Traditional Petrykivka artworks by Halych-born and Santa Monica–based artist Marina Malyarenko will be on display. Dovzhyk and Starovoyt—members of PEN Ukraine—will read from their works. Femicide: Death, Gender, and the Border | The Fowler Museum at UCLA

Mar 5, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED

Arts
Fine Art
This panel, moderated by Professor Alicia Gaspar de Alba, honors Women’s History Month and remembers the femicides in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. Panelists, including Professor Hannah Gary and artists Judithe Hernandez and Alma Lopez, will discuss art's role in activism against gendered violence. Faculty from law, social sciences, and humanities will respond. This panel, moderated by and held in conjunction with Professor Alicia Gaspar de Alba’s UCLA research seminar of the same name, revisits the over 30-year crime wave of femicides/feminicidios—the kidnappings, serial sex crimes, and horrific murders of poor young Mexican, Central American, and indigenous women and girls—in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, across the border from the professor’s hometown of El Paso, Texas. Looking at the representations of these femicides in art and literature, the panelists, including UCLA’s Professor of Law Hannah Gary and artists Judithe Herandez and Alma Lopez, will discuss the uses of art as activism to raise consciousness about this continuing lethal gendered violence that has already claimed the lives of thousands of innocent women and girls on the U.S.–Mexico border. Invited UCLA faculty in law, social sciences, and the humanities will serve as respondents in this two-part discussion. This program is co-sponsored by the César E. Chávez Department of Chicana/o Studies and The Promise Institute for Human Rights Originally from the El Paso–Juárez border, Alicia Gaspar de Alba is a founding faculty member and professor in the César E. Chávez Department of Chicana/o and Central American Studies. She has published 13 books, among them award-winning novels, collections of short fiction and poetry, and academic texts. She started researching the Juarez femicides in 1998 and in 2003, hosted a two-day international conference on the subject at UCLA. For more about her work see https://aliciagaspardealba.net. See also desertblood.net. Professor Hannah R. Garry is executive director of The Promise Institute for Human Rights at UCLA Law. Sheis a scholar and practitioner of international criminal law, transitional justice, and refugee law, with over 15 years of teaching at CU, USC, and UCLA Law. A former U.S. Fulbright Scholar, she has served as a research consultant with Oxford and received USC’s Mellon Award for Faculty Mentoring. With nearly 20 years of experience as a senior legal adviser, she has worked on genocide and crimes against humanity cases before international tribunals, including the ICC and U.S. Supreme Court. Recently, she testified before the ICC, UN Human Rights Committee, and UK Parliament. She serves on advisory boards for the USC Shoah Foundation, Clooney Foundation, and Human Rights Watch, and is a member of ASIL’s Executive Council. Judithe Hernández, a trailblazing Chicana artist, rose to prominence in the 1970s as a member of Los Four, the influential Chicano art collective central to the Chicano Art Movement. After graduating from Otis Art Institute, she became known for her murals advocating social justice, including collaborations with César E. Chávez and the United Farm Workers, as well as community projects in East Los Angeles. Influenced by her mentor Charles White, Hernández embraced social realism and developed a deep commitment to drawing. Over her five decades-long career, her work has been widely exhibited and acquired by institutions such as MoMA and LACMA. In 2024, her artistic contributions were honored with a major retrospective at the Cheech Marin Center, solidifying her legacy as a pivotal figure in Chicano art and beyond. Alma López, dubbed the “Digital Diva” by UCLA’s La Gente Newsmagazine in 1999, is a visual and public artist known for her innovative digital photo-based series, Lupe and Sirena. This work reimagines colonial Mexican icons through a radical Chicana feminist lesbian lens, addressing themes of identity, gender, and activism. Her renowned piece, Our Lady, sparked national debate and became the centerpiece of the book Our Lady of Controversy: Alma López’s “Irreverent Apparition”, which she co-edited with her spouse, Professor Alicia Gaspar de Alba. López’s work has been featured in over 100 exhibitions across the United States, Mexico, and Europe. A visiting lecturer at UCLA, she teaches courses on Chicana/Latina and queer art, while continuing to advocate for LGBTQ and feminist causes through her art and activism. Ione Skye made her film debut opposite Keanu Reeves in River’s Edge, followed by her iconic role as Diane Court in Say Anything. Skye has appeared in other notable film and television projects including Zodiac, Wayne’s World, Fever Pitch, Arrested Development, Camping, Good Girls, Beef, and much more. In addition to acting, Skye is a painter who has exhibited and sold her work for twenty-five years. She is the author of the children’s book, My Yiddish Vacation, and cohost of the weekly podcast Weirder Together. Ione is the mother of two daughters and lives in Los Angeles with her husband, and collaborator, the musician Ben Lee. “Ione Skye captivated an entire generation when she emerged as a new kind of ingenue — idiosyncratic, almost vulpine, she made the films she appeared in her own and became a fascinating fixture of LA lore. But this book proves that even though she was on everyone’s screen (and bedroom wall) she had more to say than anyone else’s work could contain. That the most fascinating, funny, and ferocious version of events is her own.” –Lena Dunham, actor, filmmaker, creator of HBO’s Girls, and bestselling author of Not That Kind of Girl In 1987, sixteen-year-old Ione Skye landed the breakout role of Diane Court, the dream girl who inspires John Cusack’s iconic boombox serenade in the hit Cameron Crowe film, Say Anything. While Skye seemed perfectly typecast as an aloof valedictorian, she was anything but. Deserted by her dad, the folk singer legend Donovan, Skye was a ninth-grade dropout who sought solace and validation in the eyes of audiences and dreamy costars like Keanu Reeves, River Phoenix, Matthew Perry, John Cusack, and Robert Downey Jr. But like her sixties It Girl mom, Skye’s greatest weakness was musicians. On the heels of a toxic relationship with the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Anthony Kiedis, which began when she was just sixteen and he was twenty-four, the actress leapt into wedded bliss with her first great love, Beastie Boy Adam Horovitz. But marriage was not the magical hall pass to adulthood Skye had imagined. Awakening to her bisexuality and desperately insecure, she risked her fairytale marriage for a string of affairs with gorgeous nineties “bad girls.” The dream marriage imploded, and Skye’s trust in herself and her future along with it. Set against a backdrop of rock royalty compounds, supermodel cliques, and classic late-century films like River’s Edge, Gas Food Lodging, and Wayne’s World, Say Everything is a wild ride of Hollywood thrills as well as a lyrical reflection on ambition, intimacy, and a messy, sexy, unconventional life. L.A. Book Launch: S is For by William Archila | Beyond Baroque Literary Arts Center

Mar 8, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Venice

Literary Arts
Celebrate the launch of S is For, the newest poetry collection by poet, William Archila. S is For is an investigation of the Central American migrant crisis haunted by the past of the civil war in El Salvador, the meanings of family spirits, and trees disappearing to urban sprawl—always wielding the voice of the immigrant, the refugee, and the ever-present exile as a weapon against invisibility and displacement. The author is joined by other notable writers of the SoCal region, including Doug Manuel, Arthur Kayzakian, and Cynthia Guardado. Praise for S is For S is for: every letter never uttered, but evoked. Searing—not merely how I’d describe William Archila’s gaze at the desperation and depredation attendant in power’s abuse, the violence dogging the migrant, the slayings of those who stay. No, also, searing in the sense of that which burns a mark into a surface, how the poet’s prosody scorches language into the line, into the throat, into the air. Heat, here, that makes light, signal visible even from exile, even to a distracted North who may not/may only notice that “Yesterday a cutthroat carved a copper/who carved a cutthroat, 224 wounds/for the smallest of spoils.” Archila tallies these wounds and those that set fire to the heart. Here, S is for searing, for song, for sorrow. S is for sunlit, for shot, for shattered. S is for sublime. Stunning. Staggering. —Douglas Kearney Doors Open: 6:30 PM I Readings: 7:00 PM About the authorsWilliam Archila is the winner of the 2023 Philip Levine Prize for Poetry for his collection S is For. Launching Women's Iconography in the 21st Century: A Digital Archive | Lancaster University Library

Mar 10, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Lancaster
Arts
Fine Art
You are cordially invited to the launch of Women’s Iconography in the 21st Century (insert link to archive) —a new archive for Lancaster University’s Digital Collections Platform. This archive is part of the AHRC-funded Impact Acceleration Project, Contemporary Women Icons, led by Dr Azelina Flint (Associate Researcher) and Dr Brian Baker (Senior Lecturer), of ELCW. This project raises awareness of women’s understudied accomplishments in Orthodox iconography: a practice of Christian sacred art that was historically male dominated. Known as ‘windows to eternity’, icons allow viewers to meet holy figures who gaze out at them from an invisible world. As the first documentary project of women’s iconography, Contemporary Women Icons explores how women from a range of denominational, cultural and ethnic backgrounds make a space for themselves in this ancient tradition. Our archive is the first of its kind and digitally preserves the work of women from across the world, including Armenia, Brazil, Canada, Latvia, Lebanon, Greece, Finland, Mexico, Russia, the USA and the Ukraine, as well as the UK. It features both traditional iconography and iconography-inspired sacred art that modernises the tradition through using present-day techniques and depicting figures outside the traditional canon of sainthood. The launch will include talks from a range of artists on the platform and lectures from the project’s Co-Is. Registration is free with refreshments, snacks and possible musical entertainment included! The event is hybrid. To attend online, register at this link: Launching Women’s Iconography in the Twenty-First Century: A Digital Archive - Events - Lancaster University To attend in person, register with EventBrite.
