Waterstones Liverpool Welcomes Stuart Maconie | OH ME OH MY

Jun 11, 2025 (UTC+1)
Liverpool
Arts
Everyone knows a Beatles tune. But their story goes beyond the omnipresent songs and iconic albums. Theirs is a tale that has become one of the core stories we tell about ourselves as a nation. The Beatles narrative has both shaped and reflected the country we live in today. Four lads from Liverpool have taken a seat alongside Shakespeare as one of our key cultural exports to the world, a world they changed and re-made in their own image in a blaze of creativity. But these four distinct personalities changed the world not in isolation but with more than a little help from their friends. Like all the best stories there’s an incredible supporting cast, and all the most compelling elements of the great dramas: ambition, power, triumph, disaster, heartbreak, tragedy, drama, intrigue, lust…and of course, love. Split into 3 sections, Before The Beatles, With the Beatles and Beyond the Beatles, bestselling writer and broadcaster Stuart Maconie tells the epic tale of the people who made the band who made Britain, and along the way adds his own experiences, encounters and conversations that show the Beatles like you’ve never seen them before. Perfect reading for fans of One Two Three Four and Revolution in the Head , Maconie's characteristically witty and brilliantly original dissection of the Beatles mythos pays tribute to the extraordinary cast of supporting characters who helped raise the Fab Four to superstardom. Stuart will be discussing his wonderful new book with Frank Cottrell-Boyce. Frank is a children's author, screenwriter, broadcaster, children's literacy advocate and is also the Children's Laureate. He is also a beloved son of Liverpool and a huge Beatles fan. Their conversation will be followed by an audience Q&A and then a book signing. Information Source: Waterstones | eventbrite

Better Places Together Conference: Rethinking Engagement & Social Value | BOXPARK Liverpool

Jun 12, 2025 (UTC+1)
Liverpool
Cultural Experiences
Overview How can we rethink engagement and social value from tender to legacy to create Better Places Together? What changes can we make to promote a shift from tokenism to trusted conversations? Are there opportunities to deliver more meaningful engagement that enables us to successfully listen to and advocate for less-heard voices? Can we improve social value initiatives to ensure they genuinely create long term change, not short-term solutions? In recent years, engagement and social value have become buzzwords in the sector, featuring as key requirements in tenders and a focus of discussion at built environment forums. Whilst the conversation is positive, the reality on the ground can often be fraught with challenges. Hosted at BOXPARK Liverpool, Better Places Together is a programme of collaboration and action from PLACED. Open to all, it will explore how rethinking the approach to engagement and social value can create better places for everyone. Better Places Together focuses on the crucial ‘how’ of engaging communities and less-heard groups, reflecting on ground-level experience and knowledge to rethink what constitutes best practice. The event aims to create a space for critical and open discussion, where the challenges and barriers to delivering successful engagement and social value can be discussed, and active solutions can be collectively devised. Better Places Together is organised and delivered by PLACED with the support of their valued collaborators and industry peers. To find out more about the event please visit: betterplacestogether.org.uk To find out more about PLACED: placed.org.uk #betterplacestogether What will the event entail? Better Places Together will comprise of three distinct parts: Commission. Deliver. Legacy. For each part, a small group of diverse storytellers will set the scene, drawing on their personal experiences to provide the foundation for discussions, provocations, and reflections. Our storytellers will be from a wide range of backgrounds and ages, and help to presenting different experiences with place. After each set of Storytellers, attendees will participate in facilitated group discussions and exchanges of ideas. Together we will explore what goes wrong – and right – at each stage, and how we could improve the process. Groups will be broad and representative, enabling participants to reflect on the experiences of others and the opportunities that exist to do things differently. A reflection session will enable participants to hear from each other and other groups, and key observations to be fed back. Finally, an interactive session will bring the event to a close, with a series of prompts to help participants create an Action Plan for taking their learning from the conference into their work, helping to take learning into action. There will be opportunities to network and make new connections throughout the day . After the event, PLACED will also provide a report of key learnings. More information on the storytellers will be announced. Fringe events and will also support the main event - more information will be released shortly. Waterstones Liverpool welcomes Ela Lee and Hanako Footman | 12 College Ln

Jun 19, 2025 (UTC+1)
Liverpool
Arts
We are delighted to welcome Ela Lee and Hanako Footman who join us to discuss their widely acclaimed and thought-provoking novels Jaded and Mongrel which both look at the themes of consent, power, sex and desire. Jaded - A multi-faceted and brave exploration of race, power and violence, Jaded finds a successful young woman's life irrevocably change after she is sexually attacked at work. She did everything right. So why did it go so wrong? Jade isn't even my real name. Jade began as my Starbucks name, because all children of immigrants have a Starbucks name. Jade has become everything she ever wanted to be. Successful lawyer. Dutiful daughter. Beloved girlfriend. Loyal friend. Until one night, something terrible happens after a work event, and she starts to wonder if she really wants to be the person she’s become. She’s learned to laugh when she’s felt like crying, opted to be invisible when she wanted to speak up and changed her identity to please people. But now Jade has to make a decision for herself. The question is, which is the right one? This searing novel explores the strength we find in female friendship, the hope that lights up the dark moments and recovery that’s far from linear, and will leave you asking yourself: what would you have done in Jade’s situation? Mongrel - In strikingly beautiful prose, Footman's luminous debut interweaves the stories of three women in suburban Surrey, London and Tokyo to explore grief, identity and the politics of desire. Mei loses her Japanese mother at age six. Growing up in suburban Surrey, she yearns to fit in, suppressing not only her heritage but her growing desire for her best friend Fran. Yuki leaves the Japanese countryside to pursue her dream of becoming a concert violinist in London. Far from home and in an unfamiliar city, she finds herself caught up in the charms of her older teacher. Haruka attempts to navigate Tokyo's nightlife and all of its many vices, working as a hostess in the city's sex district. She grieves a mother who hid so many secrets from her, until finally one of those secrets comes to light . . . Shifting between three intertwining narratives, Mongrel reveals a tangled web of desire, isolation, belonging and ultimately, hope. After Ela and Hanako's dsicussion there will be an audience Q&A and then the chance to get your books signed. Information Source: Waterstones | eventbrite
