Launch of Paige Reynolds' "Modernism in Irish Women's Contemporary Writing" | 1 Washington Mews
Nov 14, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
New York
Modernism in Irish Women's Contemporary Writing: The Stubborn Mode (Oxford UP, 2024) examines the tangled relationship between contemporary Irish women writers and literary modernism. In the early decades of the twenty-first century, Irish women's fiction has drawn widespread critical acclaim and commercial success, with a surprising number of these works being commended for their innovative redeployment of literary tactics drawn from early twentieth-century literary modernism. But this strategy is not a new one. Across more than a century, writers from Kate O'Brien to Sally Rooney have manipulated and remade modernism to draw attention to the vexed nature of female privacy, exploring what unfolds when the amorphous nature of private consciousness bumps up against external ordering structures in the public world. Living amid the tenaciously conservative imperatives of church and state in Ireland, their female characters are seen to embrace, reject, and rework the ritual of prayer, the fixity of material objects, the networks of the digital world, and the ordered narrative of the book. The writers studied here, among them Elizabeth Bowen, Edna O'Brien, Anne Enright, Anna Burns, Claire-Louise Bennett, and Eimear McBride, employ the modernist mode in part to urge readers to recognize that female interiority, the prompt for many of the movement's illustrious formal experiments, continues to provide a crucial but often overlooked mechanism to imagine ways around and through seemingly intransigent social problems, such as class inequity, political violence, and sexual abuse. Paige Reynolds, Professor of English at the College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, Massachusetts, publishes on the subjects of modernism, drama and performance, and modern and contemporary Irish literature. She is author of Modernism in Irish Women’s Contemporary Writing: The Stubborn Mode (Oxford UP, 2024) and Modernism, Drama, and the Audience for Irish Spectacle (Cambridge UP, 2007). She also has edited the collections Modernist Afterlives in Irish Literature and Culture (Anthem Press, 2016), The New Irish Studies (Cambridge UP, 2020), and (with Eric Falci) Irish Literature in Transition, Volume 6, 1980-2020 (Cambridge UP, 2020). Paige will be in conversation with Emily C. Bloom, Public Humanities Fellow at Sarah Lawrence College. Her debut memoir, I Cannot Control Everything Forever: A Memoir of Motherhood, Science, and Art was published with St. Martin’s Press in 2024. Her first book, The Wireless Past: Anglo-Irish Writers and the BBC, 1931-1968 (Oxford, 2016) examines the role of public broadcasting in shaping twentieth-century literature. Her articles have appeared in Public Books, Eire-Ireland, The Irish Times, and elsewhere.

Adolph Gottlieb Vital Images | Pace Gallery
Nov 15–Dec 21, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
New York
Pace is pleased to present Vital Images, an exhibition of late paintings, works on paper, and sculpture by Adolph Gottlieb, at its 540 West 25th Street gallery in New York. Running from November 14 to December 21, this show will spotlight paintings created by the artist in the final years of his life. Holistically, the exhibition will reveal the intense ambition and formal refinement that motivated Gottlieb’s practice in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Beginning his career as an artist in New York in the 1920s, Gottlieb would become one of the founding members of The Ten, a group of artists devoted to expressionist and abstract painting, in 1935. Eight years later, he helped establish another group of abstract painters, The New York Artist Painters, which included Mark Rothko, John Graham, and George L. K. Morris. In 1943, Gottlieb co-authored and published a letter with Rothko in The New York Times, expressing what is now considered the first formal statement of the concerns of Abstract Expressionism.

François Garaude, from a quiet bourgeois family in Paris, felt the shock deeply. May '68 called him to adventure, and at 16, he left his scandalized family behind, hitchhiking across Central Asia. Each day brought new challenges, dangers, or remarkable discoveries. In India, François found a world where spirituality explained and shaped life. The sacred temples reminded him of the Romanesque churches of his childhood, where every detail held meaning. His journey became a spiritual quest, but illness brought him back to France. From this experience, he gained a deep desire to find meaning in everything. And in his pockets, he carried home a topaz and a moonstone—his first talismans. The Journey and Joy Of Creation at NYC Jewelry Week 2024 | Museum of Arts and Design

New York
Come behind the scenes with Rosena Sammi for a deeply personal look at the creative process behind David Michael Jewels. This engaging conversation (between two New Zealanders!) will bring some of Michael's favorite pieces to life, revealing their inspiration and why his meticulous approach, from the first watercolor rendering to the microscopic stone setting, is critical to his extraordinary work. Rosena Sammi designed and crafted jewelry collections under her namesake line for more than a decade. Her jewelry was sold at all the leading department stores, worn by A-List celebrities such as Rihanna and Blake Lively and was featured in the likes of Vogue. However, she grew disenchanted with the rise of fast fashion and the lack of diversity in the jewelry industry. So was born ‘The Jewelry Edit', a multi-brand e-commerce jewelry boutique carrying over 75 different designers, driven by a mission of social responsibility and diversity. Prior to her roles in fashion, Rosena practiced corporate law for almost a decade at leading law firms in New Zealand and New York. Rosena is an Adjunct Professor of Law at Parsons School of Design. Michael Robinson is a New Zealand born artist who creates single author jewels from his studio in Boston, Massachusetts. Single author means no other person touches the jewelry created by Michael. There is no workshop of assistants and designers, there is no casting or computer aided design. Michael hand forges each piece of metal and sculpts the jewelry, completing it with hand-set diamonds and gemstones. Michael chooses to work this way because it is important to him that anything he signs his name to is truly and authentically of his hand. Each November, NYC Jewelry Week proudly presents ‘The Week,’ a 7-day celebration dedicated to the art of jewelry. This annual event invites a global audience to explore the world of jewelry through a dynamic mix of in-person and virtual experiences, spanning New York City and beyond.

Culinary Alchemy: Caroline's Bioplastic Cooking Workshop
Join Caroline for a presentation of biomaterials: what they are and how they are being used in the textile industry.
Part 1. Caroline will speak about a variety of natural ingredients and provide examples of how designers and artists are incorporating biomaterials into their work. She will also explore the future potential of biomaterials in various industries.
Part 2. Caroline will host a live demonstration displaying techniques and applications for creating and shaping bioplastic. Natural ingredients will be used at a kitchen studio. Guests will be able to touch the materials and ask questions during this segment. About:
Caroline Zimbalist, is an artist and designer who hand creates one-of-a-kind pieces using nontraditional processes and techniques. She’s studied painting, illustrating, and sculpting since she was four and earned a BFA at Parsons studying fashion. She developed an enthusiasm for avant-garde design while furthering her schooling at Central Saint Martins, London. Always interested in making her own materials and pushing color boundaries, she started stripping abstract paintings off their frames and creating garments with the idea of draping bodies in different color palettes. For the past several years she has become proficient with bio-plastics and is creating clothing, jewelry, and sculptures with this relevant textile. She molds her unique recipe of biodegradable and natural materials into striking, three-dimensional forms not just for the ecological value of the technique but for the versatility it permits. @carolinezimbalist Ace Artist in Residence program, curated in partnership with collectives and institutions that inspire us, provides time to think and space to create. Every quarter, we invite artists across the globe to turn one of our hotel rooms into their studio for a month, then showcase the resulting body of work with the Ace community. @acehotelbrooklyn This year, the Brooklyn residencies are curated with Byline, the culture magazine at the forefront of new media in New York, founded in 2023 by editors Gutes Guterman and Megan O’Sullivan. They have chosen the theme “art as play” for their curatorial throughline, presenting four artists for their insights into this paradox of pleasure and productivity. @bylinebyline A well-appointed canvas for culinary and community engagement, the Demo Kitchen by Ace Hotel Brooklyn is a locus of epicurean culture — a light-filled space with floor to ceiling windows, dedicated to all things food and drink: restaurant pop-ups, mixology workshops, gastro-symposiums, cooking classes and chef-curated feasts. Since opening our doors in September 2021, the Demo Kitchen has hosted a full calendar of public events.

Princess Grace Irish Library Lecture: Margarita Cappock | 1 Washington Mews
Nov 21, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
New York
Please join us for the second lecture in our partnership with the Princess Grace Irish Library in Monaco, featuring Margarita Cappock. This illustrated lecture will explore the early life in Ireland of the celebrated artist Francis Bacon (1909-1992) and the complex relationship the artist had with Ireland, the land of his birth. It will also outline the significance of Bacon’s relationships with Irish writers, artists and photographers during his lifetime. Bacon was born at 63 Lower Baggot Street in Dublin. He was the second of five children born to English parents who had settled in Ireland at the beginning of the twentieth century. Bacon spent his early life in County Kildare and County Laois, with shorter stays in England during the First World War. The Irish War of Independence (1919-1921) and Civil War (1922-23) cast a shadow of violence over the countryside, particularly for the Protestant gentry such as the Bacons. Contrary to the common belief that Francis Bacon fled Ireland at 16 years of age, never to return, in 1929 he travelled to the west of Ireland with his companion and first patron, Eric Allden. This little-known trip reveals how influential Ireland was for Bacon and how the origins of Bacon’s artistic life can be found in Ireland. His earliest surviving painting can be traced to the depths of Connemara in the west of Ireland. Dr. Margarita Cappockis an art historian, curator and writer. A graduate of University College, Dublin she was formerly Head of Collections at the Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin which she joined in 1999 as Project Manager of the Francis Bacon Studio and Archive. There she led the team and coordinated the documentation and reconstruction of Bacon's Reece Mews studio and its contents. She is the author of the book Francis Bacon's Studio (Merrell Publishers, London and New York, 2005), which is the definitive text on the posthumous contents of Bacon’s studio and has written extensively on Francis Bacon and Irish, British and American Artists for The Burlington Magazine, the Irish Arts Review and other international academic journals and exhibition catalogues. She has lectured worldwide on Francis Bacon’s studio and acted as curatorial advisor for international exhibitions on Francis Bacon. She has contributed to several documentaries and most recently was concept originator and co-presenter with Adam Clayton of U2 on the documentary, Francis Bacon: The Outsider which aired on Ireland’s national broadcaster, RTÉ. She was Chair of ICOM Ireland from 2020 to 2023. In 2023, she was the Ireland Funds Academic in Residence at the Princess Grace Irish Library in Monaco. Margarita writes extensively on Irish art and artists, both historic and contemporary. She has a particular interest in women artists and was the main author and editor of the publication on Sarah Cecilia Harrison (1863-1941), Artist, Social Campaigner and City Councillor (Four Courts Press, 2022). She has recently been working on the development of a project to establish a proposed Harry Clarke Museum of Irish Stained Glass in Dublin.

Join the Grolier Club for a conversation with David M. If you wish to register instead for the live webcast, please visit this page. In many ways, books made Abraham Lincoln. He became a lawyer through self-disciplined study, won the White House through the concurrent rise of American popular publishing, and remains one of the most written about figures over the 160 years since his death. Abraham Lincoln: His Life in Print uses original printings of books and ephemera to create a sweeping, conceptual portrait of the man. The exhibition features important editions of Lincoln’s greatest accomplishments, including the Emancipation Proclamation, the Gettysburg Address, the Cooper Union Speech, his debates with Stephen A. Douglass, and many others. More than 150 objects describe the life of Lincoln as he was born in the American West, captivated by literature, shaped by the portentous 1850s, tested by the American Civil War, responsible for the end of slavery, and murdered and mourned at the age of 56. Featuring materials from the David M. Rubenstein Americana Collection, the exhibition is curated by Mazy Boroujerdi, special advisor to the collection, and will be accompanied by a catalogue published by the Grolier Club. David M. Rubenstein is co-founder and co-chairman of the private equity firm The Carlyle Group and is the principal owner of the Baltimore Orioles baseball team. His collection has included the Bay Psalm Book (1640, the first book printed in America) and the Magna Carta (1297, one of the most important legal documents in the history of democracy). Visitors with hearing aids should turn their devices to the “T” setting in order to access the system; visitors without hearing aids may request a “loop receiver” with earphones. Environment The temperature and humidity in the exhibition hall are tightly controlled for the sake of the valuable items on display, and this may cause the room to feel chilly, particularly in warmer weather, to those coming in from outside. Members and visitors are advised to bring a light wrap when visiting an exhibition, or attending an event in the hall.

Eritaj: The Story of the Land and the Voice of the Ancestors | Gibney 280 Broadway

To be Haitian is to know that our freedom is a birthright. To be Black is to know the taste, smell, sound, and depth of this freedom, and to carry it in our blood and bones. To be Black and Haitian, today, is to reconcile this truth with the reality of loss, grief, and chaos, as well as an unwavering sense of hope and desire. Eritaj: The Story of the Land and the Voice of the Ancestors attempts to expose the nature of this duality and the process of such a reconciliation for the self, for the family, and for the community in our day-to-day lives. Eritaj: The Story of the Land and the Voice of the Ancestors uses dance and embodied storytelling to revisit and reframe common scenarios of displacement, poverty, abuse, and misery often associated with Haiti’s descent to instability and insecurity. Eritaj does this while uniquely highlighting the lived connections between Haitians and other communities of the African Diaspora

Black Friday in New York 2024 | New York
Nov 29, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
New York
Black Friday in New York is the biggest discount shopping day of the year. Shoppers can usually expect discounts of up to 80% off on items at this time! It only happens once a year, at the end of November. In 2024, Black Friday will be on November 29.
Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving. For many people, this marks the "official" start of the holiday shopping season. Every Thanksgiving, the US retail industry does its best to lure shoppers into stores or online, hoping to make a killing by offering the best deals.
Look out for "flash sales," which are select items sold at extremely low prices when stores open or in the early hours of Black Friday. Flash sales are always worth waking up early for! Flash sales have the biggest markdowns on top brands and electronics. However, these sale items are available in limited quantities: so once they're sold out, they're gone. Plus, each person can usually only take advantage of one flash sale.

Look Again: European Paintings 1300–1800 | New York
Nov 20, 2023–Nov 30, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
New York
The reopened galleries dedicated to European Paintings from 1300 to 1800 highlight fresh narratives and dialogues among more than 700 works of art from the Museum’s world-famous holdings. The newly reconfigured galleries—which include recently acquired paintings and prestigious loans, as well as select sculptures and decorative art—will showcase the interconnectedness of cultures, materials, and moments across The Met collection.
The chronologically arranged galleries will feature longstanding strengths of the collection—such as masterpieces by Jan van Eyck, Caravaggio, and Poussin; the most extensive collection of 17th-century Dutch art in the western hemisphere; and the finest holdings of El Greco and Goya outside Spain—while also giving renewed attention to women artists, exploring Europe’s complex relationships with New Spain and the Viceroyalty of Peru, and looking more deeply into histories of class, gender, race, and religion.
The reopening of the suite of 45 galleries at the top of the Great Hall staircase follows a five-year project to replace the skylights. This monumental infrastructure project improves the quality of light and enhances the viewing experience for a new look at this renowned collection.
Major support for Look Again: European Paintings 1300–1800 is provided by Candace K. and Frederick W. Beinecke.
