Book Talk with Laureen Hom: The Power of Chinatown | Chinese Historical Society of America
Jul 26, 2025 (UTC-7)
San Francisco
JOIN CHSA for an in-depth presentation with author and scholar Laureen Hom about her book,
The Power of Chinatown: Searching for Spatial Justice in Los Angeles
.
BACKGROUND
The Power of Chinatown
is the culmination of my research on Los Angeles Chinatown that examines community politics and gentrification since the 1970s. The book includes over four years of intensive fieldwork in the 2010s, including interviews with community leaders and activists across generations, participant-observations in the neighborhood, and archival research spanning 80 years of Chinatown's history.
Los Angeles Chinatown continues to be an important site for community and political belonging for Chinese and Asian Americans across the region. Yet, Chinatown is more than just a symbolic and historic neighborhood. The threats of gentrification and forced displacement are also (re)structuring the material and social conditions of the neighborhood. As Chinatown continues to be a dynamic neighborhood that is a home for generations of working-class immigrants, the political engagement and activism of Chinese and Asian Americans who converge in Chinatown raise important questions as to how they not only raise the political visibility of Chinese and Asian Americans, but also specifically respond to the material conditions of the neighborhood to support the most economically and socially vulnerable within the community.
ADMISSION
$5 general admission
$28 includes admission and a copy of her book
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Laureen Hom is an interdisciplinary scholar and educator at the intersection of urban studies, ethnic studies, public administration, and public policy. My research examines spatial politics, racialization, gentrification, (im)mobilities, and community formations in urban neighborhoods, with a particular emphasis in Asian Americans and immigrant communities in California.
Currently, she is Associate Professor in the Department of Urban & Regional Planning at San José State University and is a member of the
Los Angeles Chinatown Community Land Trust
and have served as a board member for the
Chinese Historical Society of Southern California
and Chinese American Citizens Alliance-Los Angeles Lodge. She leverages practical experiences and civic engagement as well as her heritage as a Chinese American woman with immigration roots back to the early 20th century to shape her identity as a scholar, educator, and researcher.

Jul 26, 2025 (UTC-7)
San Francisco
Dore Alley 2025 is about to make waves in San Francisco as BRÜT crashes into the city with Renegade, a night that embodies the raw, untamed leather biker fantasy. The air sizzles with heat as chrome gleams and leather’s sharp tang fuels desire. Men move like unyielding machines, driven by rebellion and freedom.

The Beats That Drive the Dore Alley Night:
On the decks is a full NYC takeover—DJs Morabito, James Anthony, and Dan Darlington—combine forces to crank the heat to dangerous levels. Their raw, filthy beats grip you hard, each electrifying rhythm pulsing through the crowd like a roaring engine. Their music roars through the crowd like a turbocharged engine, fueling an unstoppable surge of horsepower.

Summer Fruit Tree Pruning | Garden for the Environment
Jul 26, 2025 (UTC-7)
San Francisco
Fruit trees require year-round care, and summer pruning is critical to their health. Summer pruning allows air and light to reach fruits and lower branches, controls growth on vigorous trees, helps direct a tree's shape, and is an opportunity to remove dead, damaged, and dying wood. Our expert instructors will teach general pruning techniques, discuss the differences between summer and winter pruning, and lead a hands-on demonstration so you can learn which cuts will keep your trees healthy and productive.
Following the workshop, you can put your newfound skills to use! Feel free to bring a lunch and eat with GFE staff and volunteers, and then at 1pm, join a group of fellow workshop participants and others from the GFE community to prune our orchard trees.
Instructor Shilpa Thanawala
is a San Carlos-based UC Master Gardener and experienced garden educator. She runs a leadership coaching practice and also serves as a grants manager for Planet Bee Foundation. Her small home garden contains more than 30 varieties of fruit trees, canes, and shrubs, a large herb garden, and a growing number of California native and pollinator plants. She has previously taught pruning to GFE's Get Up! groups as well as to the public, and has co-taught GFE fruit tree pruning workshops.
COVID-19 information:
GFE Mask Guidelines:
Please bring a mask to accommodate your comfort level in an outdoor group situation.
Please bring gardening gloves for possible hands-on activities.
Please cancel your shift and do not come to GFE if you develop COVID19 symptoms on or before the day of your workshop.
