Mar 22, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Los Angeles
HEALTH & SAFETY: WE ASK THAT YOU PLEASE WEAR A FACE MASK WHILE INDOORS FOR OUR EVENTS. THANK YOU. Problems problems problems. But problems can create opportunity. The extraordinary journalists Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson examine a slew of social problems in their new book, Abundance-- problems that were actually created by solutions dreamed up decades ago by sometimes well-meaning legislation. Solutions that might have seemed perfectly sensible a generation or two ago have actually been force multipliers for problems we're looking at right now. Take housing shortages. The housing crisis strangling cities across the country are the result of density zoning laws that decades ago made sense. Los Angeles, for example, enacted strict anti-density regulations, and we fought long and hard against looking like New York. The result is a staggering and catastrophic lack of housing-- affordable and not so affordable. But don't despair. Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson find hope and promise for us in Abundance, suggesting that we need to reframe our thinking, and that it's possible in a host of sectors, to protect and at the same time, to improve and expand. Ezra Klein is a columnist for the New York Times, and he hosts the terrific twice-weekly podcast, The Ezra Klein Show, which you can listen to or watch on Tuesdays and Fridays on nytimes.com. He tackles social and political issues with experts who provide clarity when and where you didn't think clarity could be found. Moderator to be announced. Ezra Klein will be the only author of Abundance at the event. Did you know that you can make a fully tax-deductible donation? Chuck Schumer is the Senate Democratic Leader and highest-elected Jewish official in American history. He has been United States senator from New York since 1999. He is the author of Positively American: Winning Back the Middle Class One Family at a Time.
When it comes to the history of the Jewish people, there is a national and global crisis of misunderstanding. This lack of knowledge feeds demons of ignorance, hatred, and violence. Antisemitism in America: A Warning is an urgent book that illuminates the Jewish experience and the prejudices both hidden and overt that have led to the chronic persecution of the Jewish people.
By placing antisemitism in its proper historical context, and drawing from Senator Schumer's own life, the book informs Americans' understanding of the causes of the recent swell of antisemitic rhetoric and violence in our country. In very personal terms, it will engage with debates over the purpose and meaning of Israel, and help draw a line between legitimate criticism of its government and when criticism of Israel as a Jewish homeland verges into antisemitism. This book is a warning, informed by the lessons of history, about what can happen when the “world's oldest hatred” is allowed to rise, unchecked.
