and pressures inside an engine, and also to ensure the blades stay exactly in place, given that the forces on that fir tree slot can be about 100 tons or the equivalent of hanging a freight train off each blade.
Production intelligence
With each disc costing up to £100,000 and a challenging production schedule that demands 2,500 of them are produced each year, it’s vital to know exactly where each and every one of those discs is, and where it stands in the process, to maximise the production flow.
Despite being up to 160kg in weight and as wide as a car tyre, it is still surprisingly easy for a part to go “missing” if it is sent back through the production process for additional work and has to take its place in the queue along with the rest of the workstream.
That’s where Production Intelligence comes in. Each disc now has its own router with its own part number, sending out a signal 24/7 that connects it with a GPS map of the plant. If any production leader needs to know exactly where a part is, they can log into a specialist app on their phone – and find out where it is.
At the site’s central hub, production leaders can take that information a lot further. All those transponder signals are shown on one large screen, displaying a wealth of data on each disc’s status – how long it has remained stationary in the system, how it stands against its production dispatch target (it typically takes 4-6 weeks for a disc to make it through the entire system), and engineers can tag on their own comments about any issues that may be hindering progress.
Which means team leaders at the hub can then see the overall picture and prioritise the order in which discs are machined.

Maris Kreizman - I Want to Burn This Place Down | Solid State Books
Jul 11, 2025 (UTC-4)
Washington D.C.
Join us for an exciting night with Maris Kreizman, as she discusses her debut essay colleciton,
I Want to Burn This Place Down
This in-person event will be held at Solid State Books on H St. NE. Don't miss out!
A debut essay collection by the inimitable cultural critic Maris Kreizman—an introspective, searing account of the life experiences that have pushed this former “good Democrat” even further to the political left
At the heart of this funny, acerbic, and bravely honest book of essays is Maris Kreizman, a former rule follower and ambition monster who once believed the following truths to be self-evident: that working very hard would lead to admission to a good college, which would lead to a good job at a good company, which would then lead to personal fulfillment and a sense of purpose, along with adequate health care and eventual home ownership and plenty of money waiting in a retirement account. Like any good Democrat and feminist, she believed that if she just worked hard and played by the rules, she was guaranteed a safe and comfortable life.
Now in her forties, the only thing Maris Kreizman knows for sure is that she no longer has faith in American institutions or any of their hollow promises. Now she knows that the rules are meant to serve some folks better than others; and, actually, they serve no one all that well—not even Kreizman. Disturbed by the depth and scope of the liberal myths in which she once so fervently believed, Kreizman takes readers on an intimate journey that revisits some of her most profound revelations, demonstrating that it’s never too late to become radicalized.
With Kreizman’s signature wit and blunt self-reflection, and more than a little transformative rage,
I Want to Burn This Place Down
is a book for anyone who wishes they could go back in time to give their younger selves the real truth about the fractured country they have inherited—and the encouragement to rebuild something better in its place.
