Alice Coltrane: Monument Eternal | Hammer Museum

Feb 9–May 4, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Los Angeles
Exhibitions
The exhibition Alice Coltrane, Monument Eternal is inspired by the life and legacy of jazz musician, devotional leader, and mother Alice Coltrane (b. 1937, Detroit). The title takes its name from her book Monument Eternal (1977), which reflected her newfound spiritual beliefs; the loss of her husband, the saxophonist John Coltrane; and the path to healing and self-discovery. The exhibition presents works by contemporary American artists paired with ephemera from Coltrane’s personal archive. Featuring a range of mediums including video, installation, performance, and sculpture together with Coltrane’s archival hand-written correspondence, unreleased audio recordings, and rarely seen video footage, Alice Coltrane, Monument Eternal explores themes including spiritual transcendence, sonic innovation, and architectural intimacy to honor Coltrane’s cultural output and practice.

Jonny Nish: Wandering | Los Angeles

Feb 15–Apr 5, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Los Angeles
Exhibitions
As his second exhibition with the gallery, Australian artist Jonny Nish continues to use materials such as MDF, voile, aluminum and stainless steel to create abstract geometric works with bright gradient colors, giving viewers full sensory stimulation. Jonny's fascination with reflective materials originated from his childhood visit to a cosmetics counter in a department store with his mother. Later, inspired by the works of Robert Irwin and the Mark Rothko retrospective at the Louis Vuitton Foundation, Jonny's paintings extend from the interior to the entire environment. He does not want his works to be just two-dimensional static images, but to have a visual dialogue with the audience through the echo of paintings, materials and exhibition space.

María Magdalena Campos-Pons: Behold | The Getty

Feb 18–May 4, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Los Angeles
Exhibitions
Cuban-born María Magdalena Campos-Pons makes vivid photographs, watercolors, installations, and performances that trace the cultural and personal impacts of migration and memory. Her works reflect global histories of labor as they affected her family through enslavement, indenture, and motherhood, emphasizing resilience and respect for her Nigerian and Chinese ancestors. This survey of 35 years of artmaking and activism highlights the interconnectedness between people and their environments, offering an expansive, incisive, and sensorial experience.

Lisa Yuskavage | Los Angeles

Feb 18–Apr 12, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Los Angeles
Exhibitions
David Zwirner is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by artist Lisa Yuskavage, on view at the gallery’s 606 N Western Avenue location in Los Angeles. This is the artist’s ninth solo exhibition with the gallery and her first in Los Angeles in thirty years. It anticipates the first comprehensive museum presentation of Yuskavage’s works on paper, featuring drawings from the early 1990s to the present, the majority of which have never been exhibited before, at The Morgan Library & Museum, New York, in June 2025.

Charles Gaines: Numbers and Trees: Baobabs of Tanzania | Hauser & Wirth

Feb 19–May 24, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
West Hollywood
Exhibitions
Charles Gaines, an 80-year-old artist and educator from Los Angeles, is widely acclaimed for his contributions to the development of conceptual art and the formation of the Los Angeles art scene. This exhibition, the artist's first solo exhibition in Los Angeles since 2019, will present a series of new acrylics and watercolors as an elaboration of his iconic series "Numbers and Trees". Trees have been central to Gaines's work since the mid-1970s. He first painted trees through a numbered grid system in the "Walnut Orchard" series. This methodological experimentation continued in the "Numbers and Trees" series, which began in 1987, hinting at the arbitrariness of other manufactured systems in our society - such as politics, gender, race and class.

Woody De Othello: Tuning the Scale | West Hollywood

Feb 19–Apr 5, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
West Hollywood
Exhibitions
American artist Woody De Othello is known for his diverse artistic practices that span sculpture, painting, and drawing. Using a variety of media including glazed ceramics, wood carvings, bronze, ink, and oil painting, he transforms everyday objects into vessels of personification and spirituality. Upon entering the exhibition hall, visitors are greeted by three bronze sculptures composed of hands, ears, feet, horns, and speaker cones. Othello advocates for the collapse of boundaries between vision, hearing, and feeling. Just as Wassily Kandinsky linked color, music, and spirituality in his abstract paintings, Othello seeks to externalize inner emotions.

Bruce Nauman: The Pasadena Years | Los Angeles

Feb 19–Apr 26, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Los Angeles
Exhibitions
Bruce Nauman: Pasadena Years is a historical reflection on the prolific decade that established one of the most important contemporary artists of our time. The exhibition emphasizes the radical foundation of Nauman’s practice while he lived in Los Angeles between 1969-1979. Across the entire gallery and garden, works on view will include sculptures, installations, sound works, videos, works on paper, and editions. Pasadena Years notably marks Nauman’s first exhibition in Los Angeles in over 30 years and will include a text for a room that the artist is recreating for the first time since its debut at the earliest retrospective of his work, which originated at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 1972.

Derriann Pharr: I Am a Bloodstone | Los Angeles

Mar 1–Apr 5, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Los Angeles
Exhibitions
Luis De Jesus Los Angeles presents Derriann Pharr’s solo project I Am a Bloodstone, marking the Birmingham artist’s first institutional exhibition in Los Angeles. Pharr’s mixed media practice seeks to deconstruct the social discipline of the objectified gaze on the body through the combined use of abstract painting, drawing and poetic language, especially the “systematic neglect of the flesh and subjectivity of marginalized groups” in the context of the American South. The artist uses her own identity experience as a black and white mixed-race woman as a starting point to critically reconstruct the established paradigms of aesthetics, identity and body politics.

MOAH’s sensory-friendly programming boasts an array of resources and services for neurodivergent guests before and during the museum experience. Beginning with the social narrative, which is available on MOAH’s website, guests can read a first-person description of a trip to MOAH, with important details regarding parking, entrance/exit points, restrooms, and how to access on-site sensory-friendly resources. Guests can attend special open hours, which occur before the museum opens to the public. During these special open hours, the lighting in the museum is dimmed and the audio components of artworks are lowered. Upon arrival at the museum, guests are offered a sensory-friendly programming map, which pin-points changes in light and noise, along with the exact locations of hands-on sensory-friendly programming activities. Guests with hyper/hypo-sensitivities also have access to a take-a-break space on the bottom level of the museum. This room is sectioned off from main walkways and contains calming tools and water within a quiet, dimly lit space. Speech cards, in both Spanish and English, are available at the guest services desk to assist non-verbal visitors. Optional sensory-friendly programming activities include the multi-sensory tour and a hands-on art activity. The multi-sensory tour is a self-guided tour with stations throughout the museum. Each station focuses on a single work of art and includes an object or objects that can be used to enhance the viewer’s sensory experience of the artwork. Tour “stations” allow guests to engage with staff members and multi-sensory items on a volunteer basis. The voluntary, hands-on art activity, offered in the MOAH classroom, is designed to adapt to hyper- and hypo-sensitivities, as well as multiple age groups and abilities. In many cases, the finished art project doubles as a fidget or calming tool that can be used while exploring the museum. Information Source: Lancaster Museum of Art and History | eventbrite
